The original town started at a natural salt lick called Big Lick. When the railroad passed through in 1913, the town moved closer to the railroad and became "Furr Town". In 1915, the name was changed to Oakboro.
The Oakboro Cotton Mill was a major employer in the 1940s and 1950s while cotton was still "king" of the South. Later, the mill moved across the railroad to form Stanly Knitting Mills.

OAKBORO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO WAY!!!!! I was born & raised there. My family still lives there. Never thought in a million years I'd see anyone do a TH-cam video on my home sweet home!!! The olive green bus at 00:58 used to belong to my family. My dad built it out to be like an RV, and we camped in it at bluegrass festivals all summer long. The porch on the back is my favorite feature! :). My grandpa was the Oakboro mailman for many, many years. He has a brick at the railroad museum! Oakboro does a HUGE celebration for the Fourth of July, with a parade, pageants, music competitions, a fair that sets up for the entire week, a big fireworks display.. they really go ALL OUT for a small town! We eat at that Mexican restaurant every time we're in town visiting my grandma. She loves tacos!! My cousins got into a LOT of trouble dumping laundry detergent into that fountain when they were teenagers LOL. Thank you so much for sharing, this brought back sooo many good memories. All of my favorite memories as a child were made with my grandparents right there in the footage you took!

The young lady at the gas station told us about the upcoming events. They start this Friday with the Car Cruise-In. We plan on attending.
Thank you for sharing your family history there. ❤️

@@toddventureI don't know if y'all know this but that first building across from the Variety Pickup where the the cruise in sign is, on side of that building there used to be an old coca cola advertisement sign on the side of it as can be seen in old photographs, if you look on the side you can kind of see a faded outline from where the sign once was on that wall.
