I usually just make balls out of my supported singles and then ply them together. I also have one of Spindeleien's travel spindles and it's so convenient and a lovely spindle on its own even without the handy collapsible shaft. I also have a teeny tiny crossarm spindle, it weights less than 8 grams and I keep it in a small cookie tin where most of the space is taken up by fiber.
