He produced the best era. The writing and stories were incredible.

Not just the writing and stories though. I don't know whether you've seen the exceptional documentary on his era "Serial Thrillers", I assume you have, but it really sums up how everything came together on the programme at that time. Great producer, great script editor, great Doctor, great companions, great designers, great directors.

@@TOTRAVEL-f3c He and Holmes were so good that they made what came before just and most of the post Williams era weak and poor.

His comparison of how it was filmed in Ye Olde Days as a sort of stage performance I think gets at the heart of what's so great about those old episodes: they were basically filmed stage plays. Every culture has its best narrative art form, the thing it does better than anyone else. In Italy, it's opera. France has dance, Germany has literature, and the US has blockbuster films. In the UK, it's theater. Their live theater is second-to-none. And that's basically what Who was in those days: sci-fi fantasy live theater. No wonder it was so damned good. And sure the sets were wobbly -- Macbeth and Macduff fight with rubber swords, too. Who cares? That's not the point.

Mr. Hinchcliffe looks very well indeed.
I wish he was back in the seat and producing decent WHO.

Great interview. Philip Hinchcliffe has been behind so many great TV shows. A genuine quality running throughout his work. As he says himself the 70s and 80s were a truly good time for making television. Love his work on Who. Also fond of Private Schultz, Target, The Charmer and Rebus. Recently I have been watching a couple of shows he script edited before his stint on Who - The Jensen Code and The Kids at 47A, whose other main writer was Phil Redmond.

I wish we would see two weeks of rehearsal again, as I believe it affords more affinity among the actors, and improves the script.

Ha ha! The accountants would never allow it nowadays. The money is spent on the shooting.

@@MALONEYCAMFIELD Sad but true - and it means that many productions never qualify as meaningful, functional culture :( However: change is the only constant, so make it happen :)

@@fellowcitizen There's an interesting conversation about rehearsals on the DVD commentary for Mawdryn Undead between Peter Davison and Nicholas Courtney. Courtney regretted the loss of rehearsals and getting to know the other actors, but Davison thought the old shows were over-rehearsed and you don't really see the benefit on the screen.

@@MALONEYCAMFIELD Thanks! Might even fire up Mawdryn Undead today. Sounds like them - Peter does change his mind about things, though. He seems quite different from his Doctor persona.

I like this interviewer ….he asked questions I wouldn’t have thought to ask. It was a different take than “what was person X like to work with “

A great listen :) And a great vocal prescence...as he's now "canon," I can't help wondering, would he ever do a turn at Big Finish as his Pre-Hartnell (Morbius Doctor) incarnation? And what does he think about all that, anyway? Was there ever a time, during his tenure, when he recieved divisive opinion from fans - as opposed to one from, say, a certain moral guardian - regarding forays into "canon" and "lore?"
I appreciate the full interview is already recorded! Just a few thoughts there, for if I was ever lucky enough to be in your shoes, lol. Looking forward to Part 2 - great Premier thumbnail!
