    I'm 62 and have a medical condition that gets worse with time. Being an avid DIY'er for 40+ years and a qualified Mechanical Engineer I have lots of tools ( my wife swears I have every tool known to man, I say "Not Quite". Having several axes and heads, sledge and club hammers as well as a plethora of saws, mallets, et al. I am so pleased my 18 year old son has begun to re-handle and care for some of my tools. We are moving to Wales soon and will have a forge and work shop outside so my tools can be hung and cared for. Thanks to you and other on-line professional craftsmen and myself he has learnt how to care for tools in the proper manner, thank you for sharing your techniques and skill.

    I just took off an old head from a very old Kelly today. it's a double blade axe. I've been watching your vids to learn to restore it. 30 minutes away from me there is a family owned hickory handle company that's been in business since the early 1800s. The owner has told me they will provide the handle. I plan on getting it all on video. Thanks for the inspiration, Cody.

    So glad you did another ax video. I've been following you for a while, and when I get the chance I head out to flea markets and yard sales looking for old ax heads to restore. So far, I have only done one. And that one came from my father-in-law that recently passed away. I was helping him split some firewood when the ax handle broke. I searched the local big box stores for a handle that would measure up to your standards. I eventually found one at a mom and pop hardware store that was a beautiful white color and the grain was almost perfect. I took it home and started scrapping the lacquer off, hand sanding and coated with linseed oil. You are so right that doing that gives it the best feel. Two days after I finished the ax, my father in law passed, so I engraved his name into the head and it now hangs over the door of my garage. This project kept me calm during a hard time. I am now hooked on restoring old quality tools. I just wanted to share how much I enjoy your videos, and how your love of the homestead life has infected me. And I have been searching your videos for a few days trying to find one of the endings that end on Mt. Fuji yo share with my friends. Thanks for finishing this video with the gorgeous shot of the mountain.

    To all you dads out there. Please spend time with your kids, pass on knowledge and wisdom. You may have no idea how much of an impact it makes in their lives but it definitely will. There's a generation of young people out there that haven't had a strong father figure in their life and they're looking for it in the wrong places. If you don't teach them, someone else will. Cody, I'm sure someone has already commented on this, but you should never use a blacksmith hammer to strike other tools. They should only be used to strike hot metal. Otherwise, you will mar the hammer face and transfer that mark to your hot work finish.

    Last Sunday it was raining really hard so it was a day in the work shop for me to restore some long overdue worthy projects. First was to restore a Fireman's rescue axe by PLUMB, then a US forest service single bit axle and lastly on old standby Polaski Fire line axe. Really enjoyed the day on the bench grinder and wire wheel work all done up. Fitting the new handles and placed the proper step wedge to lock it all in.. I wanted to paint the heads of the fire rescue tools but I was all out of red paint.

    So I saw this video as my first video a long time ago, and it made me subscribe. About 6 months ago I found a "true temper flint endge jelly work" axe head that was rusted beyond belief with no handle. I finally hung it and got it to a state where it is functional. And it was awesome to get that project idea I'd love to share the photo progress but thank you for giving me information on what I needed to restore it! So thank you for helping me find a new hobby or restoring a lot of my late grandfathers old tools my father is in possession of!

    Hi Wranglerstar, I've found that an even better way to remove varnish from tool handles is a concave scraper. You won't get the flats to sand out that you get with the spokeshave and you don't have to worry about grain direction.

    • @jesseamckee
      @jesseamckee 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thelbert Sexton Agreed. The card scraper is exactly what I use to simply remove the varnish on my handles without altering the shape. Sure, if you want to alter the shape, spoke shave is the way to go.

    Great job on the video Cody! To those complaining about not explaining every reason and detail, remember he has only so much time and has to walk a tightrope between giving too much explanation and loosing the interest of the more experienced, and too little info and loosing the novices. It has got to be impossible to make a video that meets all experience levels.

    This Sir is my first time watching any of your videos and finding your channel. May I say that just for this one video, I am hooked! And I might even rate your channel as my favourite, maybe not of all time yet! But certainly my favourite of the month and a brilliant start to my year using TH-cam!! See Sir I live in England, so what sold me 100% and lead me to type out and declare my favouritism for your channel is the view of the pink sunset over that gorgeous snow covered landscape! But I was so glad to see, and perhaps even envious of the fact you are sharing and handing down your skills, knowlede and tools to your son. Which has also made me warm hearted that he is eager and receptive to learning the skills, but also he has the desire to learn about the history of the tools and their journey through your family. Where as unlike most modern day kids who even if they want to learn (Which I am sure you'll agree is a rare in itself!), they would want to use power tools to make it easier, faster and less physical work!!! So seeing your son so keen is extremely refreshing and is a credit too you as a father!
    I am so happy to have found your channel because of its content, its a pleasure to watch and will make a huge difference to my daily life, which sounds like a very pathetic thing to say. But I say it because I am disabled by a nerve disease which means for no actually reason my nerves send signals to my brain saying I am in the worse pain imaginable. So as you can imagine it affects my mobility and my ability to work and even socialise! So during most days and plenty nights I am stuck bored and alone for long periods, so in a way to combat my boredom I try find videos or channels that will help me pass the time! So thank you for giving me a whole new avenue in which to learn and enjoy! Never underestimate your contribution to making others lives better and worth keeping on going, giving others a reason to live. I wont be the only one you're helping.
    Thank you
    Marc Thomas

    A Bench-Top Oscillating Spindle Sander with the largest drum sleeve also works great. As Cody has said, take it slow. Sand a little; try it again. Make pencil marks on the high spots; try it again. Repeat until close to the shoulder; repeat lightly at the shoulder start. Also, shave a slight taper on the wood wedge edges so that it compresses slightly there. Thanks Cody!

    I always used the whole axe and pounded the end of the handle on to a piece of wood set on the floor. It drives the head down more evenly. I also like to put a little tung or linseed oil on the part of the handle that goes into the head after fitting and after trimming it, before driving the wedges in. Not only does it lubricate but it penetrates the wood over time and reduces shrinkage in dry climates.

    That hole in the top of the handle is from being chucked in a lathe for the initial turning of the handle from square stock. There should be one on the other end as well. I found this same "Plumb" axe with a loose head at an estate sale last year and restored it. Nice job!

    I've watched several of your videos; I should probably post on a newer one, but I just wanted to say this now.
    You're incredibly proficient with the tools and quite entertaining to watch. Every video I've seen exudes passion over the topics given, and there's just something about watching someone do what they love that makes me enjoy the series.
    Your son's lucky to be coming from such a good home. I hope you keep this series up with as much enthusiasm as I've seen. Good luck with your endeavors.

    My dad just gifted his little red vise to my hubby for his B-day. Great gift! I'm glad to have him pass it along to my husband.
    Wanna hear a short childhood story? Apparently, when my sister & I were kids & the family moved, the description on the moving box was "that little red metal thing on the corner of Dad's workbench that spins around tighter & tighter. Aka "a Vise"
    (I'll add to this for perspective) Dad warned us not to play around with "that thing" cause we might get our fingers pinched in it "Don't Play With That!!
    Anyhow, i'm glad... to hear all of it :-)

    I'm in IT so i'm really not the audience for these kind of videos but watch them in awe of the sheer respect Wranglerstar has for his tools. His respect for the tools for whatever job is currently on is what keeps getting me back to these videos. The knowledge about the tools, how to maintain, fix and work with tools is really valuable.
    What I also like is that Wranglerstar just goes out and take the time to do something like this. We all should take a little bit more time in our daily life and apply this mentality especially in a modern society where we "buy a new one when something is broken" kind of times. I know this doesn't apply to everyone but here in the Netherlands i see it often.
    What i'm kinda getting to is that more people should know about the tools they use in daily life and try to make most of it.
    Anyhow, thx Wranglerstar! You make awesome videos. It must take a lot of effort to make those! I subscribed a while back already so i've already been enjoying your content for a while!

    Sweet Axe Head. The 'hole' in the end of the handle is where it was mounted in the pattern lath. Those things are mass produced using a lathe that can follow a pattern and cut non round shapes. The operator mounts the work piece, and then lets the lathe do the work. There's little artistry involved. The artistry is what you are doing. Fitting the handle so carefully to the axe head. Beautiful work. I like the four in hand for roughing, but I switch to a card scraper or even a piece of broken window glass to do the final shaping. I think a smooth surface gives better contact and more friction to keep the head on the handle. Of course, that could just be a ridiculous conceit of mine. ;-)

    When Henry Ford wanted to take America from wagons to cars, he used wood spoked wheels. The spokes of those wheels were made of Hickory, stronger than oak and more resilient. The best wooden axe handle, hammer handle, etc..... Thanks for posting Cody.

    Sure I'm not the first to point it out but the hole in the kerf end of the handle is where it was chucked on a live center on the shaper that made it. That's one reason it's so symmetrical.

    Great video. In the Netherlands old ax makers puts the ax in a bucket of water. This way the ax can set into the wood. This is also a tip for an older ax. Put it in the water when an ax is old and have dry wood. Safety first

    • @blauwekrijger
      @blauwekrijger 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Put some fat/vaseline on top the ax blade during water. And clean it afterwards.At the end you are hammering on the grip you can also place an other small plank on top of the ax grip and do the hammering less damage and better feeling. But a damaged grip tip doesn't matter because after every use you should hit with the bottom of the ax to the ground so the metal ax can take extra new grip again before you put it away. For long time storage use you vaseline again :)

    A very small hand plane (hard/sharp sliver of metal) produces a more precise surface contour to completely contact the inner wall for a stiffer durified fit by only taking exactly enough off and can shave with the head on and only backed off a few millimeters for each adjustment. Quicker too. Make a dowel the shape of the hole to drive the handle out of the head each time and use an adel clamp on the handle end (recessed 1/4")), to compress the fibers slightly to lessen the stress (mushrooming) of the build on the fibers from repeated hammering ad adjusting.
