I enjoyed playing on PIxelborn, so I'm sad about the news. Having said that, I understand Disney's stance and I wonder if it was because cash tournaments were being held and they wanted to make their own online client game. It seems the Lorcana tournaments did not want cash as prizes so they gave out cards, playmats, etc. Of course, those can be flipped for money but it's not totally black and white. Pixelborn did offer players opportunities to play the game especially when the supply of cards was low so it definitely helped grow the game

Absolutely it was. When it was just testing and playing matches - fine. When you and others start profiting off of an IP that you don’t own - you’re gonna get shut down.

I agree the main reason I am upset about pixel being taken down is im a parent to two kids and a husband. I love this game but I play it for the competitive nature. Without pixel I will definitely become a worse player. Pixel helped me so much because I have to drive at minimum an hour to play a locals. So this going away definitely takes away my ability to practice as much. And most people the more they practice the better they get. This is coming from someone that owns a playset of every card.

as much as I am sad by this news, I want to point out that the Digimon card game has had a client before it got shutdown by Bandai due to similar reasons, and it was when the reboot was growing and had problems at the start, but afterwards, it got stabilized and is successful and still is to this day. Right now, there's a new client that hasn't been taken down yet, but so far, it's relatively well received, but before it appeared, Digimon card game has been growing and has been fine for a while and the IP isn't as big as Disney.
Will the same happen to Lorcana? Probably, but we have seen before just because your brand is by a big known IP or company doesn't always mean it will last forever, but we will see.

Digimon, Pokemon, magic, one piece, flesh and blood. Everybody keeps pointing to ccgs that exist like they're in a comparable situation to lorcana. You know that they don't have that lorcana does? An extremely expensive IP license they have to continue to pay for. They can't just get by on a niche community and some Disney adults buying enchanteds. They need the game to be fairly popular in order to survive. If you don't think that's true go count up the amount of dead star wars tcgs over the last 20 years.

      @mynameisgrundle8157 หลายเดือนก่อน

While this may seem like a logical certainly it's far from a given. RB can't just go "oh people want a digital client? No problem!" When it comes to game licenses it's almost always tied to a medium. So RB having the rights to the Disney IP for a physical card game definitely does NOT mean they have the license to do a digital game currently. That would require time for negotiations and RB to be so interested in doing a digital client that they're willing to go on the hook for a second expensive license. They might but it's not a "just a matter of time" situation. Till they actually come out and say they're working on one I wouldn't just assume that they are

I don't think that RB has a digital client anywhere near completion. My guess is that they've barely started it, if at all. But i feel that this decision did not come from RB (from the sound of it) but rather Disney's lawyers who don't understand the game or community and are solely concerned about protecting Disney's IP
Other, less sophisticated clients for Lorcana already exist and I'm sure the players will find a way to play online, but it's a shame that all of the hard work Pavel did to program all of the games rules and interactions will just be thrown away.

@stefan7848 when 99% of TCGs stop the cards go sealed items go to surplus stores selling whole boxes under 50 or even less. Sealed product only goes up when it literally doesn't exist online in these surplus stores. Then when ypu only see 1-3 eBay listings a year that's when it becomes a game of when someone is nostalgic enough to pay inflated prices. As for cards almost all will be worthless except actual rare stuff like top end tornament prizes who will drop value but retain some at least. But depends on the fan base and time.
For example the .hack TCG has a fanbase willing to spend hundreds on one of the sets that is rare now and even hundreds on the rare cards in it to complete personal collections but this was a lower printed and more niche series from the early 00s I think lorcana has too much printing even with a dedicated fan base that and disney makes so much product people will forget it.

I don't understand why this is such a big deal. People need to understand that an IP (ANY IP) can easily be copied by ANYONE in the world who is ambitious and determined enough to take something that exists (THAT THEY DID NOT PERSONALLY CREATE THEMSELVES) physically and replicate it digitally for anyone to access for free online.
I mean... you could even just think about things like "free" (user/fan created) manga viewing sites for example, similar concept.
Do you see the problem with this?
Clearly it presents a situation where, if done enough times (like multiple competitors trying to create different versions of a copied IP), it can render official physical products irrelevant to a large number of WOULD-BE customers.
For example, why would I EVER buy a Lorcana card physically if a digital copy of the entire game exists online?
I understand people who are saying that there's easier access to the game by it being in a digital form (and for free), but that digital form isn't officially sanctioned by Disney. I doubt the creator even had direct permission from Disney themselves to even build it.
This would be a completely different story IF it was done with the IP owner's direct permission because THEY own and reserve the rights to dictate how they want the IP to be distributed.
Of course they are well aware that less people would feel the need to buy actual cards if they can just play the copied digital version of the full game, but that should be THEIR (IP owner's) decision to decide, not some random developer who has no official association/affiliation with Disney. Doesn't matter if they are a fan of the game or not.
Bottomline is, people are missing the point.
Disney are within their right to shut it down. Doesn't matter if people like that decision or not. If Disney want to make their own client for the game or contract some other developer to do so, that is THEIR decision, not anyone else's. Anyone else who proactively jumps the gun and tries to do it "for them" (as was the case with Pixelborn) will RISK the same fate.
You can try to defend or make as many excuses for Pixelborn all you want, but the inevitable truth is, delusion will never win against reality.
People need to wake up and understand business and law FIRST, then they should reevaluate their feelings on this situation.
Also, Lorcana is one of the more affordable card games in the current market. Unlike One Piece, most of these cards are very much accessible without you having to go into crippling debt.
People need to stop being babies.

People who are disabled, chronically ill, people who don't have time to travel to LGS, people living in countries where Lorcana is not yet being physically distributed etc.
Why should Disney care about those people (aside from like, actually having empathy towards other humans?) These people are still potential or existing customers. Even if someone is physically unable to leave the house to compete in local events or tournaments, that person still might want to buy boosters to have a collection for fun! Or they might want to buy the Ursula game to play with their kid or whatever, or buy official playmats to play with at home. Or if they live somewhere it isn't being distributed yet, they might still travel to go to big Challenge events to participate, and if the game does become available in their country later on well they're already a customer ready and waiting to buy the product.
If you look at games like DnD, they thrive off of the community and how accessible they are. You can literally get a bunch of people into dnd for free, and once those people are interested and invested in the game they then might go and buy figures, books etc. Pixelborn was doing the same for Lorcana allowing people to get into the game in an accessible way and removing that with no alternative at all is really upsetting for many people. It was basically free advertising for Lorcana.
Of course Disney can do what they like with their IP, but leaving fans with no alternative means of playing digitally is a move that leaves a large portion of the community feeling excluded and now unable to join in on the game we all love, and when TCGs are something that live and die by the community around them we need as many people to be interested and love the game as much as we do!
If Disney had asked PB to be taken down but had also announced their official client alongside it, there would still be a lot of people upset but I think it wouldn't have had as much of a negative reaction as it has had.

You sound like a relatively new player. No one is saying that anything is wrong with them wanting to make decisions for their IP and how it is distributed. I think the issue people are having is just that EVEN AS A IP OWNER, this isn’t the right move for them. Pixelborn is the sole reason this game has done as well as it has. Instead of taking it down, offer this young man a deal and work with him. He LITERALLY did all the work for an online client for them. 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️

Man you dropped a long wall of text to completely misunderstand entire conversation.
Like NOBODY is arguing that this was even a surprise, let alone that Disney didn't have a right to do this. The point (that you seem to have missed) is that it sucks for the players and is going to hurt the game. The only surprise I hear about this is that the timing didn't include an announcement from RB that they have a replacement in the works.

As someone who is super new to Lorcana, pixelborn was a great way for me to get firsthand experience with the game without feeling like I'm burdening others with teaching me to play.

LGS's exist and are the life blood of TCGs casually or competitively. People acting like their are ZERO options don't want to leave the house or understand proxy testing at LGS's. Probably people who never played TCGs before if you honestly think you have to buy every card to test lol.
Saw people arguing that without pixelborn they wouldn't have bought singles to go compete in tournaments but those users are the exact demo that gave a almost net zero contribution to Lorcana. Playing pixelborn does not support lorcana financially at all. Buying singles does not support lorcana. If anything Pixelborn was a financial loss if you have enough players like this who buy singles for deckbuilding but not packs for testing/brewing.
As for arguing that TCGs all have digital clients is false. Pokemon only in the past few years got a modern Sim. Magic got a modern Sim a bit earlier but still only a few years old. Yugioh literally just got its first true Sim less than 2/3 years ago. Other TCGs like OP, Digimon, Flesh and Blood, Weiss ect have no online client but have been successful for years and blown up.
This video is abit of drama bait and outrage vs looking at the actual facts of TCGs and the fact that this was a ILLEGAL client and was bound to be taken down at any time. Acting shocked is hilarious.

Not everyone has the means or live in areas where locals are nonexistent or not as popular. There’s many factors that come in. Not a single one of those clients you mentioned ever offered the entire card collection for free either. There’s many variables to this. This video isn’t baiting anyone.

Dude, I have been playing tcgs on and off since magic 3rd edition. LGS proxy testing is not very accessible for most players. This will definitely make sponsored teams much better than amateurs like myself.

@KeyOfGeorge Offering the cards for free is literally losing money even if Lorcana makes a client it will cost money in some form or time via grinding free packs. No client exists for free because it makes no sense as it just costs the company money for a zero to miniscule net gain.
This is a game that exists to make money and exists because it makes money. Once it stops or slows down if people choose "free" options vs buying packs then you will no longer have Lorcana in ANY form.

Buying singles drives the price of cards up, which in turn increases the expected value of sealed product, driving more sales of seal product.

The only reason I play Lorcana and spent a lot of hard earned money on the first four sets is because of Pixelborn. There's no LGS close enough for me to go regurlaly... If there's no online client to play, I don't know if I'll be able to stay involved... The game is great, but I need to be able to play it at home when I have the time, otherwise. People have life, streamers gave amazing content to the community. What now ?
