Buster Douglas lost his mother 11 days before the Tyson fight and he was in training camp, he didn't morn her death because he was so focused. This drove Buster to not fear Mike Tyson at all, Mike Tyson even said he noticed how Buster didn't seem phased and this actually unsettled Mike. Buster's best performance by far.
Yes, and that version of Buster Douglas we never saw again. Although I thought he was lucky not to be counted out when Tyson did put him down. History could have been a lot different given a second or two!
@@checka1963 Buster purposefully waited for the count to reach 9 for maximum rest time. You can see that he was completely lucid even at the 1 count, because he hit the ground with his fist in frustration. He even looked at Mike Tyson during the count and kneelt on one leg to wait the count.

While the loss to Buster Douglas certainly affected the aura and mystique of Iron Mike, the first loss to Holyfield to me was the one that really broke the image of the invincible Iron Mike Tyson. The loss to Douglas can be attributed to Tyson not taking the fight seriously and was not really prepared, so that was more of a mental loss, but the fight with Holyfield was truly a fight he lost in the ring, as well as the fight with Lewis. The last two L's were just due to a fighter showing his age and clinging on too long.
I remember watching this video a year ago when I was struggling.. Seeing this has brought tears to my eyes. I live much different life now and this video is still here to remind me of how far I have come. Never give up in life. No condition is permanent

The class boxers were not intimidated by Tyson knocking out a lot of nobodies. Holyfield owned him from the first seconds of the fight. Tyson ended up biting him in the second bout because he had no answer to Holyfield's class - a good boxer always beats a good fighter.

As this legend already won many matches, you get older and tired and you just don't care anymore, it's just another day at the office with this guy... Just too bad he couldn't end his career and ongoing reputations in his predominant time, it's just a bit sad when you keep going for more than you should and then you start losing the time you older and retire!

Tyson was never the same after firing Kevin Rooney. Young Mike was very elusive defensively and worked the body. Post Rooney he became a headhunter and stood in front of his opponents.
After his "Dad" Cus died, he was never the same. About the time that viper Robin Givens got ahold of him right after Cus was in the ground. The old man lives....Mike never loses. Its that simple.

A worthy comment Phil, but I'm fairly sure Don King was behind the demise of Rooney as Tyson's trainer. People say Iron Mike lost his peek-a-boo style after he parted company with Rooney, but I can't agree. His defence was always intuitively solid throughout his career, and it was his slowing speed which enabled opponents to hit him - a result of too many drugs, alcohol, personal problems and no one (no D'Amato or Rooney) to stop a Tyson with too much money and no control. King destroyed Tyson by using him as his prime cash cow without enough care or guidance, who otherwise may have become the greateast HW of all-time.

If Cus had taken care of Mike until the end, I think he would have retired undefeated. Good to see that in the end, Tyson was able to turn his life around and regain balance and self respect. Only great men can do that,after suffering so much loss in such a short time. Good job sir!!!

Tyson was amazing in his prime...but after his first 4 losses to very good opponents (Douglas, Holyfield x2 and Lewis) he seemed to have lost the will to fight..almost as if he was just fighting not to lose. Great career overall.

When was Tyson's prime? And how long did it last? Because the likes of Lewis and holyfield were in their prime for atleast 10years. Tyson was a flash in the pan. He never had a "prime" he looked exciting but that's about it
Buster Douglas was the big surprise, I will never forget the shock of seeing buster fighting back and dominating the fight when everyone else looked beaten before they entered the arena.
Lewis was a class act. Danny Williams was quite well-known in Britain at the time but I'm sure he'd admit himself would never have beaten Tyson in his prime. Great attitude though and he went there to win and took Tyson on from the start of the fight. Game fighter and a nice guy as well.
Been watching a lot of Tyson videos lately, all his wins from day1 and on and I got to say, every single loss... he didn't look like "Iron" Mike Tyson. I don't know what was going on with him in his personal life or training, but from the first loss to the 6th, there were merely spurts or flashes of the champ. He didn't look like the complete package he had been up to that first loss.
Absolutely. He was astonishingly good in his prime and the Tyson losses were all through another man who didnt move anymore, didnt have self control and didnt have any plan when things went wrong. Plus he just looked plain lost at times. The biting of Holyfield's ears kinda said it all, what mind state he had got into. But glad to see in old age he is quite a charismatic and still fit man with no more axes to grind.
Mike Tyson basically hung on to the game way to long, just like many other prized fighters, his quickness had left him. Don King robbed him of all his riches and took advantage of him, and that was so sad.

However I wonder if at his best and if he’d never gone to prison if he’d have beaten Holyfield or Bowe the 92 and 93 versions? Tyson alway had trouble with bigger opponents with good boxing skills and guys who were not afraid of him. Buster showed up, Evander wasn’t afraid of anyone, and Lennox was one of the best of all time.
The only thing Holifield lacked in his arsenal was true knockout power. Other than that, he was a complete fighter. He might not knock you out, but he would beat the sh*t out of you, lol!
Until Holyfield fought James Toomey that is. Everyone has their nemesis and for Holyfield, Toomey was surely it. Its the only fight when Holyfield looked well beaten, apart maybe he was in trouble a lot against Lennox Lewis at times too in fight 1. But you gotta love his phenomenal will power and fighting instinct and he is a great guy!

No head movement,no tight space fluidity. Mike was an animal in the 80's.. Did not see anybody around then.
Like with Michael Jordan, having lived through Tyson's greatest, it is hard to describe exactly how dominating he was considered and how much everyone talked about him and followed his every fight. He was the last boxer to be 'water cooler'; talk the next day. One of those once in a lifetime dominating figures.

I was in the Catskill training camp Tyson used throughout his most prolific periods in the late 70s and early 80s, i wasn’t a sparring partner I was a painter and decorator. I found Mike to be friendly and approachable and he would take time out from training and ask me questions about paints and wallpaper
The sad part of the Lewis/Tyson fight was that not only did Lewis have to fight Tyson, he had to fight Eddie Cotton as well. Cotton was a HUGE Tyson fan and had really hoped that this fight would be Tyson's comeback. Of course this didn't happen. Even George Foreman who was giving guest commentary openly said that this was the case.
i loved how buster just squared up to tyson as in a real fight he had nothing to lose. Buster said in a interview he didn’t care if he died in the ring.

Evander was dipping low, coming upwards from the knees in a straight up motion to get in the clinch. Mike did get a massive cut over his right eye, right in the fat of the right eyelid hood from the butting. It was the right strategy for sure in the sense of smothering Mike and his power. Mike being a peekaboo fighter built a lot of momentum from side to side head movement and coming inwards at the same time with good footwork to get in short and land hard punches from outside angles because of the side to side motion and quickly getting off line with is feet to match the angle of punches. Evander really smothered Mike by coming forward as Mike was coming forward and clinching from down low to throw off the cadence Mike has. Evander was matching the forward march Mike attacked with. Evander without question butted with his head, whether it was intentional or not, it did happen because Evander did use a get low, come up clinch strategy imo
His mentor was the only one that really loved him and cared about him the most when he died everybody turned on him and started taking advantage of the money and little by little that’s what broke Mike Tyson down.
The first fight between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield was an all time classic. I think Holyfield just out boxed him in that one. But that being said, Mike Tyson only lost 6 fights. Very impressive career!
Out of those 20 years of boxing - he was in jail for 3 years for rape - in jail for 9 months for assault - and banned from boxing for the ear biting for 15 months
3 of those in last couple of years of his career that had been going on 20 years. Like many others he was just clinging on for paydays and it was sad to see. 5 of his 6 defeats came afters being in jail and 4 years out the ring, anybody who makes out that wouldn't affect any top HW has a hole in their head.
Big guys with skill who fought back gave him problems. When that happened, he didn't have a Plan B. He was lost without Cus D'amato and Kevin Rooney. Douglas exposed him. In his prime, he would not have beaten Holyfield or Lewis.

Tyson was 5'10" with a short reach so most were big guys to him and in the 80's/90s plenty had good skill. Berbick tried to fight him and lost as did Bruno. Not many were more skilful than Spinks and even an old Holmes, they got obliterated. Ruddock fought well but was beaten x2 post Douglas, Stewart was a big puncher who'd only lost to Holyfield giving him hell he was out in 1. You could say Lewis lost to anybody who found his jaw with a big counter or Holyfield lost to anybody who could avoid his head but that isn't stritcly true, neither is. the notion that Tyson lost every time someone fought back, just a complete myth no balanced boxing fan buys into.
@@SuperHns The referee ignored Holyfield's head butts to Tyson. You never hear about that, just about Mike biting his ear. It was Mike's retaliation for what Holyfield was doing to him. Holyfield is known as a dirty fighter.
Tyson is a beast at endurance, he only fell because he lost balance after getting a direct body shot, not because he was disoriented or hurt. You can see how he can truly stay standing in the final round, almost fell but made sure not to break
Man after he got rid of Kevin Rooney he was never the same, his fighting style was so off, he wasn't quick on his feet he just stood there, he didn't duck and dodge like he used to, he started to laze out on his training and went under bad influences, I'm sure he would have been defeated eventually, but if he kept his old style with Rooney and kept in shape I am sure he could have gone 60 or 70 maybe even 80 or so wins and zero losses
I think it didn’t help him getting rid of Rooney, but on February 11, 1990, it could have been Mike Tyson or Tyson Fury or even Muhammad Ali in his prime and James “Buster” Douglas was leaving with the Heavyweight Championship of the World and no one was going to change that.
The life of a boxer is like the life of a lion, in your prime you become Alpha and fell invincible but your biggest enemy is time because the next alpha has been waiting for his chance. Your fall from grace is extremely brutal, now if you survived then you are left injured and on your own without the title and glory.
Watching this video is like watching a nat geo documentary of a lion ruling the territory, every creature scared by his mere presence....And then as the lion starts to get old, new lions come in and take over the territory and the pride. When you said 'I hope you enjoyed this' I think the opposite is true. Mike Tyson was amazing and it is sad the politics, social pressures and financial abuse of his finances had him fighting well past his 'best before' date. If he had the opportunity to do it all over again I'm guessing he wouldn't have married his gold digger wife, he wouldn't have gone to prison, he would have hired financial consultants OUTSIDE of the boxing industry and he would have retired much earlier with a brighter future, socially, and financially.
He was a great fighter till he wasn't. All of the predictable excuses.... When you are a true HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP, it's because you have command over you life, intellectually, emotionally, physically, financially. You are your own CHAMPION in all facets. You don't need one excuse let alone a warehouse full of them. When you are a TRUE CHAMPION you don't play the victim card.
Whereas Lewis toyed with him like a cat toys with a mouse, prolonging the torure until he got bored with it and went in for the kill. He could have taken out Tyson in an earlier round, but after Tyson had told Lewis he was "going to eat his children", Lewis was going to show no mercy and wanted to see him bleed and suffer before he finished him off with a brutal right and a contemptuous push to the canvas.
As a master myself of martial arts... and growing up watching this legend from beginning to end of boxing career was really amazing to watch.... I learned a lot from his technique...
MIke never was the same after his jail break. And once he lost Cus Damato as a coach he lost his speed, discipline and mental control. A shadow of his original self when he had devestating movement and combinations no-one could handle.
I'm such a fan of Iron Mike it took nearly twenty years before I could watch the Douglas fight from a neutral stand point it was only then that I was able to see the masterpiece of a fight that Douglas had that night. The last combo was a work of art because Douglas had to change leads mid combo inorder to stay in range as Mike stumbled across the ring.
Wayman Johnson, absolutely! I think many fans don't give Douglas the credit he deserves for that fight. In my mind the real Iron Mike has only been beaten by 2 boxers, Douglas and Holyfield.
@@whatitisnt. true, he initially fought bums, can't disagree but that's fairly standard practice with young boxers. Tyson did then go on to beat (ie. destroy) all the top heavyweights of that era. I too used to think Iron Mike was over-hyped but only as I've aged did I begin to give Iron Mike the credit he deserved .... an incredible combination of speed and power, and illusive to hit.
Tyson's weakness has always been his stamina in fighting multiple rounds in a match; that's why his goal was to finish off his opponents as soon as possible.

if you look carefully tyson was guarding below the belt cause holyfield kept hitting below the belt at some times which gave holyfield the chance to hit tyson in the head since his arms weren't protecting it
Tyson was so fast and hit with such power and his training was smart and meticulous early on. Some of that even showed in his performances after 1995. Douglas' performance in that fight was inspiring, but while Tyson looked fit and ready to fight he did not appear focused at all on the things that worked for him in the past. Looking at these fights with Holyfield, I can't decide whether Tyson had lost some punching power or if Holyfield could take a punch better than all of his other opponents. Either way, Holyfield figured him out. For Tyson to have continued success boxing the way he had earlier in his career it would have taken intense conditioning and focus, which it appears he had lost. Mike Tyson was always my favorite, but Evander Holyfield was one hell of a boxer. I wish that fight happened in 1989.
Perhaps but Tyson made a habit of not fighting top contenders. He did not fight Witherspoon in the 1980s and in the 1990s managed to avoid Tua, McCall, Morrison, Vitali, Mercer, Rahman, Bowe, and Moorer. He continually ducked Lewis in the 1990s too having paid him off, after losing a court case, so he could fight Bruce Seldon instead.

Douglas was the epitome of the original "Rocky" message , in that, a good fighter who trains with focus can hang with a great fighter who is out of shape. And in that case, he also outsmarted him. That's why he won. And oh yeah...3:49...one of the best punches in the history of the game.
Every fightr is capable of one good fight, which is what happened, he went to the fight a clear underdog + his mother had recently died. It was enough to win him the fight,and make his mother proud.

Top 6 all time in my opinion.I like Ali @1 but Lennox or a young Larry could have been problematic. It was such a shame he didn't fight Klitschko a second time. He was scared. Klitschko was winning that first fight too bad they stopped it because of a cut.

@@sapereaude7115 Lennox and Klitschko never for twice. The first fight ended due to a nasty cut over klitschko's eye which resulted in a TKO. All three judges had Klitschko up on their fight cards. Lennox Lewis retired shortly after because he knew in a rematch he would lose to Vladimir Klitschko. Lennox Lewis would back everybody up with his long job but he struggled with that since Klitschko was taller and had an equally long Jab. Like I said the dude was scared to fight him again

I lost track of Mike Tyson after losing to Holyfield the first time. I overheard about Tyson's biting scandal in the Holyfield 2 match but never knew it was TWO bites until now. After 2 bites I thought Tyson would receive such a hefty suspension that he'd just go ahead and retire. As much as I disliked Tyson after the biting in the fight, I'd prefer that he just retired instead of going out the sad way that he did against McBride.

In that ear biting incident, Tyson shamed himself and the values of boxing as a sport. His career spiraled out of control thereafter. I remember going from great admiration for Tyson to detesting him after that incident. I saw him for what he was, a thug. But I know he's a changed man now, and I'm sure he regrets his actions now.
Buster Douglas lost his mother 11 days before the Tyson fight and he was in training camp, he didn't morn her death because he was so focused. This drove Buster to not fear Mike Tyson at all, Mike Tyson even said he noticed how Buster didn't seem phased and this actually unsettled Mike. Buster's best performance by far.

While the loss to Buster Douglas certainly affected the aura and mystique of Iron Mike, the first loss to Holyfield to me was the one that really broke the image of the invincible Iron Mike Tyson. The loss to Douglas can be attributed to Tyson not taking the fight seriously and was not really prepared, so that was more of a mental loss, but the fight with Holyfield was truly a fight he lost in the ring, as well as the fight with Lewis. The last two L's were just due to a fighter showing his age and clinging on too long.

Been watching a lot of Tyson videos lately, all his wins from day1 and on and I got to say, every single loss... he didn't look like "Iron" Mike Tyson. I don't know what was going on with him in his personal life or training, but from the first loss to the 6th, there were merely spurts or flashes of the champ. He didn't look like the complete package he had been up to that first loss.
Absolutely. He was astonishingly good in his prime and the Tyson losses were all through another man who didnt move anymore, didnt have self control and didnt have any plan when things went wrong. Plus he just looked plain lost at times. The biting of Holyfield's ears kinda said it all, what mind state he had got into. But glad to see in old age he is quite a charismatic and still fit man with no more axes to grind.

I was in the Catskill training camp Tyson used throughout his most prolific periods in the late 70s and early 80s, i wasn’t a sparring partner I was a painter and decorator. I found Mike to be friendly and approachable and he would take time out from training and ask me questions about paints and wallpaper

No wonder they avoided Holyfield at the peak. Tyson was briefly devastating, but, when he lost the snap, it turned to desperation or disillusionment.
The sad part of the Lewis/Tyson fight was that not only did Lewis have to fight Tyson, he had to fight Eddie Cotton as well. Cotton was a HUGE Tyson fan and had really hoped that this fight would be Tyson's comeback. Of course this didn't happen. Evander was dipping low, coming upwards from the knees in a straight up motion to get in the clinch. The first fight between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield was an all time classic. I think Holyfield just out boxed him in that one. But that being said, Mike Tyson only lost 6 fights. Very impressive career!

You could say Lewis lost to anybody who found his jaw with a big counter or Holyfield lost to anybody who could avoid his head but that isn't stritcly true, neither is. the notion that Tyson lost every time someone fought back, just a complete myth no balanced boxing fan buys into.

Man after he got rid of Kevin Rooney he was never the same, his fighting style was so off, he wasn't quick on his feet he just stood there, he didn't duck and dodge like he used to, he started to laze out on his training and went under bad influences, I'm sure he would have been defeated eventually, but if he kept his old style with Rooney and kept in shape I am sure he could have gone 60 or 70 maybe even 80 or so wins and zero losses

The life of a boxer is like the life of a lion, in your prime you become Alpha and fell invincible but your biggest enemy is time because the next alpha has been waiting for his chance. When you said 'I hope you enjoyed this' I think the opposite is true. Mike Tyson was amazing and it is sad the politics, social pressures and financial abuse of his finances had him fighting well past his 'best before' date. If he had the opportunity to do it all over again I'm guessing he wouldn't have married his gold digger wife, he wouldn't have gone to prison, he would have hired financial consultants OUTSIDE of the boxing industry and he would have retired much earlier with a brighter future, socially, and financially.

Douglas and Hollyfield actually lifted Tyson off the canvas with some of the body blows. Unbelievable.

He could have taken out Tyson in an earlier round, but after Tyson had told Lewis he was "going to eat his children", Lewis was going to show no mercy and wanted to see him bleed and suffer before he finished him off with a brutal right and a contemptuous push to the canvas.

That Douglas fight was ridiculous... Mike wasn't himself that fight. The slow count!!! And the KO.... I was beyond upset and shocked.
Tyson might have known that his mother died and wasn't feeling his normal rage. Douglas just had his mother die and had abnormal rage.
MIke never was the same after his jail break. And once he lost Cus Damato as a coach he lost his speed, discipline and mental control. A shadow of his original self when he had devestating movement and combinations no-one could handle.

I'm such a fan of Iron Mike it took nearly twenty years before I could watch the Douglas fight from a neutral stand point it was only then that I was able to see the masterpiece of a fight that Douglas had that night. The last combo was a work of art because Douglas had to change leads mid combo inorder to stay in range as Mike stumbled across the ring.
Wayman Johnson, absolutely! I think many fans don't give Douglas the credit he deserves for that fight. In my mind the real Iron Mike has only been beaten by 2 boxers, Douglas and Holyfield.
He initially only fought bums which first made him a celebrity. The real contenders showed who Tyson really was, over hyped and substandard

if you look carefully tyson was guarding below the belt cause holyfield kept hitting below the belt at some times which gave holyfield the chance to hit tyson in the head since his arms weren't protecting it
Tyson was so fast and hit with such power and his training was smart and meticulous early on. Some of that even showed in his performances after 1995. Douglas' performance in that fight was inspiring, but while Tyson looked fit and ready to fight he did not appear focused at all on the things that worked for him in the past. Looking at these fights with Holyfield, I can't decide whether Tyson had lost some punching power or if Holyfield could take a punch better than all of his other opponents. Either way, Holyfield figured him out. For Tyson to have continued success boxing the way he had earlier in his career it would have taken intense conditioning and focus, which it appears he had lost. Mike Tyson was always my favorite, but Evander Holyfield was one hell of a boxer. I wish that fight happened in 1989.

Perhaps but Tyson made a habit of not fighting top contenders. He did not fight Witherspoon in the 1980s and in the 1990s managed to avoid Tua, McCall, Morrison, Vitali, Mercer, Rahman, Bowe, and Moorer. He continually ducked Lewis in the 1990s too having paid him off, after losing a court case, so he could fight Bruce Seldon instead.

Douglas was the epitome of the original "Rocky" message , in that, a good fighter who trains with focus can hang with a great fighter who is out of shape. And in that case, he also outsmarted him. That's why he won. And oh yeah...3:49...one of the best punches in the history of the game.
Every fightr is capable of one good fight, which is what happened, he went to the fight a clear underdog + his mother had recently died.
It was enough to win him the fight,and make his mother proud.
When Douglas himself talked about that fight and the events around it, it was amazing to hear.

Lennox Lewis retired shortly after because he knew in a rematch he would lose to Vladimir Klitschko. Lennox Lewis would back everybody up with his long job but he struggled with that since Klitschko was taller and had an equally long Jab. Like I said the dude was scared to fight him again

I lost track of Mike Tyson after losing to Holyfield the first time. I overheard about Tyson's biting scandal in the Holyfield 2 match but never knew it was TWO bites until now. After 2 bites I thought Tyson would receive such a hefty suspension that he'd just go ahead and retire. As much as I disliked Tyson after the biting in the fight, I'd prefer that he just retired instead of going out the sad way that he did against McBride.
I grew up watching boxing with my brothers and remember clearly Mike bites people lost respect for great Mike. ☹️

I remember going from great admiration for Tyson to detesting him after that incident. I saw him for what he was, a thug. But I know he's a changed man now, and I'm sure he regrets his actions now.
