A company lies about what they're releasing, and a bunch of mouth breathing troglodytes rush out to preorder it. There is no legitimate reason to preorder a game. Wal-mart will always have plenty of the games in stock. In the 1 out of a 1000 times that Wal-mart runs out, just go to Target. Multiply that by 100000000000000000000 times if you preorder a DIGITAL game before the reviews are out. Even if you have slow internet and want to have the game installed before release, there is no reason why you can't wait until the day before release so that you can read reviews. And remember that the longer it takes for a company to send out review copies to critics, the higher the chance is that the game is bad. Don't fall for the "muh spoilers" meme, even if spoilers got out it would have less of an effect on sales than not allowing reviews until launch. The reason for this is that some smart people actually do exist who don't buy something until they read reviews or watch gameplay footage. And remember that a publicly traded business NEVER cares about you, the consumer. The only thing a business cares about is its investors. A business is like a sociopath. It is only in your bests interests to trust a sociopath if it is in the sociopath's best interest to be trustworthy. They don't care about your happiness, the only time they will do something for you is if it makes investors happy. Very often this system of mutual benefit will benefit the consumer, but sometimes it doesn't. And you should never EVER trust a corporation, no matter how many times they've kept their promises in the past. As soon as investors want them to lie, they will lie. It's as predictable as a scorpion stinging you if you pick it up. And remember, if you have ever preordered a game, then you are a hypocrite, because you are the problem. Stop encouraging bad behavior.

Those people were right. I don't know if 'Stadia' is the future or not but streaming certainly is. Stadia actually serves a purpose and it makes me wonder why so many gamers hate it for trying to be more affordable entry point into gaming. Put it this way. To play Cyberpunk 2077 you'd need to buy a PS5/Series X or build a gaming PC...or you could just spend $60 on the game and buy it through Stadia. I'm not sure Stadia is as dead as people claim it is. Yong has some bias against Stadia, maybe that Microsoft money he gets, but it's still getting AAA releases, it's getting Outriders on the same date as any other console for example. I think people really misconstrued the first party thing. When Stadia is coming built in to TVs and Laptops for example it seems their goal is to be a more casual friendly system.

Came here to say this. Love this new wave of customers demanding accountability. Now if only these lawsuits actually cost the companies an amount of money that incentivises them enough to try, rather than a drop in the bucket. They won't, but we can hope that they will see that they are losing trust, trust is a resource with realistic limits.

It's not the developers, it's the leadership. The leadership calls all or most of the shots. I don't get why people can't separate the leadership of the company/studio from developers. If there is only just the devs running a studio/company, then be angry at them.

Oddly enough, they just terminated a project that they have been working on for years but couldn't get off the ground. Apparently Google was working on balloon based internet for almost a decade but finally shut the project down after their initial money investment dried up and the fact that most of the countries that the balloons would be stationed in kept thinking that the balloons would be used to spy while providing internet access. So there you go, at least one project that was doomed to fail but Google held onto for more than a couple of years.
The big tech monopolies should be broken up tbh. That would be a huge step towards a truly free economy instead of whatever hellish oligarchy we are currently living through.
Even if Stadia worked as well as advertised, there's a bottleneck called "overly greedy American ISPs" which would have prevented most players from being able to stream 4k-60fps games

Not just American ISPs. The Australian government started installing a national broadband network back in 2010, but then the party changed and the new guys decided that fibre was too expensive so we'd be installing copper wiring. Ten years later the installation is still ongoing and the same party are just realising that copper has been obsolete for 20 years for a reason. No opt out either, so once the node has been installed you're either on it or on mobile data.

Stadia had everything going for it. Unavoidable latency, monthly fees to unlock barebones features that are free on all other platforms, having to re-purchase games you already own at full price just to play them at inferior framerates & resolutions compared to current/previous gen consoles, not even owning your games - your access can be locked anytime without your consent, fully priced >5 year old games, a pathetically small library of games to play, a consistent lack of real communication, the consistent inability to meet their goals, an awful controller, Phil Harrison & the official stadia account repeatedly lying about what the platform is capable of, Phil Harrison knowingly lying to his own stadia employees about their job security, and so much more. Its failure took us all by surprise.
Destiny 2 didn't even run on highest settings like they claimed their servers would be able to do, it looked more like the console version running on medium settings which made it absolutely pointless to own a Stadia, especially when they still charged full price on top of a subscription for games you don't even get to keep when the subscription runs out or the servers shut down which is already happening soon. RIP anyone who actually invested money in this thing...
I knew from the start especially with it being google cloud gaming was a terrible idea and their business model was so bad, it was only a matter of time, I feel bad for the devs an all but if you bought into stadia you shot yourself in the foot
Funny thing about google stadia not able to run Destiny 2 at 4k/60fps is that I play that game on a Zen 3600 / 16gb 3200 and Reference Vega 64 on max @ above 60fps most of the time (exception being Bray Exoscience for some reason) 1440p without OC.

Pardon my ignorance, however their advertised performance was always laughable in my point of view specially when they started talking about 8k.... For me, I saw Stadia as a scam right from the start which is why I never bought one. It's mystery box and if you ask them what's inside they'd say "it just works". If I'm going to buy something, I want to make sure that it can get the job done and not shit all over itself if my internet is down due to factors out of my control.

Google saw the BS marketing campaign for the mid-gen versions of the last-gen consoles & said to themselves, "our little $h¡t can hit 4K/60 too! It's all marketing after all." One major problems was that bs was even stronger with Stadia compared, at least, to real consoles.

Google has constantly failed with a lot of their new products. It’s hard for many to believe that they will develop and support them. Stadia is another nail in their coffin of dead software and hardware products. I doubt even the consumers who tried to side with Google will trust any future products produced by them.
The entire idea of "Streaming" Games is bizzare to me, because it nevers truly run on your rig, and you never truly play the game, only watching it. I'd rather play on 30fps on old PC's than stream on 4k60fps.
Technically, you ARE still playing the game; just with actual significant lag from physical distance from the system and bandwidth limits that can never be truly eradicated short of using a quantum network. What boggles ME is that so many are against cloud gaming for not being able to physically have and keep their games yet have boners for DLSS which ALSO depends on Internet connectivity despite needing meaty local hardware as well. So it's controlling AND wasteful.
I didn't buy the game myself but the clips I've seen looked enjoyable, wish they didn't screw the pooch with extremely little content. I probably would have snagged it

Ah. This little aspect is the nail in the coffin atm of the "Streaming is THE FUTURE". It always look so easy, but the processing demand is far higher than most think and the result is that to actually do Real-Time 4K Cloud-Computing always turns out far more expensive than anticipated. You need a super beefy computing center which not even Google has the power to just magically make happen. Even if they where spotted selling said magic... Stadia is doomed. it just is, destined for the notorious google graveyard...

There's no way that this wasn't in the fine print. It probably had a disclaimer saying 'up to 4K 60FPS'. _Support_ 4K means that it has the ability to, and is intentionally ambiguous to avoid litigation. You're going to need to find a new horse now, Yong - we all understand the state of Stadia and the scumminess behind it. I should also note that whenever you hear about class-action lawsuits against giant corporations, you're only helping the law firm that is organizing it: the people pursuing the class-action lawsuit will usually be paid peanuts, while the law firm gains both positive exposure, and their case fees - they're more scummy than whatever company they're 'going after'.
You get to the point where nobody feels bad about anything anymore, because they just keep lying to you. we're gonna give you this and that, and when they get your money all you have from them is excuses and broken promises.
That's why I gave up on preordering, and I also refuse to actually buy a game until I can see exactly what I'm going to be buying into. I'm a patient person, so I have no issues waiting for videos and reviews to pop up. I generally wait atleast a few months before I buy a game just in case the developers feel like adding some "surprise mechanics".

None of this advertising leaves the building without first being run by a Lawyer. Not with a company the size of google. I am certain there is enough "up to's" and technicalities in their favor that they wont be legally vulnerable. If they did put this out without being cleared by a Lawyer, or a lawyer cleared this and he didnt know enough about the stadia, I would be shocked.

4k i don't need. I stream games when traveling. (I travel a lot due to work), but when I'm home i want to be able to run the games on my own superior HW, and not have codec issues.
I feel like the problem with stadia never was the power of their servers. I just think, getting a 4k 60fps video feed requires a pretty damn good connection and bandwidth. Maybe that's just me because I never had fantastic bandwidth ever.
Stadia starts stuttering and lagging so bad for me each time I try to play. It'll be fine for 5 minutes then it tanks. I've got +100/mbs so idk what the deal is but I've given up
I thought from the get go that stadia seemed to be generally over promising and likely to disappoint. But I didn't think the platform and service would be miss managed to the extent it has been. Glad I decided to wait and see if I was wrong.

I want to laugh, none of this surprises me. Theoretical numbers almost never translate to real world performance and yet people are suckered in (it is a small group at least).
The marketing team needs to be put on a leash in a part of an accountability push. Unlikely - sure they hammered the 4k BUT they DID say *UP TO* 4K - no different than when a company advertises a sale and states *up to 60% off* - meaning not every product will be reduced by 60% but there are some products which do reach this. Came here to say this. Love this new wave of customers demanding accountability. Now if only these lawsuits actually cost the companies an amount of money that incentivises them enough to try, rather than a drop in the bucket. They won't, but we can hope that they will see that they are losing trust, trust is a resource with realistic limits.

It's not the developers, it's the leadership. The leadership calls all or most of the shots. I don't get why people can't separate the leadership of the company/studio from developers. If there is only just the devs running a studio/company, then be angry at them.

Oddly enough, they just terminated a project that they have been working on for years but couldn't get off the ground. Apparently Google was working on balloon based internet for almost a decade but finally shut the project down after their initial money investment dried up and the fact that most of the countries that the balloons would be stationed in kept thinking that the balloons would be used to spy while providing internet access. So there you go, at least one project that was doomed to fail but Google held onto for more than a couple of years.
The big tech monopolies should be broken up tbh. That would be a huge step towards a truly free economy instead of whatever hellish oligarchy we are currently living through.

The Australian government started installing a national broadband network back in 2010, but then the party changed and the new guys decided that fibre was too expensive so we'd be installing copper wiring. Ten years later the installation is still ongoing and the same party are just realising that copper has been obsolete for 20 years for a reason. No opt out either, so once the node has been installed you're either on it or on mobile data.

I have fast internet and the input lag with stadia was a joke. My curiosity led me to the free trial. I never got 4K 60FPS on any game.
I remember seeing some videos on the lag and it was dreadful, I don't know what made them think that was acceptable.
I made the mistake of trying to play Celeste on Stadia. I’ve seen less video artifacts in TH-cam gameplay videos of Celeste rendered at 360p.

Unavoidable latency, monthly fees to unlock barebones features that are free on all other platforms, having to re-purchase games you already own at full price just to play them at inferior framerates & resolutions compared to current/previous gen consoles, not even owning your games - your access can be locked anytime without your consent, fully priced >5 year old games, a pathetically small library of games to play, a consistent lack of real communication, the consistent inability to meet their goals, an awful controller, Phil Harrison & the official stadia account repeatedly lying about what the platform is capable of, Phil Harrison knowingly lying to his own stadia employees about their job security, and so much more.
Its failure took us all by surprise.
Destiny 2 didn't even run on highest settings like they claimed their servers would be able to do, it looked more like the console version running on medium settings which made it absolutely pointless to own a Stadia, especially when they still charged full price on top of a subscription for games you don't even get to keep when the subscription runs out or the servers shut down which is already happening soon. RIP anyone who actually invested money in this thing...

Funny thing about google stadia not able to run Destiny 2 at 4k/60fps is that I play that game on a Zen 3600 / 16gb 3200 and Reference Vega 64 on max @ above 60fps most of the time (exception being Bray Exoscience for some reason) 1440p without OC.

For me, I saw Stadia as a scam right from the start which is why I never bought one. It's mystery box and if you ask them what's inside they'd say "it just works". The entire idea of "Streaming" Games is bizzare to me, because it nevers truly run on your rig, and you never truly play the game, only watching it. I'd rather play on 30fps on old PC's than stream on 4k60fps.

We don’t have the proper internet for the average user to even get the amount of bandwidth actually needed. It’s an onion of lies and everyone who tried to vouch for them is part of these recurring problems with the gaming industry.

It always look so easy, but the processing demand is far higher than most think and the result is that to actually do Real-Time 4K Cloud-Computing always turns out far more expensive than anticipated. You need a super beefy computing center which not even Google has the power to just magically make happen. Even if they where spotted selling said magic...

There's no way that this wasn't in the fine print. It probably had a disclaimer saying 'up to 4K 60FPS'. _Support_ 4K means that it has the ability to, and is intentionally ambiguous to avoid litigation. You're going to need to find a new horse now, Yong - we all understand the state of Stadia and the scumminess behind it. I should also note that whenever you hear about class-action lawsuits against giant corporations, you're only helping the law firm that is organizing it: the people pursuing the class-action lawsuit will usually be paid peanuts, while the law firm gains both positive exposure, and their case fees - they're more scummy than whatever company they're 'going after'.

That's why I gave up on preordering, and I also refuse to actually buy a game until I can see exactly what I'm going to be buying into. I'm a patient person, so I have no issues waiting for videos and reviews to pop up. I generally wait atleast a few months before I buy a game just in case the developers feel like adding some "surprise mechanics".

None of this advertising leaves the building without first being run by a Lawyer. Not with a company the size of google. I am certain there is enough "up to's" and technicalities in their favor that they wont be legally vulnerable. If they did put this out without being cleared by a Lawyer, or a lawyer cleared this and he didnt know enough about the stadia, I would be shocked.

I feel like the problem with stadia never was the power of their servers. I just think, getting a 4k 60fps video feed requires a pretty damn good connection and bandwidth. Maybe that's just me because I never had fantastic bandwidth ever.

I want to laugh, none of this surprises me. Theoretical numbers almost never translate to real world performance and yet people are suckered in (it is a small group at least).
The marketing team needs to be put on a leash in a part of an accountability push. I've heard plenty of times marketing promised things that were not possible to meet in time, derailing development by crunching overtime in a panic to avoid disappointing shareholders with the inevitable poor launch reception.
