    Steve, another great video. I am especially impressed with how you have made numerous upgrades to what many would call "lesser machines". Small additions like button oilers are what has been left off the less expensive lathes that has the effect of improving the operation of the lathe. I have a small request...please make a new video each day so I can watch with my morning coffee!

    Thank you for the video Steve. I was one of those who purchased the live center set from Banggood that you bought. And it came without the extractor part. Well they have sent the missing part to me yesterday. So you can tell your viewers that Banggood does to what they say they will and they made the set right. Thanks again for your insight and information.

    Steve, Thanks again for another great video. I made a smaller milling platform some time ago and it worked fine with aluminum and brass. Recently I tried with bright steel trying to mill a T-nut and had a scare when the cutter rode up and chewed up my workpiece shifting the whole setup mounted on the cross-slide disk. The extra screw on top should secure things up, will give it a go.

    very useful video indeed.
    I like how you don't skip a single step in your upgrades, so we can all follow it like the instructional video. and we can learn from your choices too
    PS
    I always turn off / unplug the machines when changing chuck / tools etc. I've had quite a few near misses, I had pieces of metal flying next to my temple and so on.

    ER collets are one my favorites. They have a relatively huge clamping range, about 1 mil, so you don't need to buy a wide range of collets.

    Thanks for the video and the links. I've been needing a new set of center drills and countersinks. Since you seem to have good luck with them, I just placed my first order with Bangood. . Fingers crossed.

      Hi Ian Thanks,...Yes it just looks and feels right, although I didn't have any noticeable movement without it.

      I agree, if nothing it just looks right lol I finished mine two days ago, even with just the two fixings, I cannot move it, and there is no vibration or deviation when milling, I'm delighted with it! But I'll definitely stick in that third hole because I don't have a travel steady, I'll be doing a self build on that, so I'll need that third fixing, seen as the steady will be more to that end. Cheers Steve, keep the vids coming 👍

    Steve,
    nice set of videos for the mini-lathe,I noticed you did not give any details of material sizes you used to make the milling pallet. Care to elaborate on the pallet? I would most likely spec something way to big for the lathe hence the question.
    Thanks in advance ,keep up the good work

    Hi Steve........I do appreciate how you constantly preach stabiility over and over again. As an old(71yrs) beginner I don't really understand how the angle plate front can be 100% vertical. Did tou test the milling plate outside the videos? Plates found here in Sweden are not 100% flat (unless very expensive). Dare I flatten a plate on my mini by pressing the plate against the 4-jaw chuck with a M12 drawbar? Other issues: re the countersink + drill bits you show,. Are you still pleased with them? re ER32 is there any practical difference (apart from through capability) in milling with the collet chuck or the collet holder? Many thanks for yr efforts.

    Steve, thanks again for a super video. I'm trying to remove the 3-jaw chuck on my mini-lathe for the ER32 attachment like yours. When I take out the nuts and washers from the three studs, the chuck seems to be stuck in place even after several hits from a rubber mallet. Any thoughts other than hitting it a bit harder?

    Great video, much appreciated. At 12:22 - please tell me you are NOT using "split-ring lock washers" as they often fail to hold, and/or damage the surface where used. Much better to use hardened flat washers when using nuts & bolts on metal materials; both for better gripping, and for less wear to the bolting surface.

    • @SteveJordan
      @SteveJordan  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jim, No these are just ordinary 8mm washers. I don't like split washers either.

    • @Changtent
      @Changtent 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Steve. It's kind of a 'pet peeve' of mine after 40 years as an industrial hd mechanic. The 'all-too-common' split-ring lock washers cause many problems rather than prevent them as intended. Yet traditional sales-pitch still makes people think they need them. Flat washers are most often the better way to go.

    Hi Steve, I counted 9 grub screws in your cross slide, which I assume is also to provide additional rigidity. Have you produced a video to cover this too?

    • @SteveJordan
      @SteveJordan  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Alan. I didn't do a video on this one as it is just the same type of procedure as on the compound slide. It is just a case of removing the slide, using a set scriber tool to mark the centres of the screw holes. Scribe the full length of the slide, then use a fine centre punch to mark where you want the new screw holes. I then carefully centre drilled, pilot drilled and core drilled the holes for 2BA threads and tapped squarely by hand. You can use 4mm threads if you prefer. If I get time I may show this at a later date.

      OK thanks a lot for the info Steve. Just wondering how many additional "gib adjust" screws and how many "carriage lock" you recommend. I am very new to this game!!

    Hey Steve, love your work, thanks! Looking forward to the collet review
    I have one question: you've linked the 100mm collet chuck - and I can see that it certainly fits your machine - but isn't the mini-lathe spindle face plate usually 80mm diameter? I'm confused! Cheers - Andrew

    • @SteveJordan
      @SteveJordan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Andrew, They make two different sizes 80mm or 100mm. I think Banggood do an 80mm ER32 chuck in the same type, but I have't looked at it to see the back fitting. You can buy the 100mm Mini Lathe spindles from Amadeal and change them over if you are confident in taking the head-stock apart. Regards Steve

      Ah, ok. Thanks! Glad I didn't order the one from the link!

    • @andrewmcnulty0
      @andrewmcnulty0 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew McWhirter you can buy a 100mm back plate from arc eurotrades site, surely that would fit the 100mm collet chuck?

    • @andrewmcwhirter2238
      @andrewmcwhirter2238 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess but as Steve points out there is another version that I believe (if the reviews are accurate) fits straight on the standard 80mm mini lathe spindle. And it's considerably cheaper than the 100mm ER32 version that is linked above. Search Banggood for "80mm Diameter ER-32 Collet Chuck" Cheers - Andrew

    Two things, why do you never use lubricant/coolant (like alcohol or tap fluid or something) in those heavy cuts? It makes me grind my teeth seeing that! :) Could you please tell me where to get a ER32 collet that can hold a 1 inch (25.4mm) diameter rod? Thank you so very much.

    • @DuteHart
      @DuteHart 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ER 32 collets max out at .787. For one inch you would need to go to ER 40 collets.

    • @barrymcdowell4852
      @barrymcdowell4852 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glosser tools have ER32 collets in 21,22,23,24 and 25 mm, not cheap but my suit if you do not want to go to an ER40 set.
      They may also have imperial equivalent.

    Darn it, I don't know why I haven't seen this one before, I noticed it just recently when browsing banggood but I ended up getting MT3 collet holder from Shars which is much better quality but doesn't have throughput ability :(
