Take Five (Paul Desmond): CrescenDuo flute & guitar duo ft. flutist Stephanie Pack

This jazz standard was composed by Paul Desmond, first recorded in 1959 by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Brubeck was inspired to create an album based on odd time signatures during his state sponsored 1958 Eurasia trip. The track was written after the Quartet's drummer, Joe Morello, requested a song in quintuple (5/4) meter. Desmond composed the melodies on Morello's rhythms while Brubeck arranged the song. The track's name is derived from its meter.

Thanks, Roque! Yes, I was surprised to discover it was written by the quartet's saxophonist, Paul Desmond, based on drummer Joe Morello's requested rhythm, and then arranged by Brubeck.

I’ve always loved this tune. When I first heard the Brubeck version in a film decades ago (obviously,pre internet) it took me weeks to find out what it was called so I could buy it. Very frustrating!!

Thanks so much, Dave! Yes, I think I recall it being featured in a film years ago. I always thought of this coupled with "Unsquare Dance" which is in 7/4 time, but "Take Five" lends itself more to the flute/guitar arrangement - it's always been a staple in the set list.
