@@JorisKoolen Yes, since the States are a bunch of mini countries in a country trench coat. There's no national sales tax; honestly wish there was a standard one, so buying things isn't a mess of "oh this state has this sales tax, this one doesn't."
Props to the designer; it really does resemble a real life Excavator. It easily beats out any of Lego's older minifig scale attempts. $70 is quite a lot but it'd be an amazing set for any Lego city. It could easily be a centerpiece of any Construction site MOC.
The build is honestly great. Really clean and elegant yet functional. City might be intended for kids but I can totally see this set appeal to a wider audience.
What a great design. Nice balance between the "scale model" and "LEGO-y" feel. I always liked LEGO's construction vehicles. The price isn't toooo bad... if I had some extra cash I'd pick it up
Assuming the main part of the excavator isn't nearly flush against the chassis, then the ball joint probably provides an extra little bit of movement to get the bucket as close to the ground as possible. The usual turn-table elements lego uses for this type of vehicle might not have been enough for this model
Gotta say, I like this at $55 much more so than the semi truck at $100, I feel there's much more play potential than the truck, it looks big and chonky, it looks like what an excavator should look like, much better than any other Lego City one there has been in the past which looked more like something you'd rent for home use as opposed to "Now this is for a construction company!" Also if you don't need to be a first adopter you can wait until this drops to 20% off and get it for $44, which makes it even more appealing.
Huge fan of this set. Needed it for a construction MOC. You are right about how strong it is for play. My 4 year old son has played with it a to since I got it. He has broken just about every vehicle we’ve made and he has yet to break that one.
This is without a doubt the best playset excavator they've ever done! So detailed and (most importantly) realistic. My only gripe is that the middle joint on the arm has too little movement, you can't open or close the arm enough imo. But it's still great looking!
How is nobody talking about the use of an elephant head in place of the "CAT" logo of real world construction vehicles? That's an awesome little detail imo
I don't own City sets, nor do I have a Lego city (beside Ninjago), and I am not even a fan of construction stuff but having said that, I am really impressed by this set, it look really perfect!
It looks great and I'm definitely going to get it, and maybe the Mobile Crane too, which also looks incredible, BUT I'm gonna wait to get them on sale. I feel like full price is a bit much, despite how good these things look. Also, I'm so hyped that Lego has made an excavator for City that doesn't use that same bucket that they typically use.
Looks great (so much has changed since the last City digger set! And I thought that looked really back then), and really impressed by tread-friction mechanism. Earlier, I was listening to just the audio of the video and when I listened to the description of the thing, I just imagined that the tires extended out of the tread and touched the ground, but hidden much better than the previous 'cheater wheels' (and so Jang didn't call it cheater wheels). But now I'm watching the vid again with visuals, and what do I know, they are not! I imagine it'll come in handy when making armor/treaded vehicle type MOCs going forward. Thanks for the review!
Oh, this is a nice one! The shaping and design are really good, and so are the play features. I'm gonna have to get one at some point. I love City Construction stuff.
Thanks for your review as always, Jang! The digger looks great, and it's a good colour change from the usual yellow construction equipment. Here in Australia this set is very pricey, depending on which stores you go to it's around $80-90 bucks! I'll definitely pick this up if I find it discounted. P.S. The persimmon colour of the minifigure torsos is extremely close to many of the workshirts mining companies in Australia use!
i really like this set, i may just go an buy it, seems very animation friendly without any modifications as well which is rare for a lego set. i know they aren't made for that but it's nice to see
I wonder how heavy some 2x2 anti-stud pieces would be to cover up the "not camera friendly" side. Pretty solid set. Swapping out the blue for grey would be pretty easy.
Lego City has really improved since the last time I purchased it in 2013. I now only buy Star Wars and minifig factory but their creativity has definitely improved over the years.
It's really neat although I would've liked more yellow on it. I had lots of construction playsets as a kid, although trains were my biggest thing and still are.
Why did they stop providing the rubber feet for the treads? The legacy thunder raider came with this and that made table/wood floor movement much better
Maybe I just haven't been looking at Lego City sets that much lately, but is it just me or is this set very realistic? Like, really well done. I like it a lot. The only thing that looks out of proportion or hard to imagine as real is the digger arm itself. I love the engine, I love the detailing, I love the colour choice.
Is this the first time a City excavator has had a proper bucket piece (instead of repurposing the wide, front-loader bucket)? The whole arm looks "40% City / 60% Technic" to be honest!
I heavily customized mine, i even cut, sanded and super glued peices to make it look better. When the 2x2 inverted tiles come out in orangey yellow colour I'm gonna get a few and swap them out foe the ones with the anti stud
I'd honestly get this and i don't even have use for it apart from putting it on display, i don't have a city built lol. I would gotten the pure Technic version they did previously, i think it was at a similar scale to this but i just never got around to it. This excavator being as functional and appealing as it is definitely on my radar, same goes for the Lego Delivery Truck. City's been really good this year loved the return to prison island too.
This is possibly a new trend i. LEGO, detailed but expensive vehicles along with more standard ones and I'm all here for it. This excavator is just amazing, if I had this when I was a kid I would've actually went touch grass and dig it up but the old diggers were so barebone that I didn't like them at all. Funnily enough, I actually tried to make a realistic digger in that age but miserably failed multiple times, I stuck myself using the classic pieces they used on City diggers for years and that was quite limiting.
I thought the same about the immobilised joint. Then I did some research and it seems that heavy duty excavators are constructed exactly that way, with curved but stiff first section of the arm. My respect for the designer increased.
European prices sound a bit higher usually, but to be fair, when they say 55 Euros, it always means 55 Euros, taxes are included
seen it in multiple shops under 50 euros already. here = netherlands
Wait, US has to pay taxes ON TOP of the mentioned prices?

@@JorisKoolen Yep, our entire economy is filled with deceptive practices.
@@JorisKoolen i think so. afaik its standard to show prices before tax in the US, even in like, physical shops. idk why, its a weird country

this is spectacular for a lego city set, it almost brings the speed champions level of detail.
This looks awesome. We need a big ol’ dump truck to match.
Friction aside, that is interesting that it uses a ball joint. I wouldn't have expected that

That crane-elephant logo is brilliant! LEGOs graphic design work is always so interesting to me.
Yes, they are doing construction sets again, i love the smoothness of the build
The aft of this crane is super nicely shaped. Looks plesant to build
Really nice looking. I like the technic pieces mixed in to make it functional
I gotta say, Lego City designers really stepped up their game this year.... probably trying to catch up to Friends department 😁

Best part of this set is the use of tires in the treads. Masterpiece engineering
I actually like that the ball joint is stiff, now you can drive it around your city like a car.
Really nice looking unit.... very realistic looking for its size.
Huge fan of this set. Needed it for a construction MOC. You are right about how strong it is for play. My 4 year old son has played with it a to since I got it. He has broken just about every vehicle we’ve made and he has yet to break that one.
Now, this is an excavator. Since I have my owns I won't be getting this one, but the smaller ones serve the job in my world.
Jang thank you for this review! No one else is talking about the treads not having a cheater wheel! That info was super hard to find.
This is without a doubt the best playset excavator they've ever done! So detailed and (most importantly) realistic.

Great set, looks really good. Will buy this when it goes on Sale. Would Love to see you also review the big City Crane (60409)
I don't own City sets, nor do I have a Lego city (beside Ninjago), and I am not even a fan of construction stuff but having said that, I am really impressed by this set, it look really perfect!
I’m pretty much the same only I have some older City stuff.
Love the shaping and part usage around the rear! Very nice design all around.
Lego have smashed these city sets out the park. Especially this and the crane. City is back with a bang and about time to!
The build almost looks like a scale toy, not a Lego set. Really well done
Such an amazing set!!

That, ladies and gentlemen, is a thing of beauty.

I like how well the functions are covered up
i really like this set, i may just go an buy it, seems very animation friendly without any modifications as well which is rare for a lego set. i know they aren't made for that but it's nice to see
Those are the most effective caterpillar treads I’ve seen on a LEGO set yet
Looks great!! I can’t wait to find this one near me 🙂

This has me super excited for that extra large mobile crane that's supposed to be out soon. Legos definitely gonna have my money this year!!😅😁
This might be the most perfect Lego set I've ever seen
A neat-looking set. If I was a kid, I'd absolutely love this.
My wife bought this for my birthday, its a great model (although i want to upgrade some of the linkages now)
some toy shops sell it for about 45 euros in the netherlands now, which is a lot better, and Jang I love your honest reviews!!
Neat looking excavator, wasn't expecting it to have a fake motor
This one’s is really great! I’ve got an older one and this blows it out of the water 👏👏
That’s a really quality looking build for Lego city these days.
My inner 8-year-old is really digging this, pardon the pun. I would have loved this as a kid
It's really neat although I would've liked more yellow on it. I had lots of construction playsets as a kid, although trains were my biggest thing and still are.
No one is going to mention the elephant in the room? Or maybe the cat? 😅
Why did they stop providing the rubber feet for the treads? The legacy thunder raider came with this and that made table/wood floor movement much better
This setup would work great for a LEGO stop-motion movie (The Return of Emmet…)
Looks epic awesome review jang 👍

Looks like a brilliantly designed set. I might consider getting it just for display, will most likely wait for a discount though
So fresh, so clean! Love it
This looks super fun to play with!
My little nephews would love this one.
This will complement very well with the Lego Bricklink Modular 910008.
I love it but will wait for a discount
Looks like a really good play set. I can see lots to do with this for customers
Coolest city set in a while!!!
Great set.
So not possible to get the arm into transport posistion?
Only to some extent. One may to remove the cross shaft over the blue pin and then the arm folds closer, but the upper actuator then disjoints.
Hey, this looks nice! I like the new pieces!
Reminds me of last years blue crane
Currently AUD$58 in Australia. Good deal 👌
Very good design!
I feel like this set will be on backorder its whole shelf life 😕
Can the bucket go below track level?
Such a good set, had to snag it last week!
I wish they came out with a smaller excavator set that includes a trailer for it and a pickup or worker van for it
beautiful set
Is this thing yellow or bright light orange?
Always great value.
Awesome set
Great video
Wow it looks good
Its glorious
nice
Dang that looks nice 👍
I was wondering if there was a cheater wheel. Good to see there is not.
Such an amaziiiiiiiiiiiiing set!!!!
Really Hope To See a Bigger Steam Roller From Lego City, If They Continue This Bigger Construction Theme!
3:17 this bothers me, for kids without a large parts selection i really think that added joint would make the play pattern a lot more fun
I paid 45 euro in the Netherlands 😊
I heavily customized mine, i even cut, sanded and super glued peices to make it look better. When the 2x2 inverted tiles come out in orangey yellow colour I'm gonna get a few and swap them out foe the ones with the anti stud
Ooh, that looks good. Only criticism for me is that it's a teethed scoop. I've worked a lot around excavator but always with smooth edged scoops.
Beautiful design with accurate scale. Having said that, I don't plan on buying it.
I'd honestly get this and i don't even have use for it apart from putting it on display, i don't have a city built lol.

im not in the excavator market, but this is a good build that fits the purpose very well
Im waiting for someone to motorize this one! Will be picking it up regardless though.
Its very overpriced, an equivalent of 77$ from where I'm from.
It looks really good, but the limited movement of the crane arm is very disappointing, especially that non-functional hinge joint in the middle.
I thought the same about the immobilised joint. Then I did some research and it seems that heavy duty excavators are constructed exactly that way, with curved but stiff first section of the arm. My respect for the designer increased.
I rarely care about these types of vehicles but idk
I dig it
