Step onto the adrenaline-fueled flight deck of the USS George Washington (CVN-73) as Navy Shooters undergo rigorous training in this captivating video. Witness the precision, focus, and teamwork required as these elite personnel hone their marksmanship skills in a dynamic and challenging environment.
Today we are on the bow, we are watching MIL power catapult shots during day carrier qualification. These pilots are Naval Flight Students, working towards their wings of gold on a hot August day, 75 miles east of Jacksonville, FL.
You may wonder why there are two Shooters (in yellow shirts) standing side-by-side, making similar hand signals. The Shooter in the FRONT is under instruction and is practicing the hand signal cadence of the fully-qualified Shooter behind him. This is the Navy-way of training personnel on the flight deck.
At time 2:28, a student did not line up on the catapult correctly, so the deck crew pushed the jet backwards for another try. T-45s only weight around 12,500 pounds, so we can push the jet back with a handful of Sailors. All other jets on the flight deck are too heavy to push and would be required to taxi off the catapult on their own power, turn around, then try to line up on the nose gear launch track again.

I was a Shooter on CVN-74 The Mighty Stennis from 2001-2003 OEF. Long at-sea periods. I swear I could smell the exhaust watching this video. Oddly, I feel like I could walk out onto a flight deck and start launching immediately. That shit got BAKED into my brain.
Pail, thanks for highlighting this under appreciated and not well understood job that most Naval Aviators and Naval Flight Officers have to do in their career.
Is this a job an enlistee could aspire to? Someone could enlist in the Navy to be a shooter or other launch job?
No, this is an Officer job. Watch my sunset catapult VO, there is an enlisted almost equivalent.
@michaelm9623 An enlisted AB-E could train to be whats called a Topside PO. They're on the flight deck during bubble ops as an additional set of eyes and supervision of the other junior enlisted.
The bubble is a chamber that is stowed below deck and lifted to just above deck height during flight ops...it's like a 2-person tank with the catapult monitoring and launch instruments.
Being a Shooter isn't just an Offiers job, it's brown shoe only...

I was in the Air Force and worked out on the flightline as a fuel system mechanic. I know what you mean about the smell of JP-4 burning. I always liked the smell. Still recognize it when we are at the airport sometimes and the wind is blowing in the right direction.
Every time a plane took off, I heard in Growlers voice ‘Fly Navy!’

Its like these jets just spawn out of nowhere one after the other lol. Such an efficient operation that you don't even notice them taxing up! Amazing.
I have a burnt in memory of my carquals as an advanced jet student flying an F-9 Cougar off the USS Intrepid in 1969. (The same week at the moon landing.) I had just completed a touch & go or bolter and heard a radio scream: "Rotate! Aircraft off the angle deck, Rotate!"
What that meant or to whom it was directed was somehow not immediately clear. But I recall glancing to my right and looking up at the aircraft and crew on the bow catapults! Oh, he means me, as I made a remarkably gentle pullup.
That evening everyone on deck and in the pattern commented how at the first "Rotate!" call the entire traffic pattern rose about 500 feet!.

I remember reading an anecdote in the HOOK mag years ago. Went something like 'Aircraft off the cat you are on fire EJECT!! 3 or 4 crews on deck ejected at the one time. Would have been something to see.

My father (22 years in Royal Navy) used to say the flight deck was the most dangerous place on the planet. You see these guys launching the aircraft while there are bolters blasting by just a few yards away and yes, I would say he's right. So much kinetic energy and potential for mistakes, which makes it so great to see how the next crew get trained. Wonderful video. Thank you!

I will never forget the first time I saw a white & orange fighter go screaming overhead! My knees were weak & certain parts got damp! I spent a while on Google trying to figure out what I had just seen…too fast to process anything but the colors. I still get tingles over that! Fly Navy

I'm a mere clerk in the Gift Shop and the Midshipmen Store at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, and I couldn't be prouder when I remember that all profits go to supporting The BrIgade of Midshipmen. My Dad was a Lieutenant JG in WWII - though not an Academy Grad or a career officer - and I know that he's very happy and proud of that.

My father was in the Royal New Zealand Navy during WWII (as a radio/comms operator IIRC). Just like him, I have a huge love for (and respect for) the sea. I love ships and boats - gooooo *NAVY!*
A few years ago, I attended Speedweek up on the Bonneville Salt Flats. I stood next to the starting line to watch the streamliners start.
When the person gave the command to proceed, I thought that was the coolest thing I had ever seen.
To be the one that gives the command would be the second best job in the world. Some of those vehicles have over 5000 horsepower!
Then I watch these people in action and all of a sudden, 5000 horsepower cars seem like a child's toy!

I'm a fighter enthusiast so I recognized the T-45 of course. What's so cool is it looks to me like this is a day where they're training the deck crew. fucking amazing, makes me with I'd have joined the Nave back in the day.

Great videos. I live about 5 miles from NAS Meridian. I see the T45 almost daily and still pause and watch every time. If you ever train over here and have time for a wakeboard or wakesurf session. Hit me up. Students and instructors live all over this lake.
T45 - Thx. I kept thinking A4 (TA4) but it didn't look right, even as a trainer. So I looked it up and as a servicemember 80/83 I hadn't seen these before.

Mate, this is a great demonstration of how busy the flight deck is and why they say, "keep your head on a swivel". Planes practicing landings on the deck, blokes lining up planes. Hectic. Great video, thank you for taking the time to film, edit and release.

I own a small private plane and met so many of these young guys when we stayed the night in Meridian, MS. They actually had my plane parked next to all these little trainer jets, it was cool. I can't imagine getting to do this stuff for a living!! I would have done it in a heartbeat if it wasn't for my vision. Thanks for the video of them on the deck!! Their instructors were top notch and very friendly and talkative when you thought they may have had some big chip on their shoulder, they actually wanted to come see the plane. Love it buddy.

I love watching these videos. I lost track of how many hours I spent on the O-11 aboard Enterprise watching flight ops. After seeing everything from a distance, it's great to see it up close in these videos. I was always impressed by the activity on the flight deck. There is so much going on at any given moment; and all of it dangerous. You really have to observe all the various activity on deck for quite a while to get an appreciation for just how complex an operation it is. Then you talk to somebody who works on the flight deck, or watch a Growler Jams video, and you realize there is about ten times more stuff going on that you didn't even notice. I know it's an old cliche, but flight deck operations really is a tremendously intricate ballet of men and machines.

While mine was 58 years ago on a carrier that is now a museum and in an aircraft that is lone gone from Naval Service, I can still remember every part of it. The first time is seared in your memory, the following hundreds not so much. Mine was in a T-28 landing on the USS Lexington (CVS 16 at the time). No cat shots, with 1500HP and a prop, we deck launched, but the signals and process was the same except for the crewman pushing the button.
What is not shown are the day and hours upon hours of training gone through before that day. I remember when those of us had finished the T-34 portion were gathered and the instructor asked how many of us were to get our wings that day. After all we now had 30 hours of flight time which a civilian student would get his ticket. No hands went up because we knew better. Then the first part of the T-28 training and learning about torque roll. If you were flying straight and level and went to full throttle and did not lead with rudder, the aircraft would roll 180 degrees from the force of the torque to the prop. (The F-4U Corsair would do a 360 degree roll). Then the first time hitting the carrier in the T-28 after more hours and learning to live the the back side of the power curve. (Where you apply more power to fly slower with a nose high attitude). After we got or first few landings, off to another training command. This time in the older S-2A modified for training, then more carrier landings. Finally after 15 months, we got our wings.
But then off to another training, this time in the aircraft we would fly in the fleet. More carrier landings and finally off our our first duty assignment in a carrier based squadron. Now the carrier landings when at sea were on a daily routine. But every landing is graded by the LSO so we don't get complacent.
Great story. I actually flew the T-34 man years ago.

I know there is no way this could ever compare but I still remember my first time out of the starting gates as a young jockey in 2009. Completely on another planet compared to land or taking off an aircraft carrier. I always imagined it would keep you high for a few days and have that did I really just do that feeling
@@GrowlerJams Officly the Mentor, we called her the Teeny Weeny. It was a modified Bonanza with a T tail instead of the V tail. And a military cockpit.

I live in Coffeeville Alabama. I served on the flight deck on The U.S.S ORISKANY AND U.S.S. ENTERPRISE. Those trainers fly over my trailer all the time. Plus N.A.S. John Steness ( not sure of spelling) practice over us also. Tons of low level flight over me. Also watch in flight refueling. I worked with F-14's from NAS Miramar. Squadron's we're VF-1 WOLF PACK AND VF-2 BOUNTY HUNTERS. BEST RIME IN MY LIFT. GO NAVAL AIR.

When I saw the first plane come in for a trap, it sure looked like he was coming in too fast. Then I noticed that there was barely any wind coming over the deck as normally the deck crew face 20-30 kts of wind and you often see the wind whipping their sleeves and see them leaning into it. Great vid! Kudos from an old hummer driver from VAW-123.

I marvel at the "Dance". It is so neat seeing the communication that is taking place by simple yet very effective hand gestures and positioning of limbs.
Being an Air Support Operations Operator in the Corp I have a strong appreciation for clear concise effective communication. It saves lives. We mostly had one shot at that communication, so trust is massive.

I flew P-3s. The closest we came to carrier aviation was flying no-flap landings. That's the only time we'd fly AoA because of that huge phallic symbol on the back of the aircraft. Lots of fun.
I did a deployment to Adak (now abandoned) in 1990. There's a book, "Adak, The Rescue of Alfa Foxtrot 586" which details a ditching by a P-3 in the Bering Sea. The crew survived the ditching unscathed, but winds blew the crew and life rafts all to hell. The PPC was lost at sea and a couple more died from exposure. You guys had your obstacles, we had ours! Proud to be a Naval Aviator!
