  • Here's some undated, color 8mm footage of a cruise aboard the SS Hanseatic. The soundtrack is from a souvenir 45rpm record that was presumably sold onboard. Another nostalgic trip back in time aboard a vessel that's now long gone. Bon voyage!

I was on The Hanseatic in the 1960s, with my mother and father. It wasn't just a ship, it was a wonderful luxury experience. We'd traveled The Berlin and The Bremen, but for this young child The Hanseatic was the best. I even have photos of me singing one night with the ship's live band in front of the travelers. Great memories!!!

She was such a fine Ship ! I'm from Cuxhaven at the North sea where she started her voyages at the Steubenhöft - Pier. I was aboard at the age of 6 in 1965 for about one hour, grandpa who worked at the harbour showed me the ship, he knew some of the crew - members and we were allowed to come aboard. I was so impressed ! The ship I love the most - one of the last classic liners in black white and red ! Love her forever !

Thank you for posting. My mother was a cruise director on the Hanseatic. Seeing this video allowed me to see it through her eyes.

I have a postcard of her sitting at a pier in Port Everglades. I wished the video showed interiors of her. This would be a ship I would sail if it were around today.

Thank you, shipgeek! This video is a Hanseatic treasure chest: the length, filmed in color and with the audio from the record. I have quite a few favorite liners and the Hanseatic is one of them. You could call her the German first cousin of the postwar Ile de France!---Very sad that his wonderful liner's career came to an unexpected early end because of the 1966 fire but at least there were no injuries that I know of and no lives were lost. From what I've read it appears that despite her age of 36 at the time of the fire the Hanseatic might have continued for quite a few more years as the Homeric would have done also and as actually happened with the Britanis which had a remarkably long career.

The fire wasn´t that destructive. It was in the machine room located ... but NYFD was destroying the interior in search for fire-nests ... that was the real damage.

1966 was also the time when more and more travelers between Europe and America used the plane. The number of passengers declined rapidly during this time, so that only a few ships were sufficient to meet the demand. During this time, many liners have been decommissioned. For this reason, it was probably also an economic question not to restore this ship, which is now 36 years old, after the fire. The problem with the ships built as liners was also that they were not suitable as cruise ships.

For some reason, this ship reminds me of the Ile De France.

I agree completely. The post-war Ile de France and the Hanseatic had a strong resemblance. I don't know if the two liners were ever photographed together or shown together in a newsreel. The Ile de France was retired in 1958, the same year the Hanseatic debuted so if their years of service overlapped it was only for a very short time.

Wow, thank you for posting this video!
I, by chance just finished watching your video about the SS United States coming back from Germany in 1965. You made my day with that video as we returned from Germany in 1961 on her. Interestingly our friends were returning on the Hansiatic at the same time. My boyhood friend and I would argue about which was the better ship. Now I was able to get a glimpse at this German ship, thanks to you!

I was, as well. Maybe in 1962? There were other young children. We'd sit together in the main lounge, drawing, talking. It all felt very special.
