  • Did you expect this in New Zealand? When you come to New Zealand, you'll be shocked to see gangs. Gangs in New Zealand are so unafraid of the Police that they ride obnoxiously loud motorcycles so you can hear them a mile away.
They even wear a uniform which includes a gang patch, so you know which gang they're from.
This is how open and obvious organised crime is in New Zealand. And for visitors like my wife, it's shocking.
If you stay away from them, they won't bug ya. But the reality is gangs are known for the drug trade, murder, theft, violence against women, and the list goes on.
"There are numerous gangs in New Zealand, of varying criminality, organisation and ethnicity, including outlaw motorcycle gangs, street gangs and ethnically based gangs. A chapter of the Hells Angels motorcycle club was formed in Auckland in 1961, the first Hells Angels chapter outside the US.
Soon after, the Mongrel Mob formed in Hastings and Wellington, developing into a predominantly Māori and Pacific Islander gang and having the largest membership in the country.
Through the 1960s and 1970s, other outlaw motorcycle clubs and ethnically based gangs formed, including another predominantly Māori gang, Black Power (not related to the African-American movement), which grew to rival the Mongrel Mob." from Wikipedia.

    Hi, New Zealander here,
The gangs are pretty chill most of the time. As long as you don't bother them, and treat members like regular people, you're fine.
NZ gangs are not like the ones in the US, and violence is usually between other gangs.
Also, it depends on the area you're in. I know that Hamilton and parts of Auckland have more gang activity. My dad runs a mechanic shop and has interacted with multiple gang members, and once, a car he fixed up for them got seized by the police a week later.
Edit: This is just my point of view. Please stop acting out the NZ Parliment's current debates in the replies

    Thing is yeah, anywhere you have a non-native colonial power exploiting and “governing” the land and native peoples of that land;
You will have this - Groups of individuals who aren’t allowed to participate fairly in said artificially constructed society.
These are the descendants (mostly) of native people who have been forced to make it out of poverty one way or another because they aren’t wanted in the white man’s hierarchical-societal monopolies.

New Zealander here: The gangs are kind of a problem here, but yeah, if you don't bother them they won't bother you. I see people in the comments from countries with worse organized crime kind of laughing at this, and I understand why because gangs here aren't nearly as bad as gangs in other countries. I live pretty close to a gang but it really isn't a huge deal. Sure they extort people but at least they have some kind of moral code, it's honestly better than insurance here in America lol Insurance here will take thousands upon thousands of dollars from you every month and only cover part of damages and only after you spend a certain amount of money, they don't care in the slightest. Kinda sad when the Yakuza is more caring than US insurance companies. Both extort your money, but only one actually seems to care.

As someone who has grown up and still lives in NZ, most gangs over here are actually pretty chill, at least in public, they can be annoying at times, if ya don't like loud noise, but a lot of them are actually quite friendly people. We've even got some that make lunches for schools and keep drugs out of certain communities. Most of them are related also, as the locals have very big families, so sometimes it's just a ton of uncles and cousins and such.
Not as bad as gangs around most of the world, and are pretty friendly, but there are the exceptions to that rule, but most gangs won't bother anyone except rival gangs.

Agreed. And they have this in a lot of places, east coast, LA, Texas…not unique to NZ and nothing to be afraid of. While it is loud and they are sometimes in the way I like seeing that so many people are enjoying time and traveling together and they are usually focused on safely getting all their members from one location to another.

I was a typical 18 year old German backpacker in the Northland when we ran out of gas and the only gas station (self-Service) for miles wouldn’t accept any of our cards. The only person there was a member of a motorbike gang. He was happy to help us out. We gave him cash, he put in his card so we can fuel. We gave him some beers and he was happy, super friendly guy despite the scary appearance with all the face tattoos

Most gangs won’t bother you in NZ. There’s been a wave of youth crime but that probably happens everywhere. The patched ones are usually cool it’s the prospects of them you gotta look out for. Young ones looking to prove themselves, usually doing bum jobs for the gangs to earn a patch. Unless you’re lucky enough to inherit a patch, you’ve gotta earn it by doing bum jobs(bein a bitch), doing time (taking the wrap) or getting a hiding (beat down).
Like the mafia, being in the gangs usually means your whole family is involved too. It’s possible for someone born into the gang to go a different path but as I’m sure you know, being a product of your environment is easier than forging a new path.
