    I did not like the HM 300 until I got the mids under control. The mid knob seems to have a shelf right around 11 o’clock where it goes from a nice, smooth metal, to a raspy distortion. The distortion is still good at about 2 o’clock on down. Once I figured it out, it found its way back on my board.

    One trick for the dimed sound on the HM300 is to pull back the Mid EQ slightly back from the max level. It’s surprisingly closer to the Swedish sound than fully dimed.

    I did buy the HM300 when I heard that it was a very close clone to the rediculasly priced HM-2. I'm happy with it. I'm not a metal head at all. I use it for shoegaze style stuff in front of ambient reverbs and delays. Works great for that.

    What a lot of people tend to forget about when going after this particular tone. You can not forget about having a bad ass bass tone to compliment this acquired taste of a guitar tone!!!
    Only then, will you have the full onslaught, the full malevolence, and the full brutality that you are seeking for!!
    Yes, on your amp settings you can adjust them to add in some low end if you are just playing by yourself and not in a band setting, or studio setting.
    Let's not forget about the pioneers that utilized this crushing guitar tone....
    Entombed, Dismember, Grave....to just name a few old bands....122 Stab Wounds, and now Gatecreeper!!!!

    I love these Behringer pedals for home studio use. I have about 10 now. Now that Sweetwater sells them for $20, how can you go wrong. Even at the regular $30 price, they're great! If I was still playing live and stomping on the I'd be concerned they wouldn't last, but I mainly have them on a desk top and use my hands on them. For $20, I just might buy a few more just for fun! Great demo Eric.

    • @EricMerrow
      @EricMerrow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are a ridiculous deal! I bet they could work really well on a board with a loop switcher where you weren’t actually stomping on the pedals themselves.

    In my personal opinion i really dislike the Hm2/Swedish Chainsaw tone in anything higher than.. idk.. C# standard tuning.. It just sounds too fizzy to my ears. Still a great comparison though! Behringer makes pretty much identical clones of pedals and that to me is absolutely awesome.

  • @conorfowler
    @conorfowler 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I actually thought the Behringer sounded better when maxed out, sounded like there was a bit more low end in there. The Boss edged it in the other comparisons for me, but there's really not a world of difference between the two. HM-6 is a beast too, great demo!

    I have a TC Electronic Eyemaster, another HM-2 clone but without the tone controls (since everyone apparently just maxes them out anyways lol). It's a similar price point as the Behringer but true bypass and in a metal enclosure. Great pedal as well IMO!

      The HM-2's Color Mix are
      active tone controls.
      Lo controls bass, and Hi
      controls mid and treble.

  • @binface9
    @binface9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I preferred the HM-2 because of the tighter bass response when dimed - but I'll still pick up the HM300 because of the bargain price. I can always rein in the bass response. I'd be interested to try running this circuit as a treble-booster - that was my immediate thought when you dimed the treble.

    I hear some subtle differences between the two, but they are so damn close.
    The way I see it is if you got the cash, can find a Boss HM-2 and are a collector of vintage or discontinued pedals, then go for it. If you're going for the signature sound and don't want to break the bank then the HM300 is for you.
    If you are worried about the cheap construction then I suggest using a switcher. Added expense sure, but the Behringer is already super cheap.

  • @needsLITHIUM
    @needsLITHIUM 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The trick was to either A.) use it as a boost with the gain at 8 or 9 o'clock in front of your usual amp settings in place of your usual clean boost or OD pedal, or B.) use it on your clean channel, preferably with a little bit of grit or on edge of break up, but clean enough where on your neck pickup or with a touch of the volume control on your axe it will clean right up. Then, you layer that, usually compressed in post, with your usual boosted tube amp's guitar tone for a quad track setup for your rhythm guitars, with the HM-2 being slightly quieter - around 2 dB difference - in the mix. Your tube amp still has all the clarity, dynamic range, etc., and then the HM-2 is super compressed, aggressive, and filthy. If your amp is dialed to just barely get into high gain territory when boosted with an OD or clean boost, this is ideal, because then your leads will have a less saturated, more vocal quality, and your quad tracked rhythm tone will just be crushing. A lot of bands used the HM-2 through either a solid state amp, a Marshall valvestate, or some other British or German voiced amp like a JCM 800/900 or something, while their main amp tone was usually a Peavey 5150, an SLO-100, a Dual Rectifier, etc., often boosted with an Ibanez Tube Screamer of some kind or Boss SD-1. Some American death metal bands would replace the HM-2 with an MT-2 with a similar process to both playing live and recording.

      Thanks for some tips, and I was sort of doing some of this things you mentioned anyway.
      I have an older Solid State Kustom Quad head that actual sounds decent on its own....well It is going into a a Marshall 1960 4x12 cab with vintage 30's in it....
      Right now, I have the MT-2 Waza Craft reissue, and I'm going in the front end of the clean channel and it honestly rips my face off!!!!
      Yes, there are videos suggesting to go through the FX loop, but honestly, I'm not sure my amp even has one to begin with!!!?????

    Great video Eric!!! I’m a Behringer fan, so I’m leaning towards the HM 300 sound, although I have to be honest, I’m not crazy about that particular voice with either unit. The Behringer HD 300 Heavy Distortion I absolutely love!!! If you get the chance, check it out. Also I’m not sold on the opinion that these pedals won’t hold up to road use. Maybe some day I can prove that. Anyway, great job as always Eric!!!🤘🤘🤘

      Chris, dude, thank you as always! I honestly think that I prefer the Behringer overall to the Hm-2. To me, it seemed like the HM300 had a bit more full sounding bass which I dig. Is the Heavy Distortion the metal zone clone?

    Some people will also use it as a layer underneath a classic voiced amp, like an orange or vox on lower gain, or a plexi or jtm45 on medium gain to get a very doom metal, Ghost inspired or old school Sabbath adjacent tones, especially in guitars with a single coil in the neck and a PAF in the bridge, or a p90 in both slots, using the middle position, so long as your bridge pickup isn't too hot and aggressively voiced (I.E. active pickups or something like a DiMarzio X2N/SD Invader won't get you these types of tones as the low end is too focused for clarity and aggressive, percussive palm mutes - better suited with playing Dying Fetus than Candlemass)

  • @americafirst847
    @americafirst847 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    They definitely sound so much better when you connect these to your effects loop. If you run it through the front they both sound like crap.I realized that it sounded great through the effects loop. I ordered one of these for $20 on Sweetwater but I soon realized they bumped up the price by five and they’re all sold out of everything Behringer. I had to order it from Amazon but it’s taken about a month to get.
