Will the EU put in place a long-term energy strategy? | Inside Story

- European energy ministers have failed to agree on a plan to cap Russian gas prices at an emergency meeting in Brussels.
The session aimed to consider how to shield households and businesses from soaring energy bills.
EU energy commissioner Kadri Simson says countries heavily reliant on Russian supplies fear they will be cut off altogether.
President Vladimir Putin had earlier threatened to make Europe 'freeze' this winter if a cap is agreed.
So what are the options? And are the measures already taken enough to get the bloc through the winter?
Presenter: Imran Khan
Guests:
Sandrine Dixson-Decleve - Energy climate researcher and co-author of 'Earth for All: A Survival Guide for Humanity'
Clive Moffatt - Founder and chairman of the cross-industry UK Energy Security Group and a former UK government energy adviser
Mehmet Ogutcu - Chairman of the London Energy Club and a former director at British Gas

Not just households, but industries will be forced to close, millions will be laid off, entire economies will be devastated. But hey, Slava Ukraini, right?
😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Welcome to the stone age, Europe.
Lol what does that make Russia then?
Ah, so if we had a publically owned energy system we would not be in such trouble. Nice.
They would be producing natural gas and oil while spending that money in your country. Like we do in Texas. No shortage here and we all have jobs.

EU leaders.. We dare putin to cut the gas supply. Meanwhile let's cap the gas price shall we. 😁😁😁
Europeans are suffering because of EU leaders, elected and unelected like Ursula. Steps EU leaders took eyes wide open that will bring misery to Europeans.
1) EU leaders allowed US to play in its backyard having saw what US done in middle east, they allowed US to regime change Ukraine in 2014.
2) EU leaders walked away from the Minsk Agreements (twice) that stabilized and brought peace to the region.
3) EU leaders were given the opportunity to say five words "Ukraine will not join NATO". instead they said "Ukraine will join NATO".
4) US asked EU to cancel Nordstream 2 that would had supplied Europe with more cheap Russian gas for decades. EU said ok we cancel cheap Russian gas to Europe.
5) US asked EU to sanction Russian. EU leaders said ok, with exception of Hungary who feared Hungarians will suffer if Russian cut gas in response.
6) EU with US put more sanctions on Russia (4 times?) to try to destroy Russia economy. Russia cut gas. EU accused Russia of trying to destroy Europe economies.
7) US is the largest global exporter of LNG. Europe is forced to buy US LNG at inflated price (10 times more than cheap Russian pipeline gas?). EU increased military spending from 2% GDP to 5% GDP. FED raised interest rates, Euro tanked against USD. The greatest transfer of wealth from Europe to US underway. After WWII Europe had to transfer all its gold to US to pay for WWII reparations, weapons and supplies from US to Europe. European money is being diverted by EU leaders to US to try to save US economy.
EU leaders done multiple "mistakes" at the behest of US, makes one wonder if EU leaders intentionally placed US geopolitical and US economy interests above the interests of Europeans?
EU (and UK) leaders and citizens suffer from an inferiority complex. They feel defeated by the USA because it's the biggest economy in the world if you compare it per country. They are in a trance, and feel they must obey the superior one. They refer to themselves as "small and insignificant". Even though EU is the biggest economy in the world, they see themselves as weak. It's absolutely sad and pathetic.
Very accurate. Thank you
@@yurichtube1162 The Americans has being telling their leaders for years "look how well Europe is doing, why cant you make US do as well". Well now he US leaders can tell their citizens "US doing better then Europe". The coming US Thanks Giving, US leaders will give thanks to the EU leaders for doing what they asked.

Everything Points to America:

If I imposed my laws on other people, I should be condemned for thinking that my unilateral actions could have jurisdiction over others. If I prohibited others from buying from another expecting others to abide by my prohibition, I should be laughed out of town especially if I violated my unilateral imposition. There is no question that Europe and the US are accustomed to imposing themselves on other nations as part of their colonial assumptions of hegemony. It is about time that unilateral sanctions by the West be challenged by the world community. Western sanctions and other interventions in the internal affairs of other nations must stop. Colonialism must die for the sake of humanity.

There is no solution when EU cannot buy Russian gas under the European Union systems of the price cap. It is either you buy in Russian Rubles or not if you want energy from Russia period.

You can always see who owns the politicians in the US and UK, it is those fossil fuel companies we adore. History shows that black gold, caused lots of wars. If we included the cost of foreign wars and protection that our two countries spent protecting the oil industry, we could have rebuild our countries into the world of the future we used to dream about. it is time to rethink capitalism, it time for the people to decide the direction of the nation, not the ones who have benefited from the disfunction we currently live in.
First, the gas & oil are cut to EU. Second, the manufacturing in EU is destroyed as a results. Then, recession becomes deepened in EU. Hence, all manufacturing will be moved to East & north America.

The lack of respectable countries assisting in ending this conflict, simply looking out for themselves, is very troubling. If Europe succumbs to energy pressure, it will be a new era, a terrible return to the past, poorer & weaker countries will likely become victims to stronger nations, those countries will likely be colonized... Global trade & cooperation will collapse, humanitarian aid will dry up. Environmental concerns will be ignored... Naive, selfish, hateful, jealous, propaganda infused, useless countries will snear at European conflict, then dysfunction & war might well be at their doors, and no one will help them, at least for noble comforting reasons...
If europe want to kill themselves, let them be. It's time for asia, africa, and latin america to rise
What a joke! No one will help them, at least for 'NOBLE' comforting reasons...? If these supposedly 'Noble' countries had really helped the weaker countries, they wouldn't be still struggling now after decades/centuries of 'helping'. Frankly, we don't need their help because all the 'help' came with strings attached and breed corruption and despotic leaders doing Western bidding against the interests of their own citizens. We need fair trade/financial policies and cooperation to improve our industrial capacity, not exploitative multinational corporations sucking the wealth of weaker nations.
@@adamiskandar5107 better cooperation models should be developed. Sometimes charity causes more problems than controlled support with "strings attached" and accountability required. Resource processing facilities are complex & expensive, dysfunction of some regions make such investments risky, "strings attached" is to be expected. All that will happen is market reorientation. Whoever EU is buying from will stop selling to someone else. Whoever that someone else is will buy Russian energy.

The British govt should offer an even greater price cap but only for households, landlords and businesses that meet certain parameters of need. They might also wish to impose a temporary rent control so that millions aren't booted out of their flats as landlords raise their rent to offset gas price hikes. It's a thorny issue. Another idea would be for the UK to scrap the whole solidarity hypocrisy - as it backed even worse and more murderous invasions in the last few decades than Ukraine - and just import as much Russian gas as they can on the cheap.
Solidarity hypocrisy? They are the main instigator together with the US for the continuing mess in this conflict with Russia. I think the people of the UK are really stupid to allow their government to pursue this senseless warmongering policy targeting Russia and China at the expense of the wellbeing of the vast majority of people.

If Energy giants want to use tax payers money for a bailout they should then either turn the bigger majority of shares over to the people OR give shares to every house hold it's time they learnt like any other business if the price goes up for your commodity you then have to start dipping in to your savings (profit margin) for far to long now they've been getting it both ways.

The E.U is so dependent on the U.S that they can't think what's best for themselves.
The best short term and long term solutions for the E.U is Russia.
The E.U should give Russia E.U membership/or work towards it. The EU won't loose anything instead they'll become a international economic powerhouse competing with US & China.
Democracy is notorious in not being able to have long-term vision and big-picture view. Even if they had, they couldn't pursue for long, e.g. 10-20-30 years timeframe, let alone 50-year plan like China's.
