Any Woman in my family would have told MIL to shovel it and clean her own damn room!

If you own the house, it is in your name, and is not a communal/marital property which means you saved the money before you married to buy it later, then there is no way in hell your spouse or your in-laws can kick you out of the house, instead you can call the cops on them for trespassing and get them kicked out. This is applicable in the majority of the countries around the world, except for the Islamic countries.
Also, I am very sure that these authors, don't know a crap about laws or legalities. These authors are either from the jungles or watch too many nonsense soap operas.

I was having a hard time following who was speaking. Otherwise not a bad story.

Harsh MIL? 😂 Not in my own home. Luckily my FIL and MIL were divorced and lived on their own separately. My MIL didn't want to live with any of her 2 children, my FIL, well, he gave me a headache while living with us at the beginning until I told my husband to choose between me and his father. If he choose his father, I'm leaving. He chose me, so FIL has to find an appartment and lived on his own.
