He sings for us all, folks who keep on fighting for life, for a better place for our children. We are like seeds, waiting for the rain, to bloom, to live our full potential. It's not easy. Many times I wanted to quit. But still I keep standing strong. So God, make it rain, so my seeds can grow. Who understands the hardship of living better than a blue tune?
I hate that Foy Vance gets no recognition for writing the song and is completely underrated for his beautifully soulful sound. This is the best version of the song and the only version I will ever have in my iTunes library.
T Santi I wouldn't say I don't like other versions of this song, but I do agree that he doesn't get much recognition for this one. I think the original is the best version. So much soul. 😍😍
yes maybe but Ed Sheeran made it famous. as much as i like this version too, i would never even look for it, if it wasn't for Ed Sheeran version as i never heard this song before until i watch Son of anarchy. Even if Foy might not have much recognition for it, he got some extra cash in the bank thanks to Ed so that's something and who ever didn't know him before, like me, now they do thanks to Ed too! :-)
Vance understands pain and the beauty it creates in the soul of an artist as they sing. His voice literally pours out from a depth of emotion you can feel and in turn, it washes into our own souls as we listen.... we come to understand, from voices like this that there is no emotional privacy in the utter creation of singing the blues.
I just saw Foy live for $15 in a theatre that holds less than 200 people. That will be the best spent money of this lifetime. This guy is so real deal in every song, every performance....He is like BB King and Billy Joel and God knows who else all wrapped into one
Grabbed a glass with ice and a bottle of Macallan, sat down closed my eyes and listened to this on a rainy day....TRANSPORTS YOUR SOUL. Let it be written....Foy Vance will usher in the new golden era of BLUES.
I discovered this song by seeing H.E.R. perform a gospel rendition. Foy is the best singer-songwriter-performer I've heard in decades, since Tom Waits, Van Morrison, Springsteen and Etheridge were young. Composers earn greater royalties than the singers of cover versions, so I applaud Ed Sheeran, H.E.R., Kacey Musgraves, Elton John and Miranda Lambert for spreading the genius of Foy's artistry.
Sheeran was an avid fan of the series and mentioned it on his Twitter account. When the creator read it, he proposed that Sheeran record a song for one of the episodes. As Sheeran was touring with Vance at the time, and as the song started with the lyrics "When the sins of my father / Weigh down in my soul", he thought it was appropriate for the series and with Vance's approval, he recorded the song.
I heard this for the first time in the finale of Your Honor. Haunting to say the least. Googled it and found Sheehan’s version. Outstanding. Wanted to know who wrote it and found Foy. His performance was the best of all. The pain comes through so clearly.
I was surprised! I didn't expect that song on the show "Your Honor", shades of SOA playing this haunting song in the last tragic beyond sad ending of SOA 😭 Anyway after hearing Ed Sheeran sing it on SOA, I looked it up and listened to Foy Vance, the OG of this epic hit. Both renditions are righteous and stunningly haunting. The footage on SOA as this achingly haunting song plays is very gut wrenching as it was back then in 2012, and rewatching that last episode footage currently. What a show and a wild ride SOA was. What's trippy is that there's a new show on Fri nights called Fire Country, one of the leading stars name Bodé, to me, looks hella like Jax did on SOA. ❤️
To Scott Ando I guess I'm one of the few who already was obsessed with this song having heard it first on SOA song by Ed Sheeran. As soon as I heard a few chords on Your honor by the talented man with the guitar.
I was today years old when I heard of Foy Vance and this AMAZING song. I've blasted it and three neighbors came to find out who he is. 18,905/10 Recommend.
When the sins of my father Weigh down in my soul And the pain of my mother Will not let me go Well, I know there can come fire from the sky To refine the purest of kings And even though I know this fire brings me pain Even so And just the same Make it rain Make it rain down, Lord Make it rain Oh, make it rain Make it rain Make it rain down, Lord Make it rain Make it rain And the seed needs the water Before it grows out of the ground But it just keeps on getting hotter And the hunger more profound Well, I know there can come tears from the eyes But they may as well be in vain Even though I know these tears come with pain Even so And just the same Make it rain Make it rain down, Lord Make it rain Make it rain Make it rain Make it rain down, Lord Make it rain Make it rain Make it rain [x8] And the seas are full of water That stops by the shore Just like the riches of grandeur That never reach the poor And let the clouds fill with thunderous applause And let lightning be the veins And fill the sky With all that they can drop When it's time To make a change Make it rain Make it rain down, Lord Make it rain Make it rain Make it rain Make it rain down, Lord
Respect to sheeran for spreading this beautiful song but i knew when he sang it that something was missing. You can tell that this is foy vances the way he sings it.
SO unbelievably talented! Foy sings from the heart - and gut-- from someone who has experienced deep, unrelenting pain, and who (I think) understand that this is a refining process allowed by a loving Creator xxoo
Think I just found one of my favourite songs ever. Heard this on SOA but Foy Vance is the business! absolutely blown away by these vocals. Imma be in church kicking it with Mr Vance if anyone needs me, Lord Jesus!
You just know this song is about to hit different, when you hear the first chord...personally, I just need to take a deep breath every single time it comes on. Truly a masterpiece....I still have trouble wrapping my head around this being a live-performance, it's just flawless.
❤️ 👏 As an almost 70 year old, classically trained pianist and organist who still enjoys ALL genres of music, I think what you said is true for everyone who sings or plays an instrument. In order to make music ‘come to life’ and truly touch those who hear it, it can ONLY happen when the artist themselves is blessed with the ‘gift’ (like Foy Vance has), and are able to convey it to those who hear it - regardless of what type/genre of music it is. THIS is one that really has me believe that it’s something a gifted person is born with the ability to do. I 1st discovered Foy Vance when I heard him playing ‘I Would Die For You’ or ‘ Feel For Me’ IIRC, and bc of the lyrics it meant a lot to me - almost as much as does this one, but for different reasons. Still 👍 🎤 👏, underrated, and not recognized by many people - such a shame!
So glad I found this artist. I haven't been this impressed by a singer/songwriter in a good long while. Heard the impressive cover of this by Laith Al-Saadi on The Voice. Traced it back to Ed Sheeran and thankfully found this very gripping version by the original artist. Just bought Foy's LIve from Bangor Abbey album. Very impressive. Some shades of early Springsteen and Van Morrison but such originality that feels every word.
All the pain of the universe can be met and processed right here, in this vocal performance. I don’t even try to share it with others- pain will bring them to it, when it’s time to make it rain.
I love it and I make no comparisons, Eds version led me to this so I am grateful and respectful of the simple beauty of the truth, greatness and kindred souls that shared this with us all. Thanks
For those who are saying he is underrated, I agree - BUT - He is getting his well-deserved recognition, due to Ed Sheeran's cover and the show SOA. Think about it, if that didn't happen, most of us would have never heard of the him or his soul-wrenching song!
I love this song and I feel comfort from his verses "make it rain, make it rain, make it rain, make it rain." I love rain and I get peace when it rains.
The guitar work on this track is absolutely amazing but that voice oh my goodness. Timeless timeless timeless. I can drink a whole lot of bourbon and listen to Foy but especially this track
I heard my neighbors playing the Ed Sheridan version. I look the song up. Heard this one and have never even listened to Ed sing it. This is how the song belongs.
This is one of the most amazing vocals I have ever heard... although Ed Sheeran sang the radio version of this song, I believe it was a hit, but when I heard this version of the tune done by Foy Vance, the actual writer of the song, it 'bout tore me up. So many of us can't quite let that one heartbreak go, take a few minutes to check this masterpiece out...... Foy Vance, he brought on the floods. sheila

Such a strong song. Never heard it... Untill "Your Honor" Powerfull in all it's details. Combination of voice and guitar.... growing stronger in this song
A beautifully soulful sound! Make it rain........ When the sins of my father Weigh down in my soul And the pain of my mother Will not let me go Well, I know there can come fire from the sky To refine the purest of kings And even though I know this fire brings me pain Even so And just the same Make it rain
Where have I been that I am hearing him for the first time. Wow!! Sounds like a story of a guy named Teddy Swims. No one knew of him. He was working at a chili's restaurant. Finally on the tour route and covid hit. Sigh. Check out Teddy guys. Another gem
I been listening to Ed Sheeran version since that episode of SOA where Jax killed his mom.... but after hearing the original, i don't know if i can listen to ed's version anymore... and i fucking love ED! But Foy.... definitely has a voice blessed by the GODS!
If everything went wrong...turn off the light.. take a drink ... and Mr. Foy Vance will let you enjoy the pain. Thank you Sir
I love this one much better than Ed Sheeran!! Much!!!!!!
I've never seen such an accurate comment

Poetry, emotions, the history of the human heart on a mic of this humble soul

This is the result of what happens when a grown man sings with his heart and soul!!!
Damn good song.
He'll yeah!
How can there be a song, that makes all the pains of a lifetime, actually feel worthwhile?
Your Honor…brought me here, had to find this gem! 2023 March!
There was the scent of rain in the air that brought me here. I've been here before but I've been in a drought far too long.

Same.. the song was good but the finale was too rushed unfortunately
Same same. Pain and soul is endless so beautiful. Jor el Quinn is the singer who covers it in Your Honor. Running to check him out next

Isn't it sad that nowadays the true artists are so underrated while so many talentless people are on the top?!

Ed Sheran got talent, but yea, most others I agree.
Snarky Puppy is talent, but still underground kinda
Talent doesn’t sell as much anymore
Arguably the best sung blues take ever performed publicly. The fact this was live is almost inconceivable.
After watching your honor a lot more people are hip to him and his music. Awesome
I've known this song for years, but "Youre Honor" brought me back. This version is immensely better than the studio version.
It's a very special thing when a song can render you completely speechless. Wow.
There is no thing that you can call perfection, but Foy with this, it's as close as you come.
Pure soul & pain!! Love it!!
LORD HAVE MERCY. Literally a musical MASTERPIECE.
I'm putting this tune into the book I am currently writing. It's perfect.

I am speechless, it's like I'm looking straight in his soul, it's magic, or should I say it's the beauty of a real artist
When the sins of my father
Weigh down in my soul
And the pain of my mother
Will not let me go
Well, I know there can come fire from the sky
To refine the purest of kings
And even though
I know this fire brings me pain
Even so
And just the same
Make it rain
Make it rain down, Lord
Make it rain
Oh, make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain down, Lord
Make it rain
Make it rain
And the seed needs the water
Before it grows out of the ground
But it just keeps on getting hotter
And the hunger more profound
Well, I know there can come tears from the eyes
But they may as well be in vain
Even though
I know these tears come with pain
Even so
And just the same
Make it rain
Make it rain down, Lord
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain down, Lord
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain [x8]
And the seas are full of water
That stops by the shore
Just like the riches of grandeur
That never reach the poor
And let the clouds fill with thunderous applause
And let lightning be the veins
And fill the sky
With all that they can drop
When it's time
To make a change
Make it rain
Make it rain down, Lord
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain down, Lord
Sry to say, but it's the wrong lyrics.. 😉
thanks dude
Thanks

Both renditions, by the OG Foy Vance and Ed Sheeran's sung on SOA are righteous.
Just saw him open for Ed Sheeran in Ottawa and I just about died. How is HE opening for Ed Sheeran, I love Ed but this guy should be headlining tours!
