    Je me rappelle que dans les années 70 je m'étais rendu de Sofia a Florina,via Thessaloniki.j'arrive au quai de départ,le wagon grec se trouvait juste derrière la locomotive (à vapeur !),un contrôleur des BDZ se trouvait au bas du wagon et a bien vérifié que j'avais bien un titre de transport pour au-delà de la frontière.Nous n'étions que 2 ou. 3 ans ce wagon,qui était isolé du reste du convoi,on ne pouvait pas aller plus loin que ce wagon.Les autres voyageurs étaient entassés comme des sardines dans les 4 ou 5 wagons qui suivaient.
    Arrivés à Kulata nous avons attendu au moins 2 heures en plein soleil.Les douaniers et la police sont passés,une petite locomotive à vapeur grecque s'est accrochée au wagon et nous a emmené en Grèce.Arrivés à Promachon,notre wagon a été accroché à un train qui venait d'Istanbul et le voyage a continué.
    Les contrôles étaient très sévères,c'était sous le régime des colonels,le militaire voulait voir ce que j'avais enregistré sur mon magnétophone,ce n'était que de la musique folk bulgare.

    I wonder what the grade is? It looks quite steep. Going up it looks like it would be a struggle. Going down it looks terrifying.

    As everywhere - the railway in the mountains is the most beautiful 🚞.
    Such an observation - in the Balkans at many stations there are no plaques with the name of the town at all. This for a tourist can be a big obstacle. 🤔

    What do they do at the new underpass at 4:00? Build up enough forward momentum & coast through the unpowered section? What is with those dark brown ties at those intervals? Do they remove the ballast from locations where a rail joint is made?
    Sure is good they got rid of the steam power that used to move up & down the tracks here 60 years ago. Electrification is much cleaner. Looks like a fairly smooth ride.

      I think that you're right, even though it seems that the brakes are activated before the underpass. The same tactic is used in Romania near Arad, where a railroad crosses a tram track and, since the power line for the tram is lower than the one for the train, the locomotive is required to lower its pantograph until it passes the tram track.
      Those are actually wooden sleepers, they provide a more elastic fixation base for the joints on the ends of the track segments, when the tracks are subject to the thermal dilatation during summer and compression during winter.

      Val Atnv They use forward momentum to "roll" through? Most systems, remove the power completely & the coaches go into emergency stop! Unusual & different!

      To roll without electric power was (is?) usual at changing electricity network. E.g. at Austria-Italia border at Brenner pass.

      +pega17pl That is about 400 meters without power! Normally when doing so, these machines use adaptive cross phasing transition power control for those coaches having a pantograph mounted on them! The break without power is usually less than 2 meters.
      On the newer equipment, if the power is removed for anything more than 7 seconds, the brakes are automatically applied for it is detected as an "off the rails", (OTR) & "not under the centenary" (NUTC) condition which would be a "wreck state" for the controllers! In this condition, brakes are applied & not removed until the equipment is power applied again & goes through a complete startup process again which can take as long as 120 seconds.
