One of the earliest electric instruments, the tonewheel organ and its constant companion, the rotary speaker cabinet, have found their way into styles of music from the subtlest jazz to screaming rock and roll. Here are a few techniques to capture this dynamic instrument in all its glory.

The top horn seems like it contains two horns in a 180 degree angle. Infact it doesnt. One of them carries the sound from the tweeter, -the other one is a fake, -only serving as a balanceweight.

@@themilksnatcheruseless retard comment. @Ostesvinet, (din danske satan?) has a point. And it’s an important point! Why mic at 90 degrees if there’s only one horn? If there was 2, perfectly sensible..

As far as I am aware one of the horns in the rotary cabinet is a dummy to help balance the other when spinning. Does this change the 90o mic placement in the first example?

Sorry man I hat to be a critic, but so much wrong here. First of all there's no way we're listening to the lapel mic. That sounds like the camera mic , but this is the Audio Technica TH-cam channel so you'd think they'd do that right.
As others pointed out, The Leslie isn't moving when we're watching the organ play. I don't know what voodoo is going on there.
Not important but funny, I caught the 8' drawbar cut out on C# at 2:57. Actutually every time.
But yeah the most important thing is the trouble taken for that graphic of db per mic and it's just wrong. Organists know this, but this is supposed to teach and the teaching's not right. Sure that mic setup works, but again. the information is just wrong.

I see no response to 'one of the horns in the rotary cabinet is a dummy'. Of course this is true but not known by many. An engineer should know this however.

2:30 the Leslie isn't even operational. LOL you must be recording a different Leslie or using a neo vent.

also noticed this .. and i thought ok maybe they did the actual recording with a different leslie in a seperate room .. but you might be right with the neo vent or similar digital effect since somehow it just doesn't sound like the real thing in the video.. :/
but still some good advice regarding wind noises and the off-center position of the rotors.
      - and if space is limited and you can only record through the side louvres of the leslie, do not choose the side where the amp and motor is or you will pick up plenty of AC hum.
