Autofocus is great it is fast and sharp and the camera make most of the decisions for you. But if you want to take away these decisions from the camera and give yourself more creative control then manual focus will be important to you.
How to Manually Focus your Camera
Traditionally a light meter was used to calculate focus
Modern cameras have a light meter built into the camera
This can be viewed on the LCD on the top and the screen at the back of the camera. This will tell you if your settings are correct and will leave you free to decide the aperture, shutter speed and ISO you want and the look of your final photo
You may want to select a slower shutter speed and ISO for your aperture or you want a shallower depth of field with a slow shutter speed. You may even want to deliberately over or underexpose a shot to create an effect.
Manual focus will get you thinking more about the camera settings.
Achieving focus from F8 to F22 is quite easy. But on shallow depths of field F4 to F1.4 the use of focusing aids becomes very important. DSLR's are designed primarily for auto focus and what you see in the view finder is not what get, so you will have to use the focusing aids and check that they are calibrated correctly to achieve focus.
Manually focusing your camera with a mirrorless system is much easier, the view finder being electronic means that what you see in the viewfinder is exactly what you get
Once your manual focus assist indicated that you have focus take your shot.
The LED panel on the back of the camera works great for video because what you see is what you get and there is a histogram and other focusing aids.
When you know the basics it comes down to practice, you only become better at making focusing decision by doing so regularly and remember manual focus is important for Macro Photography, DSLR video, Time lapse, Tilt shift. It is also important if you want to stand out.
