I am so glad you found it helpful. I just posted a video yesterday showing my front two clematis, they are a Group 2 pruning variety and I shared how I have been getting the best bloom from them, here is the link: th-cam.com/video/luPqB00rQAM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=rueXa5azkUyNLQjp It starts at about the 22 minute mark.
How neat to see! I've had several Climatis's over the years, and they either didn't come back after a hard MN winter, or I didn't know how to prune them. The last ones I know now, I pruned them too far back. So now I know how far down I can go. Thank you!
Thanks for your tips I have made it simple for me any group that. Flower before June after flowering I tidy any that flowers AFTER June I cut down in February (England) to one foot from the ground wrong OR right but it works for me thanks for your time and information 🐥🐞👍👍👍
Making things easy is always a great idea. I have found that my Group 2 clematis will bloom longer for me if I don't cut them to the ground each winter. This year I only pruned the dead on them and they are going to bloom in May rather than later and they are almost to my porch eave so I am thinking I will take the time each year to prune them this way so I can enjoy them longer and taller! My Group 3 will just be cut down and I killed my Group 1 so I need to start over on those.
i just bought a group 3 clematis from the garden center.... it has already finished flowering - should i cut off the seedheads to encourage more blooms?
I’m so glad I found you! I’ve had a Warsaw Nike for a couple of years and didn’t know what to do with it since it wasn’t clear whether it was a group 2 or 3. The lower stems are wire thin and the leafing out doesn’t begin for a few feet, but that part looks healthy. Should I wait until next year to cut it back?
Do an experiment, cut back half of it and leave the other half and watch to see what it does. It will give you a feel for how it performs for you and you won't lose all those earlier blooms.
Ops. I think I have this plant. I don't have a trellis or anything for it to climb. I was about to dig it out this year. I finally put some sticks for it to climb. I usually prune it early winter. Now I learn not to prune until next year and get a trellis for it to climb. 🤦♀️. Thank you for the information.
I planted 2 group 3 clematis last spring but didn't prune them in Feb/March zone 7B. They are not starting to sprout new leaves now. Is it too late to prune them now? I was thinking I had to leave them alone at least for 2 growing seasons because they were so small when I planted them. Now I am not so sure?
Yes it is fine, go ahead and prune away. I just did mine last week and I have another I can just now get to as the snow has melted and I will prune that one either today or this weekend sometime.
I think I have a group 3. However it only blooms at the top with no flower buds in the first 5 feet or so above ground. How can I correct this? It was pruned to the ground so all stems are new growth from this year. Thanks!
I have an Alba Luxuriance which apparently is Group 3. I just watched your Video and when I went out to prune mine it only has one main stalk but I can see 2or 3 buds coming from the base. I have had this plant for about 3 years and it doesn't really do well. It has sun and I do mulch well, so I don't know why I don't have lots of shoots like yours. Do I need to fertilize and if so how often?
It takes a good 3 years for them to get growing well so you are probably right on track! Clematis don't really need a lot of fertilizer so really I think you just need to give it time. Mine were spindly the first few years also this one you see is 12 plus years old.
Thank you for this video I bought one today and now I’m researching it and f found this awesome video

Try mulching deeply before winter strikes and it may help them survive better.

Yes, that is a good idea and it should rebloom.

@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse I’ll try that. Thanks!

Next year as it starts to grow train it horizontally back and forth on the support, it forces blooms at the base.
