How about instead of having to disclose you’re a world champion (at anything), you have to disclose you’re likely to write an article about your first date and publish it internationally

Being an unsuccessful dork that wastes time on trivial hobbies is one thing. Being a magic world champion / pro is a completely different thing.

Sadly surprisingly common. When my dating profile said "game designer" as I'm a professional game designer for board and video games almost no women wrote back or wrote me. When I changed it to "interactive system designer" suddenly I got way more hits. Granted none of those women actually cared when it went further than a profile view, unlike this writer.

  • @rowerewolf

Jon Finkel's crime is that he spent a lot of time participating in a hobby instead of being into Alyssa Bereznak. He was a partner for a small hedge fund. She was an intern for Gizmodo. He brought a whole lot more to the table than she did. She screwed up. And her name is now out there as a warning for future potential partners.
She apparently thinks a man should give up all of his friends and interests in order to be in a relationship with her. I'm pretty sure I read a letter to Ann Landers, from a woman whose husband or boyfriend was trying to separate her from her old friends and interests, and the advice columnist correctly responded that she was in an abusive relationship. Alyssa Bereznak is a likely future abuser.
Now, the best part of this article, is that shortly after it happened, Jon Finkel placed in the Top 8 of a Pro Tour and won $4,000. So that time he spent preparing paid off. What did Alyssa Bereznak do that weekend? Whatever it is that Gizmodo interns do... probably go home to a one bedroom apartment shared with two roommates, where she then cried deeply.

Fun topic for a video. I do think the original article veered more into the realm of slander for the purpose of readership than a encouraging women to date people they have something in common with. Implying that Jon "infiltrated his way into OKCupid dates" and that he isn't a "normal guy" and to beware of "a guy who takes you to a one-man show based on Jeffrey Dahmer's life story" is over the top. Without that what are you left with? A bland article that no one would read because it told the story of 99% of first dates in America. People getting to know each other and finding out they aren't compatible. As a guy who is married to a non-geeky woman who wants nothing to do with my MTG hobby, I can also say it is very shallow to imply that people are only compatible if they share 100% of their interests. The article also seems to encourage people to not scratch the surface when they meet someone and just to run with their preformed judgements of something they know little about. In the end, both Jon and the writer moved on with life with minimal consequences. However, I do think this take on the article is a very generous one towards the publisher and author.

But if she's into gaming, I'll just drop that I play, then build up if she's into more intense stuff than just "Yeah, I play a couple of mobile games when I'm on break at work to pass the time." I'm more likely to lead with being a musician since I wear that on my sleeve a lot more.

I have my own history (tho not romantic lol), it was summer 1995, went on a two-month vacation on a small beach. I brought my Magic decks and collection with me. I went to a bar, ordered a milkshake, I was alone and started organizing my cards at the table. To my surprise, the owner of the bar went to talk with me and said he also played Magic. We started playing Magic in one of his bar tables every day, and the neighborhood and bar patrons who didn't have any idea what was Magic started watching us around the table. The lifeguard of the beach also had magic decks and became an opponent too lol. The crowd definitely thought it was too nerdy at first, but after a few days more people also got interested in the game and bought starter and booster packs to play. It started with 3 people playing the game and when my vacation was over, it was 20+ people playing Magic at that bar. It was fantastic. I stopped playing in 2001 but I have a lot of good memories thanks to this game.

World's biggest L. Imagine being an average looking girl dating an average or slightly above WEALTHY guy who's not likely to cheat on her because he's too busy preparing for a magic tournament, working a part time job, and is with her. 🙄

“But it was a cautionary tale…”. What’s the caution about then?

    1) She’s just mildly cute. Her job is not superior.
    2) Don’t date a journalist. She’d write an article about you after you break up.

Dont try to get a girlfriend when she is not into your hobby and you cant live without it. She will never understand you and you will find yourself often in the same weird situation that you must make choices: Ohhhh and she will be hurt if you are not choosing her.
That kind of relationship depends on very limited circumstances and dont have any future. A gamer should meet a gamergirl, a metalhead should be together with a sweet metalgirl. The live is too short that people trying change their partners. Dont do it, even if you are find them attractive or have feelings, in a longterm relationship are such differences a bad sign. If you dont fit, then let it be.

I really appreciate your videos. The time and effort you put into the depth of each subject, the way you deliver the material. From one aspiring content creator to an established one, thank you for the inspiration. You just do a great job and I know how difficult it is to hit the mark. Bravo sir.
