@@lucasmarchette10 S5 uses double shifting in any mode thus pixelation is absent. As to the sharpness of FullHd there's no noticeable difference between 0.23, 033 and even (no-shifting) 0.47

Great and honest review. I am wondering whether to choose the Formovie S5 or the Xgimi Elfin which has a larger 0.33 DMD, optional 3D and official GoogleOS. Too bad you didn't have the opportunity to make such a video about the Elfin and include it in your ranking.
Have one myself with a V10 from Formovie too. Great projector, small, powerful, silent (pricey too but that's to be expected).if you can get it on sale don't hesitate for an easy to carry projection (if you travel a lot for business for example).

Great Video Jayce, One question when any FHD projector claims it support 4K, does that mean FHD projector will upscale resolution to show 4K content ? or 4K content will be downgraded to FHD res?
I have the S5 and I am very happy. The only problem I have is I wish it had better contrast. I have it with a white screen (Venor 100" PVC Screen). So , do you believe on an grey metal anti light screen have better results? Like contrast and colors ? If yes i'll buy one , i already have the metal frame from my White screen.

@@jayceooiI bought it, but mine came with FengOS 3.0.2.3164 - looks very different. Not happy at all. I cannot activate sideload apps and it is not very usable. Can you maybe advice? Maybe give instructions on how to use the system?
Thanks for the review Jayce!! My sitting/viewing distance from projection screen is ard. 12 ft and projection screen is 7.5 x 5 ft. This will produce an 100 inch screen (16:9). I can place the projector by the side wall ard. 7-8 ft away from the screen. The room has curtains but natural light is there if a projector is used in daytime. Although Dangbei Atom is brighter and shows more detail but I like Formovie S5 better for its natural colours and sound. My dilemma is how will the picture from both (Atom & S5) look from a 12 ft viewing distance? Should I get S5 or Atom? Thanks in advance 🙂

@@jayceooi Hi Jayce. I bought the S5 using your link above and got the projector today in India. Was able to load Projectivy and got some of your settings in as well. But after a couple of hours it showed a msg regarding Overheating and dimmed its light considerably. I disconnected and let it cool for half an hour but it dimmed its light again after a few seconds. This has happened 2-3 times already. My question is if its fried or will the projector be ok after some more time?
@@jitender5731 Hmm... Sorry to hear the issue. I need more info. 1. Did you block projector bottom part (air inlet and outlet)? 2. What is your room temp? 3. Is the projector fan working?
@@jayceooi I put it on a flat table. Didn't realize it will heat up after about an hour of use. Its very hot in Delhi, India and will still get hotter going forward. Outside temp is ard 113 F. Inside will be close to 98-100. Wasn't using the air-conditioning at that time. So I hard reset it (using only remote) and raised it to 4-5 inches before using it again with AC on. Its working fine now. Thanks for the help. Hopefully wont need to bother you for this again 🙂
Do you mean after installing ProjectivyLauncher? I cant find it either in ProjectivyLauncher... Only Image setting; like the colors.. there is standard, movie, game etc. but I dont think that adjusts the input lag

You are most welcome, Papo. I prefer DLP projector. Better than 1LCD in overall. Once calibrated correctly, you won't able to see pixel on S5. Just the image will be softer than native 1080p.
You mentioned based on your calculations, its 573 ANSI Lumen vs advertised 1100 ANSI Lumens, is that correct? I am trying to upgrade the very old projector we have HTP DLP-600W and trying to find a projector that fit on our wall mount (camera mount) and wondering if S5 will be a good option?

Hi @jayceooi Thanks to your review of the S5 I decided to get one for myself. I'm now trying to calibrate the projector on my white wall. I watched your calibration video but in your case you can change the settings while having the video on display. How do you achieve this in the S5? for the S5, i need to go to the menu and change settings in the image section. Hey Jayce, I followed your advice and bought a new Formovie S5 :) I am a little bit confused with some things and hope that you can help? :) *1 - How or where can i downloade 3rd party apps, and where did you get your system launcher "Project Ivy Launcher" from? *2 - I dowloaded the newest system update by accident, do you know if i can get the old version back again? *3 - There is a bit of sound lag when i pair the projector with the soundbar through Bluetooth? I have a xiaomi mi 4K tv stick connected to the projector threw HDMI cabel! I will be very gratefull if you could help answering those questions
1. Follow your Nothing Projector guide to install Projectivy Launcher. Install app store from it then. 2. Can't downgrade. 3. Lag on Bluetooth is normal. Latency depends on your Bluetooth speakers.

I saw this clock, but this larger clock in particular is the Kodi clock I think, I am referring to the smaller one that appears with the wi-fi signal next to it, but apparently when the video is played on Kodi it is not shown, which it is good : th-cam.com/video/wSrx1EJZW9U/w-d-xo.html That smaller clock is a constant complaint from users of this and other FengOS projectors on Aliexpress. @@ottoAJ Yes, I know the clock you mentioned in the first question. Same answer = it will shows on certain apps. Not in Kodi, TH-cam and so on... That's the apps issue for not using full screen function properly...
why almost all the first top projectors from your chart have low contrast ratio below 400:1? (s5 being a bit higher) isn't contrast important? or color gamut and ansi lumens matters more?

There is a £250 difference in my market but the halo plus does come with a 5 year guarantee. I noticed that for movie has the lesser 0.23 chip. I am many going to be using it to watch movies and play games, what would you decide to go for in my position?

Just bought one of these based on your review and it's pretty amazing, especially for the price. I did want to ask if you knew of anyway to get rid of the sharpening filter when using "game mode" or any of the other modes besides "custom", as the sharpening filter is just way too high. T.T
@@jayceooi Thanks for the quick reply mate. Yeah, I didn't have any sort of issues like that with the two Wanbos I tried out (had plenty of other issues with them though Ha!) Dang, that's such an odd choice of them to make isn't it? And if what you're saying is true, I really think reviewers need to start calling it out and not just accept it as the norm, seriously this could be a real deal breaker for those who care about image quality like myself, especially with the game mode being locked up with that awful sharpening filter, at the very least it would let the companies know their odd design choices are not appreciated and if they're choosing to lock options from the user, then at the very least don't force image destructive settings on them. It'd be like having MEMC on by default and giving the user no way to turn it off, truly bizarre. I actually had a friend who's super casual and in no way a videophile like myself come over and check it out and even she was put off by the jacked up sharpening filter. Anyhoo, I'm hopeful that with enough noise they'll do the right thing and release an update patch to resolve the issue, but of course I'm not gonna hold my breath for that lol. Having said all that, I do love the projector, which is why I'm fussing, as I feel it's so close to being perfect for the price bracket that it's in. ^^

Yes, depending on the video bit rates. High bit rate 4K videos are better than low bit rate 1080P videos. But if the 1080P videos have very high bit rate, you won't notice at all.

Hi, Wemax Go Advanced Pro has forced edge enhancement when using USER settings unless you choose Display Mode. They both have the same software. Is this projector behaving the same? I'm not using the stock software. I'm using the HDMI for my Apple TV.

what's the best video player with harware acceleration that can show subtitles for Formovie S5? Formovie player doesn't hold audio and video in sync, MXplayer always switch video into portrait mode, Oplayer won't show subtitles when HW acceleration is enabled and without HWa video is jerky.

Hi! I have a question about which sub $900 portable projector to get. I am mainly using it for connecting it to my m1 mac pro via hdmi (which is 2.0) to watch 1080p movies in a dark room at home on a tripod(ranging 80" to 100" inch screen where it feels comfortable to move around for my cream white walls in my room), and I am considering the nebula 2 pro and the halo+. I want to have good image quality with good color accuracy and distinguishable blacks. I do like the Nebula Capsule 3 for that last point of good blacks in the image with laser projection (with the cost of color accuracy I believe, if there are any laser projectors that have good color accuracy also let me know), but I am not sure if its a deal breaker. Maybe I will consider this projector in the video but I wanted your thoughts on which projector would be good for watching movies with the qualities I mainly wanted since they are all on sale right now on amazon/xgimi website. @@jayceooi Such powerbanks has weight about 1.5kg. And everything above 27000mah (actually 100W*h) forbidden to bring to an aeroplane. So has to note that "mobility" of this projector is conditional :)

How do you get to the menu @15:14? I just got my S5 today. Installed ProjetivyLauncher and set to default launcher, but I find it super confusing. There is no Fengmi settings anymore.. Where do I find keystone correction? Where do I find how to enable game mode?
@@jayceooi Mine doe not look like that when I press the menu button. I did however find the game mode in the image settings and it seems to work.. not sure what the delay is in ms tho. But it feels alright. I have another problem tho. when the image is dark, its super grainy, and looks like the dark pixels are moving, like ants.. is this normal??
Hello Jayce, I bought an S5 and I really liked. I haven't tested it enough yet but one thing that I found strange is the pixels because of the dmd chip, didn't that bother you? I'm watching it on a 100" screen from a distance of 280cm and I'm still able to see it =(
Excellent video and channel, Jayce. I want to buy this projector but some clips I saw of it on Laurent’s website, playing the Batman trailer, really shocked me with the poor detail in the dark scenes. I felt that I would be better off watching such a film on my old iPad. However, his clip of the same trailer on the Halo+ showed adequate details. Is there really such a gap between these two projectors? With all your experience, would you agree that this projector is useless for films like Batman, or am I overreacting? I won’t have the projector in my hands till October because the Indian government won’t let us directly import electronics from China and the local distributor’s prices are atrocious. We will try to get it when we go to Europe in October. In the meanwhile I might buy a cheaper model to play with, maybe the Goodee YG600 Plus, since your recommended Xidu has also not made it here.
I will have to order the S5 to Europe and bring it back in luggage to India. Same goes for Halo+ since they are both around $1000 USD in India. If you had to pick one projector to watch a really dark movie in, or play a dark game and be able to see everything, which would be the cheapest? Thank you
hey jayce, first i want to thank you for your excellent review! i also got the formovie s5, and im quite impressed, especially the performance/price, but i have a problem with native kodi. i installed the latest kodi over the aptoidetv store. it start fine, but as soon as i reach the ADDON section in kodi it crashes to the main page. Can you please help me which version of project launcher and which version of kodi you are using? Thank you.

Thanks so much for this great in depth review. I have a few questions: 1. I have heard that when playing games on the S5 we need to turn off auto keystone to get the best possible input delay and also project the image straight to the wall. My question is this: When gaming can we still place the projector at an angle and project the image to the wall at an angle and just manually change the keystone and still get the best input delay?. 2. Did you turn off auto keystone when testing the input delay in game mode when you got 35ms?. 3.Have you tried everything you can to get the input delay as low as possible?. Turning off all picture enhancement, auto Keystone correction and having it on game mode? 3:18 Can you please share pictures of the "Nothing projector" how turn it into English Ui guide. received this projector.good. But I saw a big problem. Like full dots when watching movies and photos through pen drive. I don't know how to say it correctly. Looks like pixels. The face is not smooth at all. So I watched the movie again on my old projector. I watch 90% movies from pendrive and hard disk. I have no use for this projector. Will you give it a try?
Settings doesn't seem to be the problem. should also look through android box. If this is also the case, cash will go. On my old projector, when I connect via android box, the videos are the same. but It looks good through pendrive and hard disk. Low quality even through s5 pendrive
The app that was in it when I bought it. It can't be wrong. Because my previous projector is toyinger G3 model. Same is the case when watching videos and photos through android box. It is used by vlc player

Dice and Mi have 0.33" DMD. XPR tech as well. All of them output 1080p but Dice and Mi are slightly sharper.

I have the S5 and I am very happy. The only problem I have is I wish it had better contrast. I have it with a white screen (Venor 100" PVC Screen).

Screen won't change the projector contrast ratio much. You need to change to another projector in order to get higher contrast ratio.

Thanks for the review Jayce!! My sitting/viewing distance from projection screen is ard. 12 ft and projection screen is 7.5 x 5 ft. This will produce an 100 inch screen (16:9). I can place the projector by the side wall ard. 7-8 ft away from the screen. The room has curtains but natural light is there if a projector is used in daytime. Although Dangbei Atom is brighter and shows more detail but I like Formovie S5 better for its natural colours and sound. My dilemma is how will the picture from both (Atom & S5) look from a 12 ft viewing distance? Should I get S5 or Atom? Thanks in advance 🙂

@@jayceooi Hi Jayce. I bought the S5 using your link above and got the projector today in India. Was able to load Projectivy and got some of your settings in as well. But after a couple of hours it showed a msg regarding Overheating and dimmed its light considerably. I disconnected and let it cool for half an hour but it dimmed its light again after a few seconds. This has happened 2-3 times already. My question is if its fried or will the projector be ok after some more time?

@@jayceooi I put it on a flat table. Didn't realize it will heat up after about an hour of use. Its very hot in Delhi, India and will still get hotter going forward. Outside temp is ard 113 F. Inside will be close to 98-100. Wasn't using the air-conditioning at that time. So I hard reset it (using only remote) and raised it to 4-5 inches before using it again with AC on. Its working fine now. Thanks for the help. Hopefully wont need to bother you for this again 🙂

Iam planning buying my first projector, a portable one and could you please help let me know which is better, a Formovie S5 or Halo plus. I see the Light technology on these models are entirely different (LED on Halo+ vs laser on S5) and the lumens on Halo is 900 Lumens vs 1100 lumens on Formovie (not sure if its 1100 at all times). You are most welcome, Papo. I prefer DLP projector. Better than 1LCD in overall. Once calibrated correctly, you won't able to see pixel on S5. Just the image will be softer than native 1080p.

I watched your calibration video but in your case you can change the settings while having the video on display. How do you achieve this in the S5? for the S5, i need to go to the menu and change settings in the image section. Is there a way to open the image menu while watching a video so i can see immediate impact of the settings i'm changing? Appreciate any help you can provide :)

*1 - How or where can i downloade 3rd party apps, and where did you get your system launcher "Project Ivy Launcher" from?

1. Follow your Nothing Projector guide to install Projectivy Launcher. Install app store from it then.
2. Can't downgrade.
3. Lag on Bluetooth is normal. Latency depends on your Bluetooth speakers.

why almost all the first top projectors from your chart have low contrast ratio below 400:1? (s5 being a bit higher) isn't contrast important? or color gamut and ansi lumens matters more?

Hi Jayce, I really like your review style :) it's funny but informative. I am trying to decide between the halo plus and the formovie s5. There is a £250 difference in my market but the halo plus does come with a 5 year guarantee. I noticed that for movie has the lesser 0.23 chip. I am many going to be using it to watch movies and play games, what would you decide to go for in my position?

Just bought one of these based on your review and it's pretty amazing, especially for the price. I did want to ask if you knew of anyway to get rid of the sharpening filter when using "game mode" or any of the other modes besides "custom", as the sharpening filter is just way too high. T.T

Dang, that's such an odd choice of them to make isn't it? And if what you're saying is true, I really think reviewers need to start calling it out and not just accept it as the norm, seriously this could be a real deal breaker for those who care about image quality like myself, especially with the game mode being locked up with that awful sharpening filter, at the very least it would let the companies know their odd design choices are not appreciated and if they're choosing to lock options from the user, then at the very least don't force image destructive settings on them. It'd be like having MEMC on by default and giving the user no way to turn it off, truly bizarre.
I actually had a friend who's super casual and in no way a videophile like myself come over and check it out and even she was put off by the jacked up sharpening filter. Anyhoo, I'm hopeful that with enough noise they'll do the right thing and release an update patch to resolve the issue, but of course I'm not gonna hold my breath for that lol. Having said all that, I do love the projector, which is why I'm fussing, as I feel it's so close to being perfect for the price bracket that it's in. ^^

Yes, depending on the video bit rates. High bit rate 4K videos are better than low bit rate 1080P videos. But if the 1080P videos have very high bit rate, you won't notice at all.

All depend on your needs and budget. FYI, you need a quality 100% even screen for UST. And none of them can output 120Hz. 60Hz max.

Hi, Wemax Go Advanced Pro has forced edge enhancement when using USER settings unless you choose Display Mode. They both have the same software. Is this projector behaving the same? I'm not using the stock software. I'm using the HDMI for my Apple TV.

what's the best video player with harware acceleration that can show subtitles for Formovie S5? Formovie player doesn't hold audio and video in sync, MXplayer always switch video into portrait mode, Oplayer won't show subtitles when HW acceleration is enabled and without HWa video is jerky.

Correct. T6 Max has 246 ANSI Lumens out of proclaimed 650 (based on Wanbo India). This is what we call 'marketing'. 😅

Hi! I have a question about which sub $900 portable projector to get. I am mainly using it for connecting it to my m1 mac pro via hdmi (which is 2.0) to watch 1080p movies in a dark room at home on a tripod(ranging 80" to 100" inch screen where it feels comfortable to move around for my cream white walls in my room), and I am considering the nebula 2 pro and the halo+. I want to have good image quality with good color accuracy and distinguishable blacks. I do like the Nebula Capsule 3 for that last point of good blacks in the image with laser projection (with the cost of color accuracy I believe, if there are any laser projectors that have good color accuracy also let me know), but I am not sure if its a deal breaker. Maybe I will consider this projector in the video but I wanted your thoughts on which projector would be good for watching movies with the qualities I mainly wanted since they are all on sale right now on amazon/xgimi website. How do you get to the menu @15:14? I just got my S5 today. Installed ProjetivyLauncher and set to default launcher, but I find it super confusing. There is no Fengmi settings anymore.. Where do I find keystone correction? Where do I find how to enable game mode?

I have another problem tho. when the image is dark, its super grainy, and looks like the dark pixels are moving, like ants.. is this normal??
@@marxthe.2651 Normal for DLP projectors. Do reduce sharpness level. S5 default value is way over.
Hello Jayce, I bought an S5 and I really liked. I haven't tested it enough yet but one thing that I found strange is the pixels because of the dmd chip, didn't that bother you? I'm watching it on a 100" screen from a distance of 280cm and I'm still able to see it =(

Excellent video and channel, Jayce. I want to buy this projector but some clips I saw of it on Laurent’s website, playing the Batman trailer, really shocked me with the poor detail in the dark scenes. I felt that I would be better off watching such a film on my old iPad. However, his clip of the same trailer on the Halo+ showed adequate details. Is there really such a gap between these two projectors? With all your experience, would you agree that this projector is useless for films like Batman, or am I overreacting? Many thanks, you’ve earned a subscriber and I am watching more of your past videos as well.

I won’t have the projector in my hands till October because the Indian government won’t let us directly import electronics from China and the local distributor’s prices are atrocious. We will try to get it when we go to Europe in October. In the meanwhile I might buy a cheaper model to play with, maybe the Goodee YG600 Plus, since your recommended Xidu has also not made it here.

I will have to order the S5 to Europe and bring it back in luggage to India. Same goes for Halo+ since they are both around $1000 USD in India. If you had to pick one projector to watch a really dark movie in, or play a dark game and be able to see everything, which would be the cheapest? Thank you

i also got the formovie s5, and im quite impressed, especially the performance/price, but i have a problem with native kodi. i installed the latest kodi over the aptoidetv store. it start fine, but as soon as i reach the ADDON section in kodi it crashes to the main page.
Can you please help me which version of project launcher and which version of kodi you are using?

1. I have heard that when playing games on the S5 we need to turn off auto keystone to get the best possible input delay and also project the image straight to the wall.
My question is this: When gaming can we still place the projector at an angle and project the image to the wall at an angle and just manually change the keystone and still get the best input delay?.
2. Did you turn off auto keystone when testing the input delay in game mode when you got 35ms?.
3.Have you tried everything you can to get the input delay as low as possible?. Turning off all picture enhancement, auto Keystone correction and having it on game mode?

I just bought this projector. I think its good overall however it kind of struggles in dark scenes. The blacks are too bright.
