I met Melinda Gebbie at Comic-Con,
A couple of years ago when she was doing a signing for Lost Girls at the Top Shelf booth,
This was after the news had come out that she and Alan Moore would be getting married,
    She's a charming lady.

Just reread Lost Girls and it's a beautiful piece of work, the sex is arousing, it actually has a plot and characters you care about, lifted from Children's lit, admittedly, and a hotel that makes the dance academy in Suspiria look drab. The ending is genuinely sad and poignant, into the bargain. I'm glad there's a pornographic fable as amitious and nuanced as this in the world. Lots of nods to other notable literary smut-hounds like Beardsley, Loúys, Apollinare & Schiele within. Moore and Gebbie's approach was commendable, and if it offends some sweaty, superhero-addicted fanboy in his mum's basement somewhere, then all the better.

"I think the only difference between pornography and erotica is the income bracket of the person reading it"
... LOL! Alan Moore: one of the very very very few truthful humans on planet earth! LOL! Genius!!!

I got Lost Girls yesterday and am already half way through it. the first thing that struck me was the beauty of the art work. i'm not talking about the images of nudity or of sexual activity (although they are brilliant) but the grace and delicacy taken in each panal. Gebbie's work is breath taking and Moore is a consumate story teller.
    Best £33 i've ever spent.

Wow- that sequence at 3:16 is brilliantly executed, with the shadows reflecting her mindset. Very clever.

I'm 27 and have only really just discovered the world of the graphic novel. Well, i bought the first two LoEG volumes after watching the film - a good thing i did, so as not to be disappointed by the Hollywoodisation of the source material. Ditto VfV and i got Watchmen on the same day as i saw the film - that was only slightly deviated, not bad.
i'm looking forward to buying lost girls - i find the whole concept of openning up and examining the 'classic' and even the 'sacred' to be fascinating

does alan moore in this remind anyone else of ben kinsley as the mandrin before the plot twist

It's fairer to say the Mandarin before the plot twist reminded me of Alan Moore.

I think Stan Lee is more sort of pure escapism just flights of fantasy whereas Alan is more trying act like a novelist; exploring humanity and what drives it etc

    • @aurulupus
      @aurulupus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Stan Lee was staunchly against escapism and refused to let his audience not think about what he was writing.
He even wrote a news letter detailing such. Captain America was always against xenophobia. The X-Men was about racism.
You're confusing superficially dark storytelling with depth.

  • @KurtMcGowan

@TheHarryMason I don't think its ruining these stories. Moore and Gebbie aren't just turning them into exploitive pornograghy. They're just interpreting the characters in their own way and using a bit of imagination to add more to the original stories. I think everybody's free to their own interpretation. Also Lewis Carroll who wrote Alice used to photograph underage girls naked. So I think its fine to challenge the repressive ideologies of some of these 'classic' children's stories. My opinion.

  • @tanketom
    @tanketom 16 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Not sure which Charlies Angels he talked about, but the original ones are from 1976, which is well over 20 years earlier than Lost Girls (unless you count the '92 version).

No she was talking to Daniel Clowes and said
"I can really relate to the
    women from Ghost World"
Which is a completely different comic.

No, it's not. Creating children to ensure our species' survival is. The act itself, while potentially beautiful, is just that. Anyone who thinks otherwise is hedonistic or misguided.

It's a fantastic series, but its VERY hardcore. Now, its not just sex sex sex, and I feel that the sex is introspective and does add some interesting elements to the characters. Its interesting to see Moore's take on the classical stories from a sexual viewpoint.
I think its a marvelous series and is wonderfully written and has a lot to say about pornography, but if you can't take hardcore sex (or if you can't handle things like gay sex or incest) you may want to stay away.

Alan Moore is a far superior writer but Stan Lee has created many of the most famous and enduring characters that outnumber those that Morre has created. It's hard to say really, they're both quite different.

@BatOtaku13 Well Stan Lee has been a great promo man for Marvel comics throughout his life although to be fair it was Stan Lee & Jack Kirby & Steve Ditko who made the biggest contributions to the Marvel comics as we know it, Stan did take the lions share of all the credit though and IMHO it's really only been in the last couple of decades or so that he's given others like Kirby and Ditko any mention at all.

Its Alan Moore opinion of the sexual development of those characters
Sex is one very defining feature of human psychology and these characters are unique meaning and different from other real world characters meaning that they could have had a different sexual development than most.

I wouldn't have any problem with giving a Lost Girls film that kind of rating either,
I'm not sure that you could get all that many theatres to carry an X rated film these days though, The MPAA is pretty gutless even when it comes to NC-17 or unrated films these days.

I agree with you completely. When I read watchmen and v for vendetta I wondered what would posses a person to create such morally ambiguous and unsympathetic characters. But when he explains it it's like "oh duh! that makes perfect sense! that's the ONLY way to do these characters!"

I have read Lost Girls and I found it wonderful. But could you expect less of Alan Moore as for Melinda Gibbs art it was spot on. As for the pornographic nature of Lost Girls it just makes the story better.

  • @WillScarlet16

Alan Moore wrote Lost Girls because so many people become outraged at the mere mention or hint of sex in visual media.

Whats with the digg at Stan Lee? Neither of these guys are better then the other since they had completely diffrent styles and purposes. Stan Lee helped bring comics to the world. Moore made us think deeper on the stories that can be in comics. Both are great and equal in their greatness.

I dunno. I dont get it. Cartoon porn is strange. Cartoon porn showing beloved children characters is stranger. Add incest and you've got something truly odd.
What was the point of it? I love Alan Moore, but without being a blind follower, you have to sort of ask what he was trying to achieve.

lost girls is a great book. it does however contain alot of hardcore sex. but i found it very butefual becuse alan moore shows a very lovealbe side to his writing. becuse alan moore wrote such as v for vendta and watchmen etc wich have insaine violnce and i like alot of action when i rread comic books. but lost girls changes that for me. i mean lost girls is the only no violnet book i will read i think its a reall y good book. its a most have if your a alan more fan.
