Thanks for putting this out there. I'm a remodeling contractor always looking to up my game. I'm so surprised by the negative comments, what's wrong with these people. Nice job, and thanks for all of your instruction, and also appreciate the Bible verse references.
What’s wrong. Ex Union painter here 40 years experience commercial and residential. Own my own union company at one point in time. 100 ways to do something only a few ways to do it right.
Best way in my opinion, remove door, lay on work table, Sand with 80g/180/220 on the orbital, only flat surfaces, apply jasco or aircraft stripper in groves/mouldings, use steelwool, use afterwash. now you got a bare clean surface in under 1 hr. apply sherwood stain, apply vynl sealer, sand with 320, coat with General finish 450 exterior satin. let dry, sand, re apply clear.. and in under 4 hrs new door.. inbetween times do the same on side panels.. with exception of removal..work on in place. best turn over..and best finish.
I am learning English to understand your videos , you are so good, I am designer painter here in Brazil , and I intend to live and work as a painter in america year. hugs
Great video...saw one of your trucks at a costco parking lot when we took a COVID road trip to Boise from California. Almost wanted to walk up and say hi...thanks for all you do...now I have to look up Psalm 135!!
Put the cans in warm water the spray comes out better some times I've used two cans together to get a better spray pattern. Seriously wear a mask if you can find one.
Hi, I have qsn. for you. Why do you use lacquer on the door and then use a water base Helmsman finish on it. In my area S.Texas humidity and heat is te enemy of many poples fornt door. What do you think about using Wipe on poly instead then Helsmann after wards
Thanks for the videos. I did not see part 3 of the video. The link you posted on the upright corner is another project starting from the scratch. Where to find part 3
Top coat is only as good as the bottom coat. Lacquer can be shaded to blend the door in to look great. However, this is an exterior door lacquer will not last outside. Even lacquer stain. Best to strip it, stain it and apply coats of automotive urethane ( 2 part) sheen of your choice. This will last.
What if you waned to ;put a LIGHTER stain over a darker stain... would you need to completely sand to the bare wood? Also, what do you suggest to fill in cracks in the wood due to weathering
so, you are using spray lacquer for the purpose of "bonding" correct? Because you aren't sure of previous finish? I did catch the instructional mistake at 3:08 so I'm not referring to that part. I can't help but feeling that ALL that sanding rather than stripping first and less sanding would result in a blotchy finish due to previous sun exposure/wear and ect.
Great video and explanation of each process. What would be an accurate quote to give someone who has the same or closely similar entry (Exterior Only)? I an actually going to do a job like this and want to be as accurate as possible when I bid it. It will just be me doing the job. I appreciate any feedback. Thank you
Great video, sanding at the begining, how much do you want to sand it down? until some of hte finish comes off or just to open the pores so the stain goes in?
just the top finish. If you sand too much you'll be removing the patina (the changes in the wood caused by oxidation and sun) and it will stain different and patchy.
I have a door that needs to be refinished like that how much would it cost to do it if I were to pay a handyman? Because I had a handyman he was saying $200 just wondering thank you I live in Southern California
i am refinishing all the doors & door frames in my apt. i sanded the first door, wiped it down then stained it, wiped again but its still a little tacky. I'm about to put the finishing gloss on & hope it looks gd. Now the 2nd door i got lazy and didn't sand just went straight to the stain. when i wiped it the next day, the stain was coming off. its already stained and very tacky. i can't go back & sand it now...what do i do?!?
Hi- I have a question on using sher-wood stain. I noticed it is rated for interior use only- I’m assuming you haven’t encountered many issues using on exterior doors? . Any comments on this would be greatly appreciated.
What's the lacquer for? Is that like the clear cost after staining it? How come u guys don't roll or brush on clear coat on the door? What is lacquer is it water based or oil based product?
Can these products be used on a Fiberglass Door. We have a mix of wood & fiberglass between the door frame, sidelight & front door. Also, it looks like you put the laquer on heavy. What do you do if you get a run?
Can the door be refinished while still in use? I can't take my front door off the hinges and I don't feel safe letting my wife use the back door at night.
What are the steps to staining cause im trying to learn...my boss doesnt want to teach us...what i saw he did was use lacquer to clean...sand...and then staind and added something that smelled like bubblegum then sanded again and sprayed clear...he used something called bac wiping stain and i dont know what else
Did you sand all of the old poly/varnish off the door and sidelights before you stained it? If you don't the stain won't penetrate and it will take forever to dry, correct?
@@age_of_reason Maybe you should actually listen to the video Poindexter. The vertical windows on either side of an entry door are called SIDELIGHTS as indicated by the Idaho Painter at 0:03 into this video.
I noticed you guys double masked the sides of the doors... Lowes sells 18" paper masking paper. I like to use the the 18" because you use less tape... u don't have to put a second layer of tape and paper to secure your walls for over spray. just something I wanted to point out
I couldn't see how bad the checking was near the base of the weathered door. Would you ever consider using a wood filler for hairline cracks? If starting from raw White Oak or African Mahogany, would you bother with an oil-based wood grain filler mixed in if you were using an oil-based wiping stain on Oak or Mahogany finished with a Spar Varnish?
Man I wish I would of seen this before we needed to completely strip the 10k door. Now we have stripper stains then I used dremel in corners boss freaked cause made grooves. Well I'm making my boss watch this.
I just recommended a interior varathane stain closest to what the customer had as possible, in coordination with a exterior oil based poly to refinish their exterior door. I forgot to recommend sandpaper. Lol I’m an idiot but at least I didn’t screw it up too bad.
PPG Proluxe is the best product for exterior doors. Water based polyurethane is never a good idea on exterior doors, even if it’s a spar poly. Just my opinion.

I'm confused why you shouldn't strip it? Even though you are lightly sanding it, it seems that there would still be some of the previous poly on it which wouldn't take the new stain. ?? Comments please since I have two of these exact doors to do real soon.
hey Chris So when I stained a chair that I have I used a Minwax pre-stain, stained it, and used a Polyurethane. However after I finished it, it ended up being where some parts look like there was something smeared on there. Do you think the issue is that I may have not wiped off enough of the excess stain?
Hi, good video just asking, how many coats of stain, and one thing the can should not be shaken since it will have air bubbles. Use a wide piece of metal or wood to stir. Cheers

I do slightly agree though as I have a Refinishing business and the canned lacquer made me cringe since I know you have the proper equipment man. man that finish is so uneven and i suspect it was originally and that is why it had faded so unevenly. I would have got an orbital sander on this to get it back to the bare wood and start all over again as it looks terrible.
I can tell somebody died in that house , If You look on the right top corner of the Video when the 2nd painter moves in to sand the door, 3-5 seconds you will see an "Orb" moving around or Flying Around in the Video.

I'd like to see you do a video on restaining a fiberglass door that has woodgrain. How do you do it without sanding (which would ruin the fake grain.)
I watched part 1 and 2 ... but where is part 3 ? Part 2 includes applying the Sherwood Glaze ... but what happens next ??

Actually the Rust O Leum Lacquer is a nice product
About how many cans of lacquer did that take?
Lacquer is for interior surfaces
why did you use a spray can lacquer instead of on airless?
Instead of wiping on the stain try brushing on the stain on a light uniform way would work out a better way
......then wipe excess......
