Delroy you're a legend I love the way you speak to the customers. So important to set customer expectations and speak clearly and its something a lot of electricians struggle with.
That lady has a very nice voice. I could listen to her all day. (It a compliment). I am hearing impaired so some voices are easier to listen to and understand than others.
As a 22 year old recently qualified electrician who has only just started getting sent on his own jobs - it’s great to have videos like this where I can learn how to deal with customers as this is half the battle in my opinion and something I’ve always struggled with
Hello, the original installation was probably done around 50 years ago. Modern uk homes being built 'today' are rarely future-proofed, that means that most improvements that need additional cables have new cables run on the surface, the alternative is to chisel plaster off walls, and/or cut and lift existing wooden floorboarding.
Just watching you, artisan, nick bundy and residual current iv learned loads and also makes me excited to get out there on the tools. Been fitting smart meters for 8 years so same repetitive work. I’m bored out my head need something to challenge me again
Hope you achieve your ambition. Nightschool classes at the local technical college or one day a week courses may be helpful to you. Unfortunately the cost of courses has risen dramatically over the last few decades. ? Would your employer allow you one day off per week to attend college, most likely a day unpaid ? . ? Are government-backed career development Loans available ? As far back as 1965 professors were talking about 'multiple careers' for the same person, and also expecting 'lifelong learning'.
Taking the back box out would damage the surrounding plaster and wallpaper/paint , also maybe the customer didn’t want the extra cost or damage. A small bead of caulking would seal the gap on the plastic box.
In an old building like that, "level" is relative to the surroundings. However, one of these days you will work in a a place where that little level will ruin your day due to lack of accuracy. I've had that bite me real good a few times, therefore the smallest level I own is 6 inches.
I just put a coverplate on today and I leveled it out but looked at the top and bottom and saw that one side was closer to the edge of the wall than the other. I threw my level on the wall and the bubble was almost out of the middle. Crazy place with drywalls lines all over so not the best craftsmanship I'd say.
@@xylexut2589 I've had a similar experience hanging a large TV over a fireplace mantel in a 100 year old house. The mantel was out of level...as was the ceiling in the opposite direction. It was impossible scenario...it would never look correct. The homeowner and myself ultimately agreed to put it on the same angle as the mantel.

That's an old infra red beam that once had a small mirror opposite which reflected the invisible beam back. When someone walked through the beam the reflection was broken and ding a ling time.
3:09 You have an uneven surface so you can't mount the receptacle flush to the wall .... just use a thin coat of spackle/joint compound to fill it in (very easy).
I think it'd take a fair amount of spackle to fill that in enough to keep the box flat. I doubt he's got that on him or the time to let it dry and then do the work but in the USA, I sometimes seal things with caulk or silicone. So in short, he could've mounted it then caulked the gap around it and smoothed it out so it looks nice but I'd only do that if I knew they weren't going to need it taken off for a while.

I'm curious - it looks like the studs are closer together around electrical outlets in UK? In the US, we have a different standard and pretty much all of our (non low-voltage) electronics only need to be on one side of a stud. So I'm curious about the difference.
In most UK properties over 50 years old (which is over half in many areas) all walls are brick, both external and internal. Newer properties tend to be aerated concrete block load-bearing walls (with a single layer of brick on the exterior face) with studs and plasterboard/drywall on the inside. Non load-bearing internal walls tend to be standard 4x2 studs. Stud walls are faster and cheaper to put up and make retrofit electrical work a damn sight easier, but they have a host of other issues. IIRC the UK stud distance standard is 400mm, which is about 16" but noggins (horizontal lengths of timber between studs) are more common than they appear in the US, which means we rely less on boarding to prevent racking. Extra noggins tend to be put in where heavy loads and electrical fittings are expected to be installed.
@@lordsummerisle87 what's really annoying is when someone sticks at noggin at the perfect height for all of our sockets (or more frequently, switches). It results in the noggin generally having to be moved up or down a few cm so there's enough room for the boxes.
Sparky, I truly enjoy your videos- Regards from Germany ;) I wonder why you always twist your wires before using a Wago or any screw type connector- I'd suggest leaving them straight (Wago demands to do so anyways) or using cable ferrules for a safer connection. Anyways- thats the only little bit from my work experience- keep going young man!!
Twisting small strands together stops them splaying apart, thus ensuring all strands enter the connector. ? Do you mean need a ferrule where with a flat end enters the connector ? Following manufacturers instructions, yes - ? but how does a twisted multistranded conductor differ from a circular single solid conductor? Not all crimped terminations are top quality - I'd like to see the results of Wago's lab tests. Good to discuss options.

Ferrules (Check en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_wire_ferrule ) are mandatory in most countries I work, Eg. Germany, England, Most part of Europe and Asia. As for Wago- They just demand to not twist it- though I find it easier to insert.
You need professionals for professional jobs, but at the same time, most householders haven't got even a basic clue about the workings of their properties.

That's called TBOE. Top bottom opposite end it was more efficient than the normal way back in the day with low pressure systems . You see it more on commercial installs with iron pipework and long rads
My sister just brought a brand new flat an fall the TRVs are up top, think it’s better for smart TRVs too as they get a better idea of room temperature and easier to adjust
Looked like a steel conduit and box, they can be a pig to remove without wall damage and It looks like the only earth was the conduit so a new box would have to be fixed to that, I can see why they fitted a double 'converta' socket last time, just not very well. It was always going to be a pain if the existing single box protruded.
@@themunchkinbear exactly my point, you can't so you wouldn't. I think the main issue was that the box was protruding coz the conduits were not set deep enough. There is also a cost factor on labour and probably other issues we don't know about. We all have better ways of doing jobs, but our methods may not always be practical
In my opinion there are very few very simple jobs, e.g disturbing a box often causes a small amount of plaster to fall downward behind wallpaper, difficult to get dust and small sharp plaster bits uphill and out from behind the edge of wallpaper even using a vacuum cleaner. Unfortunately solving one problem can create additional problems.
To get them into same color and in sense it does give it protective layer so condensation on the pipes is not in constant contact with the copper piping that then corrodes... but then again one nick on the surface to punch the paint and corrosion starts to spread under that paint nicely out of sight.. Not that its terrible issue really, but over time it can become one. Real thing i dont get it... or i do but still, people painting their radiators... with interior paint. It becomes insulating layer and limits heating capability of radiator. One should only use suitable thermal transfer paint designed to water heating systems. Then again people are idiots and most dont even know about this issue so go figure people use wrong paint.

I always forget my flashlights but I always have a small drill so sometimes i just hold the trigger down a little bit and use it as a light.

Looks like a fluke t6 1000 I've got one but only use it as a tong tester for measuring amperage on cables single cores on armoured cables etc
