@@Edagui97 the story and CG proformance in CS just make me feels embarrassed. why the hell Falcom put more and more and MORE gal like game play in to Trails series... it understandable for a business perspective, but as a fan from the original FCSC series will hate it. and why we need robot/Gundam in the game...completely destoried the universe of the stroy. also in CS1 last chapter, there is a continuously 3 time embarrassing "we are here for help, FORWARD!" moment, and the last boss was awaken by a stupid guy for stupid reasons (they clearly run out of reasonable reason to give you a boss fight). in CS2, the country under war, his sister was in danger, but our lovely main character is just running around for fun. I can go on and on and on, but I wont. All the good things from trails of the sky was almost gone. I like the Falcom that take their time write a good story, provide a rich, interesting world, and carefuly placed sub quest and story. Not the one that just want throw random things that popular in game industory together, then kick the product out of the door. CS1 and CS2 was actually one game, but they decide cut in half make two game. the result is CS1 is reasonable ok with a crap end, then CS2 with almost 0 useful story and tons of grabage daily quest and meaning less dialog. What? you ask CS3? lol, I give it 5/10, by the way at the end someone dead(lie) then after you beat the final boss screen just goes black, guess what? wait one more year for CS4 lol. By the way the CEO of Falcom said the future game will have normal ending and true ending, you have to do x, y, and z to know the whole story and real ending (He is really trying hard to make a gal, not a jrpg). From now on, it will be a different game. I'm done here, no more Trails.
yeah, trails is the best rpg series i've ever played. not only are the story, world, and characters amazing, it has one of the best combat systems too, as long as you play on hard mode and don't use delay exploits and op spells to take the fun and challenge out of it. i really wish they would have limited the exploits by later games, i've seen playthroughs where people exploit the game to the point where most bosses don't even get a turn, not sure how people can have any fun playing like that.
I don't remember what drew my attention to the first Trails in the Sky game years ago, but I will forever be glad it caught my eye. This series has been one hell of a ride so far, and I can't wait to hopefully get my hands on more of it in the future.
pretty sure i found trails vin the sky on a best psp rpgs video, then i played sky 1 and 2 and crossbell 1 and 2 all pretty much back to back on my phone with psp emulator. it was so awkward playing those games on my phone with a ps4 controller, but i played many hours a day in a very awkward way. now i have this mount that clips my phone to a ps4 controller, i really wish i would have had it while playing through all those games, it would have been much more comfortable.
Bravo! I'm pretty caught up on the Trails series (as much as an English-speaking fan can be) but this was still very entertaining and informative, not to mention expertly put together. Your choice of visuals was spot-on in particular, since you were able to keep the video relevant to what you were saying without showing anything spoilery--and that's pretty darn difficult considering how twist-heavy this series is.
Just learn japanese, it's a hard long progress but you won't have to wait for your favorite games to get localized anymore, it also can get you into potential translating jobs.
@@andr0zzsenpai Oh, come on. The vast majority of people are not going to take the time and effort to learn an entire language just to play certain games.

It's changed my life for the better, and your work has changed my life for the better. Whatever happens after you're gone from this world, I hope it's good to you. At peace now.
I was just listening to Retronauts explain that no one in games is replicating the template of the Avengers franchise. This may be the closest any series has come.
Falcom is the best and the Trails series is one of the best RPG franchises in gaming. The combat, story, characters, music and world building is masterclass.
yeah, i only started playing trails a couple years ago and have been hooked ever since. i played sky 1 and 2 and both crossbell games on my phone with ppsspp with a ps4 controller and loved them. then i just recently bought all 4 cold steel games on sale on the ps4 store, i just started cold steel 4 a couple days ago. the only game i missed is sky the 3rd because it's the only one without an english translation for the psp version, and from everything i've seen and heard, if you had to miss one game in the series, that's the one to miss.
@@andrewramirez9727 yeah i know, i don't have a pc though. i got a ps5 and my phone. a played sky 1 & 2 and crossbell 1 & 2 on my phone and cold steel 1-4 and reverie on my ps5. just finished reverie and it's an awesome game but i like cold steel better. cold steel has a lot more exploration, reverie is way more linear.
@@andrewramirez9727 definitely. sky 1 and 2 were my favorites, and there are subplots from sky and crossbell that get resolved in the cold steel games. many characters from the previous games pop up in cold steel and reverie, and if you haven't played the previous games you won't fully understand what they're talking about.
back in middle school my older brother literally sat me down and forced me to play trails in the sky FC, now I'm doing the exact same thing to my college roommate lol
I’m so glad I randomly came across this game on Steam a little over the year ago. I whipped through trails in the Sky pretty quickly and I finally got the first game of cold steel recently. I love these games, they definitely don’t get enough recognition
Always happy to see videos like this. The LoH series is, by far, the deepest and most richly fulfilling JRPG saga ever conceived, and I haven't even gotten to play them all. I'm planning to make 2019 the LoH year and play through them all in order. I REALLY want to play the Crossbell duology, though. Wonder how long that project is going to take.
did you ever play nayuta? it's made by falcom and very similar to ys, but better imo. i played it on my phone with an emulator and ps4 controller and it played perfectly and had a very good fan translation. i never played through a whole ys game yet, but i played a little bit of them here and there, and they never pulled me in the way nayuta did. i did recently buy ys 8, 9, and origins on sale, and will get to them after i finish cold steel 4 and mass effect legendary edition. anyhow if you like ys you really need to try out nayuta if you haven't yet, it's amazing.
I'm still playing through Trails in the Sky SC but man, the developers have built the world very well. I love the series a lot and I wish it received more attention in the west
The worst part when you finish Trails in the sky trilogy and Trails of cold steel I & II is you still need to wait for cold steel III and IV end of saga English announcement :(
@@hakoniwa9384 An even worse part might be that, from what I hear, ToCS 3 and 4 are, if not incomprehensible, sorely lacking without familiarly with the Crossbell arc, and that's not easily playable in English. I've heard the fan translations are serviceable, but it's hard to feel too good about that given the quality of the formal releases in the Trails series. I'm honestly at a loss. I really want to finish Cold Steel (1 and 2 were fantastic), but is it worth doing so without Crossbell? On the flip side, I've often heard the Trails games / arcs can be played in any order; the pattern of revelations just end up being different. Perhaps it's fine? I guess I won't know for anything decade, ha.
@@RyanBancroft well azure has a finished and polished up fan translation which is really good and its names are in line with the official english names of people and everything. 10/10 for that one. zero on the other hand - rn there was a leaked, unpolished version of zero floating around. that version is playable but the quality is not good. however, the team of geofront esterior (which he mentioned) is very close to finishing their fan translation. they are on the final stuff and hope to be able to publish by summer. so for zero you have the option and swallow the pill of bad fan translation or wait for them to finish, while you can immidiately follow with azure.

The best way to support this series and bring it centerstage from how niche this title is is to post videos and share singing the praises of this game.
I finished Trails of Cold Steel 1 earlier this year and currently working on Cold Steel 2 as part of my expanding RPG backlog, and I am impressed with the presentation and gameplay from both these titles. After watching this video, I would like to explore Trails in the Sky and possibly others in the Trails series in the future.
I remember when I came across this work of art in a blind way, from the moment I played Trails in the Sky FC, it became my favorite videogame saga. Excellent video!
Seriously...seeing this video did the following things: 1) interrupt my backlog 2) table getting DQ XI and hold off getting FE TH as well 3) subbed to your channel. This is a criminally underrated series. If I were a game developer and created a world and arc, I don't think I could do better than what Legend of Heroes has done to this point.
Thank you so much, I tried to convince some of my friends to start with the trails series for weeks now, and this video is really helpful in explaining "why" I want them to experience this series.
Great quality video! For a channel so small you made such a perfectly edited video and explained the series so well. Seriously good job. Please keep it up, I'd love to see this series expand and become even more popular, especially because of how perfect it is.

Just got into the seires (near the end of Sky SC) and its crazy to see what the state of localization used to be just 4 years ago. Currently we have 3 complete stroy arcs instead of the 1.5 arcs localized when this vid released. Glad to see that publishers are giving this series a chance, it's a real gem
Trails in the Sky was how I came to know of Falcom and their beautiful masterpieces. It bewildered me how their titles aren't more well known. Thank you for making this video!

The ONLY other series I can think of with such a tightly woven narrative where each game is a MUST PLAY to fully understand the world and its characters is Kingdom Hearts, and dare I say, even its narrative isn’t so rich with secrets and events we know next to nothing about like Kiseki is.

So for the benefit of any new fans who come across this video, here’s a few updates since the video came out. Trails of Cold Steel 3 has since been localized and is available on PC and PS4 with a Switch port sometime in summer. Localization on Trails of Cold Steel 4 has yet been announced, but you can find fan translations if you really want to. The next game in the series, Hajimari no Kiseki, is set to release in Japan later in 2020. The game is split into three perspectives, one in Erebonia, one in Crossbell, and one following a certain group(the name’s kinda a spoiler). So no Calvard yet, but this is really exciting. Hope this helps out anyone.
An update to this post. So Trails of Cold Steel 4’s western release was announced on April 1st and is set to release this fall for PS4 and 2021 for PC and Switch.
I have yet to play any of the Trails series, or really any of Falcoms BIG games outside of Ys 8, which i just recently got for Switch. Looked at more of what they produced, looked a bit into the Ys franchise and their other franchises now and man did i miss some amazing stuff from the looks of it. Cant wait to take a look to the past and try to catch up with what so many people already consider to be one of the best gamedevelopers of all time!
Damn, this is so goddamn informative. Really great video. The trails series is easily the best jrpg around. Also, the localization of the sky trilogy is amazing.
Last i checked, there were no plans for a NA release for ToCS III or IV, so thank you for reigniting my hope that it may yet still come to North America ♥ Some background: I picked up Trails of Cold Steel out of spite for a friend of mine, because he said the game wouldn't be that great. I disappeared for like 4 days and had completed it and told said friend how wrong he was. Then played ToCS II and realized there were other games. Have now completed the Trails in the Sky trilogy, and tried to watch a fan translation of Azure...but wasn't playing it, and couldn't sit for the 30 minute episodes and just wanted to play it. So thank you for providing the link that allows us to track the progress of said translations!!
I have played Y’s memories of Celceta and just finished the first trails of cold steel game. I wasn’t aware of the expansive universe when I started that game. So I think I will take you up on watching your play through.
Thanks for making this video dude 😁 been obssessed with the Trails series since I was 10 😂 I'm 18 now and still can't believe how the Trails series isn't known by more people
Really well done man, i've known the dev and the series for a looong time, but haven't gotten around to really get into the Trails series because i know they deserve and demand my whole attention. I currently have Trails of Cold Steel on the way and have bought Trails in the Sky on GoG, so i think it's the time.
My first Falcom game, Ys: Memories of Celceta, was found at random. I was at a local game store and asked a worker what games he would recommend to me. He said if you like Action/Adventure or Rpg that I would like it. I almost declined though but he said, "Trust me bro! You will like it." When I got home and started playing, I was so intrigued that I started searching for more games in the series!!! And from there I went to check out some of Falcom's other titles like the The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel and will be looking forward to playing trying out Tokyo Xanadu as I am now a Falcom fan!!
I’m actually properly ashamed it took me so long to discover this series. I’m absolutely obsessed, and grateful to you and everyone else trying to make it accessible for people like me who don’t have time or money to play every available game. Doesn’t mean I’m not gonna try, though.
I'm currently playing the Trails in the Sky: SC. Looking forward to the next ones! Though I wanted to keep playing Estelle and Joshua and the rest of the team ^^; Anyway, thanks for this info~ didn't realize the history behind the legend of heroes and the future ones. I have to keep up!
As a new fan in 2020, I wanted to say two things: 1. Thank you for this wonderful video, and all of your Trails content. 2. The Geofront team released the Zero patch earlier this year, and are already 75% done with Azure! Huzzah!
Thank you very much for the video. I just got introduced to JRPG with Tokyo Xanadu Ex+ (PS4). I am almost finishing the game, so I was looking for next chapter in my jrpg journey. Your insightful video has intrigued me toward Legend of Heroes series. Falcom is really great team.
This is a great overview of the world of the Trails franchise but it feels more like a refresher for people that have already played the games instead of an introduction to the series. You go so deep into the lore of the Trails series right at the introduction and barely touch on the actual story, characters or gameplay of the series. If I had never played the series I would understand that Trails has a huge world and an ambitious scale but I wouldn't know exactly why I should get invested in the series in the first place. Anyway, don't mean to be too critical, it was a good video and I can tell you have a lot of passion for the series. As for your question at the end: I started the series with Trails in the Sky FC on the PSP in 2011 but my favorite entries might be Cold Steel I & II. I also really love Ys VIII and Nayuta no Kiseki is a lesser talked about Falcom title that I like a lot.
Well he obviously isnt going to get too specific in a video meant to get people to try the games. What would be the point of them playing them if he got that specific?
He right though, If I was a newcomer, I would be lost rather quick and lose interest. This video is probbaly meant for fans and not new players. If you wanna get new people to play this game, you have to start with the characters!
Guess what? Scott and his team of fan translators have just released an English translation for Trails from Zero! You can now play it with high-quality English translations!
I'm gonna be old when this series is finished . . . . But that won't stop me from playing through it again to get the full experience once it's complete . . . . And for those who might not know, there's also a Trails in the Sky anime (hence the thumbnail)
I already played the trails in the sky and now i am currently playing zero no kiseki, this just got me more hyped for what is to come out of this series
So hyped for CS3 localization coming this fall! Excellent primer and summary video of the whole series on your part. I've been in Kiseki gehenna for the past couple months, and just finished Sky the 3rd. Moving on to Crossbell and CS1 and 2 in preparation for CS3 later this year!
This series is the prime example that graphics doesn't define your games, but amazing gameplay, storytelling and world building is as well as love and passion the devs put into their crafts and I am really glad they are getting more popular as the series goes. I am really looking forward for what Falcom has in store for us considering how many fuck ups recent AAA companies has done, Falcom is that glitter of hope in the gaming industry we needed today, especially JRPGS.
Hmmm, I never really thought Xanadu could be pronounced as "Zan-eh-do", I always took it as "Zan-Ah-do". This was a very nice, detailed video about the Trails games, as well as a bit of Falcom's past. A mutual of mine on Twitter retweeted it, and I'm glad I checked this out!

Yup, sounds pretty apt to describe the Trails series.
its like xeno series
I tell everyone that the trails series has some of the best Character, World and Lore building ever and is a must play, I love these games to death
Your friends better appreciate it lol.
yeah, trails is the best rpg series i've ever played. not only are the story, world, and characters amazing, it has one of the best combat systems too, as long as you play on hard mode and don't use delay exploits and op spells to take the fun and challenge out of it. i really wish they would have limited the exploits by later games, i've seen playthroughs where people exploit the game to the point where most bosses don't even get a turn, not sure how people can have any fun playing like that.
RIP Scott; thank you for everything.
You got me into the game thanks man I loved every minute. Rest easy my guy
Can't wait for Cold Steel 3 & 4.
Its already out tho
Gotta be one of those pc players most properly.
Don't be a dick guys, you know it's out only on Japan and that he meant the localization.
This series has meant so much to me and helped me through some really hard times. I wouldn't have given it a chance without your videos. It's changed my life for the better, and your work has changed my life for the better. Whatever happens after you're gone from this world, I hope it's good to you. At peace now.
Marvel: The Avengers is the most ambitious crossover of all time
Falcom: Hold my Mishy
I was just listening to Retronauts explain that no one in games is replicating the template of the Avengers franchise. This may be the closest any series has come.
So sad you passed away, in my mind you will always live somewhere in Armorica Village, in your beloved Crossbell.
@@Jack_80 the sky 3 one is on PC
@@andrewramirez9727 yeah i know, i don't have a pc though. i got a ps5 and my phone. a played sky 1 & 2 and crossbell 1 & 2 on my phone and cold steel 1-4 and reverie on my ps5.
just finished reverie and it's an awesome game but i like cold steel better. cold steel has a lot more exploration, reverie is way more linear.
@@Jack_80 was it worth playing all the games?
@@andrewramirez9727 definitely. sky 1 and 2 were my favorites, and there are subplots from sky and crossbell that get resolved in the cold steel games. many characters from the previous games pop up in cold steel and reverie, and if you haven't played the previous games you won't fully understand what they're talking about.

Trails series is my best setting out of any japanese rpg. The worldbuilding is just astonishing.
back in middle school my older brother literally sat me down and forced me to play trails in the sky FC, now I'm doing the exact same thing to my college roommate lol
thank you for getting me into this wonderful series and you will be missed

I’m so glad I randomly came across this game on Steam a little over the year ago. I whipped through trails in the Sky pretty quickly and I finally got the first game of cold steel recently. I love these games, they definitely don’t get enough recognition
May you rest in peace brother. Thanks for everything.
Never change Falcom. Your games as re fantastic to bits. I love YS and trails a lot. More than other jrpgs
did you ever play nayuta? it's made by falcom and very similar to ys, but better imo. i played it on my phone with an emulator and ps4 controller and it played perfectly and had a very good fan translation. i never played through a whole ys game yet, but i played a little bit of them here and there, and they never pulled me in the way nayuta did.
i did recently buy ys 8, 9, and origins on sale, and will get to them after i finish cold steel 4 and mass effect legendary edition. anyhow if you like ys you really need to try out nayuta if you haven't yet, it's amazing.
I'm still playing through Trails in the Sky SC but man, the developers have built the world very well. I love the series a lot and I wish it received more attention in the west
The worst part when you finish Trails in the sky trilogy and Trails of cold steel I & II is you still need to wait for cold steel III and IV end of saga English announcement :(
Agree first impression is so good I play it non stop.
@@nihildwo4874 Oh solid, that's good to hear! Do you know of a good tutorial on setting up playing those? I thought geofront was making progress on one of them, but the second in the duology wasn't complete / good. Maybe that's incorrect? I'm not super familiar with the correct naming of those.

Do they make any other JRPGs like YS8 that have the same live action fighting?? Can't stand the boring take turns style fighting most JRPGs use, YS8 was so damn good with the live action fighting style!!! On a more serious note - great video about great series.
Im in Cold Steel 1...kinda surprised by how solid the game world is
Trails in the Sky’s characters are the best. Zero and Ao are the best story and Cold Steel has the best gameplay. That’s how I see it. :)
Great video, I have played the first 3 games and this series needs to be more loved, thanks.
I remember when I came across this work of art in a blind way, from the moment I played Trails in the Sky FC, it became my favorite videogame saga. Excellent video!
Seriously...seeing this video did the following things:
1) interrupt my backlog
2) table getting DQ XI and hold off getting FE TH as well
3) subbed to your channel.
RIP Scott, thanks for introducing me to the series.
Hey man rip thank you for getting me into the series that has become one of my favorite jrpg’s of all time
Great quality video! For a channel so small you made such a perfectly edited video and explained the series so well. Seriously good job. Please keep it up, I'd love to see this series expand and become even more popular, especially because of how perfect it is.
10:58 I see what you did there. Makes me Proud.
But honestly, this is very well made. I have played through most of the titles but have yet to finish Ao and Sen III/IV. I can certainly say I enjoyed this video a lot and also liked the nice bit of history of Falcom. Thank you very much for this video!
Probably the only games that I follow and will remain on top spot on my book
Well done. Just finished Sen IV, and find Lucy in your video. This amazed me.
Great video man, I played every localized game in the series and was entertained the whole way through. Keep spreading the love
Trails in the Sky was how I came to know of Falcom and their beautiful masterpieces. It bewildered me how their titles aren't more well known. Thank you for making this video!
Thanks so much for doing this, if I ever want to introduce anyone to this wonderful franchise in the future this video is the top of my list :D
I'm currently playing and finishing Trails of Cold Steel as my first game in the series and I think it has the best story, lore and worldbuilding I have ever seen on a JRPG
when those brand maker like Square Enix, making JRPG's graphic better and better,
they seems forget about the most important of RPG is story.
yep, that's why I love trails series and Falcom.
by the way,I like zero and aoi kiseki the most ,music are too impresive.
I think falcom makes great games in general. I really liked Tokyo xanadu an can't wait to see what they do with that series.
Ahhh, zero no kiseki...
The game where the normal monster encounter music sound like a frickin boss battle...
Absolutely loved the Crossbell duology! They topped Sky Third for me
@@buckroger6456 I also intrigued with how they're going to continue Tokyo Xanadu. Some people dislike it because of how clichéd the character stereotype are, but I still really enjoy it. I also know about falcom and the trails series from this game too !
@@aquatech1753 Tokyo was a low budget game giving to a new team. The ending sets the game up perfectly for another one. The characters are a little weak but I ended up really liking it a lot. I normally don't like action rpgs but ended liking this game. The music beat for when your at school is super catchy.
The ONLY other series I can think of with such a tightly woven narrative where each game is a MUST PLAY to fully understand the world and its characters is Kingdom Hearts, and dare I say, even its narrative isn’t so rich with secrets and events we know next to nothing about like Kiseki is.
Dude I recently started playing the ys series and I am just speechless these people at falcom know how to make an amazing rpg they need more attention
Thanks for this, great and comprehensive overview! Next time I try to convince friends to play this, I'll link them this video instead of explaining myself. My explanations always immediately delve into obscure details no newcomer would be interested in.
I get shivers every time atrocious raid kicks in, I love it
Nice! great video. Falcom one of my favorite developers.

Trails of Cold Steel, because they were my first Trails games and I love them to bits. Also, it has my favorite cast if characters in the series.

This is a super well-edited and scripted video, Scott! I'm glad that I now have a good primer to show people the series with.
Was looking for a video like this for ages, thanks for making this!
Damn, this is so goddamn informative. Really great video. The trails series is easily the best jrpg around. Also, the localization of the sky trilogy is amazing.
Last i checked, there were no plans for a NA release for ToCS III or IV, so thank you for reigniting my hope that it may yet still come to North America ♥
Some background: I picked up Trails of Cold Steel out of spite for a friend of mine, because he said the game wouldn't be that great.
I currently have Trails of Cold Steel on the way and have bought Trails in the Sky on GoG, so i think it's the time.
good news dropped today regarding the crossbell duology
My first Falcom game, Ys: Memories of Celceta, was found at random.
I was at a local game store and asked a worker what games he would recommend to me. He said if you like Action/Adventure or Rpg that I would like it. I almost declined though but he said, "Trust me bro! You will like it."
When I got home and started playing, I was so intrigued that I started searching for more games in the series!!! And from there I went to check out some of Falcom's other titles like the The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel and will be looking forward to playing trying out Tokyo Xanadu as I am now a Falcom fan!!
After completing cold steel 4, trails in the sky is still my favourite!! Incredible to see the evolution with full voice!

As a new fan in 2020, I wanted to say two things:
1. Thank you for this wonderful video, and all of your Trails content.
2. The Geofront team released the Zero patch earlier this year, and are already 75% done with Azure! Huzzah!
It's done now and the Azure patch is out!

I've been playing The Legend of Heroes for a while. Long before they got popular. It's nice to see them finally get the recognition they deserve.
Great video man! I missed nayuta no kiseki but you summarised the most important part to not be a 40m video. Good job and keep it up!
Nayuta has one of the best level design platforms in a action rpg.
This game series is so good. I really really want to play zero and azure, especially after that segment in cold steel 2.
