    Norman Dike is portrayed as a complete coward, with his cowardice even causing several men from E-company to be killed or wounded during the attack on Foy. In real life, while probably not the most skilled leader and certainly not popular among the men, Dike was certainly not cowardly. He received two medals for valor in combat, one of which for rescuing wounded men while bullets were flying all around him, and the real reason why he froze up outside Foy was that he had been shot and was in shock.

      I wonder how many men were there when "he" rescued those men. The captain of a company gets credit for what his men did. Anyway, I believe the men of Easy company - there were dozens of them - about Dike's ability as a leader. (I'm former enlisted, and believe me, the non-officers know who are good leaders, and who are bad leaders, much better than the upper officers know.)

    My grandfather was in WWII and spent the winter of '44 in Northern France, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium and Holland. The winter was harsh and the cold intense, with temperatures sometimes below -18 Celsius at night. When he came home he told my grandmother he never wanted to be that cold again and they moved to Texas.

      My grandfather was in those same countries with the 35th Infantry Division. He ended up staying in the Army after the war, going to Korea too. He retired in 1961. He must not have been too sick of the cold, even after the Ardennes, and Korea in winter. He ended up moving to Wyoming which has pretty lousy winters.

    So a little info about how medical treatment works on the battlefield. You have different types of medics. Combat life savers are soldiers who have been trained in first aid, similar to emts in the civilian world, combat medics are on the frontlines and try to stabilize the patent, similar to a paramedic, medevac helicopters are basically the same in civilian world, going into an area to pickup the world. And lastly field hospitals are similar to a trauma ER headed by a field surgeon. After that the wounded are sent to a actual hospital somewhere in friendly lands.

    America's contribution against Germany was mostly material...both supplying it and blowing it up. If America was not in the war, the Allies would have been in a very bad position with regards to oil. Oil was the key commodity of the war...the fact that the Allies had it and Germany and Japan did not gave the Allies many gigantic advantages over the Axis.
    Out of a total of 7 billion barrels of oil used by all the Allies from December 1941 to September 1945, 6 billion of those barrels came from the United States.

      I have visited some of them myself. I am sorry if I came off as dismissing any of the sacrifices made by American servicemen. My point was only to note how critical oil was to the Allies, and thus how indispensable the USA being in the war was for the Allies. To think that Russia would have rolled back the German advances without American diesel to fuel their tanks and planes is pretty wrong. Even if the Soviets were willing to sacrifice double the casualties they did, without US oil in the war, the USSR probably never beats Germany.

    I think the fact that you didn't feel this was as brutal is really valid. By this point in the war, this episode wanted to showcase how bad the mental effects were. Since Physical damage or wounds are very clearly and painfully obvious, not a lot of audiences are ready for that. So, portraying mental trauma or showing PTSD symptoms in film just really goes to show how dedicated the actors were. Because we might not actually experience what they went through in history but these episodes and films give us an idea and that's mostly what they try to go for. Just a depiction so that we can try to understand.

Britain and British Commonwealth forces couldn't have invaded Europe without the Americans as well, but don't think for a minute they won in the West on their own - they didn't.

    Lugers, those German pistols, were, especially later in the war, notoriously temperamental. The soldier who got one, stuck it in his belt and it went off. There’s a horrible scene in ‘Schindler’s List,’ where a Nazi intends to shoot a Jewish prisoner with a Luger and he CAN’T get the pistol to fire. That prisoner actually survived the war. Maybe in those two scenes there’s some sort of karma-equivalence, if you believe in that sort of thing

    • @MrSmithla
      @MrSmithla 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On Luger’s unreliability, it was common later in the war that production shortcuts, variability in production materials and even active sabotage by slave-labor meant that the losing side’s equipment was often defective. I read that Jewish slave labor knew that dumping a handful of metal shavings into, for instance, Panther tanks would utterly destroy the tank’s entire drive-train. I’ve always marveled at that. An enormous tank, powerful gun, thick armor designed to lead attacks could be completely incapacitated by a handful of metal shavings from the shop floor.

    • @MrSmithla
      @MrSmithla 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even the gasoline that both sides used was different. The Germans were almost always short of gasoline as a nation. The octane rating of the German gas was, I believe, lower. Either way, they diluted their gas because they didn’t have as much. You’ve seen that basic US Army car, the Jeep. Of course the Germans captured some Jeeps and drove them. The German assessment was they were good vehicles but they didn’t like what low gas mileage they got. Americans never complained about the Jeep’s low gas mileage because the Americans always had so much gas. It was a vehicle designed for the American way of war, with the expectation of lots of gas available.

    Capturing a German Luger was a very dangerous thing because if the Germans saw a prisoner carrying one, they'd immediately execute them

    Ultimately, Germany was doomed to defeat. Any strategic changes they may have made in hindsight ultimately wouldn't have prevented their defeat. Perhaps the only thing that could have was to have come up with the a-bomb on their own in 1941 or 1942. I don't think their scientific efforts in that direction were as serious as the allies though. The Germans just didn't have the population, raw materials, or production capacity to take on the rest of the world. Even allied with Japan and Italy and occupying much of Europe, it just wasn't enough to offset what Russia could provide in manpower and the USA could provide in production capacity.

    You may want to read more on ww2 as the usa didn't just send troops we supplied russia the uk and others for the war. If the usa didn't help no way could russia and the uk survive. The usa was feeding and sending food,Trucks, Tanks, planes ammo you name it. I know people love trashing americans yet the US tax payers have done a great deal for europe in more than one world war. The first battle the uk won in africa was with 300 us made tanks and weapons and ammo so if you take a look into the facts we heled all along one one way or another.
