I'm 37 year's old I learned in 2020 that I have a green thumb and passionate about gardening, I've been watching your video's since then, you truly have inspired me on my best day's and my worst, THANK YOU Roots and Refuge
When I saw this video I said out loud, "Yay, another harvest video!" and hubby said, "That's like an 'unboxing video' for gardeners, isn't it." lol! Hope y'all had a lovely day.
It is! Do you make your own harvest videos? I do. Winters here are long and cold so I watch a lot of harvest content then. Might be just tormenting myself too, lol.
When I was young, I would go to the row of carrots Dads garden. I would pick one, give it a quick rinse from the hose, and chomp into it. The taste of carrots straight from the garden reminds me of Dad.
The part where you talk about your video from 5 years ago, picking the same things, but how different your life was then, like getting ready to go to your husband's late mom, and how much can change in 5 years time, but also how much stays the same... That caught me out of nowhere - got tears in my eyes! So true.
This was the first spot I could actually comment on because there were no comment sections on the screen. I have lots of tomatoes but none are red yet.
Love using baking soda and vinegar instead of harmful products for our health. Thank you for helping more ppl learn about simple, healthy and effective cleaning solutions 💗
I roast all my tomatoes to make spaghetti sauce… I just put them in a 425 degree oven and roast until skins start to turn black. Then I pull off the skins and drain the seeds and immersion blend them. I’ll add onions, peppers, zucchini or what ever I have an abundance of at the time 😊
Happy 4th! My little is a firework baby so we celebrate the 4th and her today! Its alwyas tons of fun and she thinks the fireworks are just for her! Lol she turned 5 todya and is my youngest of our 5 kids. Hope you all have a blessed, fun and safe 4th!
Sweet Jess, Nice harvests on the peppers, and small tomatoes. I remember making pasta with one can of tomato sauce, and spices in order to feed my son, and myself 29 years ago. The pasta cost me 39 cents, and the small can of tomato sauce was 36 cents. Groceries were tight, my 1st husband, and I were divorced, I was struggling to pay rent, utilities, and the debt we were left with. The things we do to make sure our children were fed, and had a warm bed to sleep in. I wouldn't give up that time of my life. I considered it a true lesson from the good Lord. Happy Independence Day! Life is good!!! Now onto checking out your salsa recipe.
Been there done that! So glad you made it through and used it as a life lesson! That’s what I’ve also tried to do, and I think it’s made me a stronger person than the ones who tried to beat me down! They failed!
I have a newborn and I have not been as committed to my garden. But my garden is committed to me, I have so many volunteers this year. Cheers to the cucumber!! Happy 4th!
Happy Independence Day, Jess. From the bottom of my heart, thank you and Miah for all the inspiration you bring to us. You are helping so many of us become more independent!❤️🇺🇸🌻
I harvested a two pounder today myself! The whole dinner was raised, processed and grown by us! Pork and peppers, roasted tators, fried okra, and you know it...sliced mators. Good eatin'!
Oh my...chocolate gravy is something of a special occasion thing...I've lived all my life in the deep south..never had it until we moved to north Alabama....its still a special occasion thing and awesome with a side of southern crispy bacon...a perfect balance of sweet and salty...js
Rolly pollies were eating my cucumbers, it took me protecting the seedlings with a plastic cup until they were big enough to survive on their own to be successful. Third time was the charm!
One of my garden traditions is to grill a variety of sliced veggies, like eggplant, zucchini, long carrot slices, onions and peppers then make a big thick veggie hoagie . Top with garlic aioli or Italian dressing. Yum 🤤
The chocolate gravy memories!! I was sooo happy to see that! My husband is northern and always laughs when I speak about moms chocolate gravy. Well my oldest is now two year old and we are planning to make it for the first time this weekend and I’m excited to pass on that core childhood memory.
I LOVE your gardens!!! My gardens are my happy, peaceful place, especially since my Mom passed away last Spring. She and I shared a love of 'playing' in the dirt, so I feel closest to her in my gardens. And, she sends me a cooling breeze, now and then. I miss you, Mom! 🥰 Thank you, Jess, for continuing to bring my gardening memories with my Mom, alive, every day. 🥰🥰
You go mama bear! I look forward to your videos. I've been following you since the pandemic. You are such an encouragement to me. Your effervescent personality spurs me on to be a better gardener!!! Keep up the fabulous work!!!
That's one Big tomato! Enjoy you day! Happy Independence day!! I have tomatoes on plants! Up here in the north we run later but excited with the growth so far! Enjoy the fruits of your labors!!
I just made bread for the first time😂😂 A bit too much flour, rather dense. But scrumptious with butter and honey! Next time I will not use the whole amount of flour! There will be a next time❤❤❤
Love your videos. So enjoy the magnificence of your garden! How have you been feeling. A while back you were having some health issues. Have you resolved them? I hope so because you are such to delight to watch.
Hello Jess! Love you even from afar! . Thank you for all you are as a person and all that Roots & Refuge provides. Ever since watching your video on getting Lulu the dog, I named my kitten "Lulu"
Happy Independence Day, everyone! Remember: “Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” II Corinthians 3:17
Mustard gravy. My German Mom used German yellow mustard or Frenches. Mixed with milk, flour, salt & pepper. Drops of hot sauce for flavoring. Gravy over white mashed potatoes and hard boiled eggs. Topped with gravy. We loved this. You could Salt boil cut potatoes, drain off. Dryer potatoes if you like. Simple and quick meal. Love chocolate gravy. YUM Tomato 🍅 salad cuke salads are summer time food. Fabulous. Enjoy FROM SE MICHIGAN. Thank you soldiers for INDEPENDENCE DAY
My biggest tomato ever was about ten years ago. My boss’s ol’ fishing buddy would share with me tomato seedlings from an “Amish” Heirloom that had been in his family for years. It was a good, fairly prolific addition to my garden each year. One year, I followed the growth of what promised to be a monster tomato, and while still green, I fashioned a sling for that big boy, suspended from the sturdy tomato cage. I picked it one hot afternoon in August, raced into the kitchen and grabbed the scale. It topped out at a big 2 lbs. 14 oz. The interesting thing, though, That particular plant had only one other tomato, weighing it at 7 ounces.
Thanks for sharing your memories with us Jess. I especially like how you appreciate where you are now by saying you're "tomato rich". God sends us many blessings we just need to choose to see them.😊
You are the reason that I am growing a whole bed of a truck Shishito peppers lol well and the fact that my Mexican husband knows how to make them amazingly lol 5:36
💚 Happy 4th of July, Independence Day. I'm in the garden right now, planting petunias and Alyssum, a few squash and Marigolds. Love being in my garden and watching you in yours at the same time! I continue to be inspired by you, thanks so much. 💚
My salad consists of beet greens, Swiss chard, lemon basal, mixed salad greens from my garden. I also had pickled Eggs added. I made a strawberry syrup from strawberry tops and maple syrup. I did add store bought cheese and cherry tomatoes. Delicious 😋 here in Michigan these are the only harvest that is ready.
My husband and nephew and I love your salsa. We ran out last year but I hope I can make enough this year to hold us over. Why do I garden? I love getting my hands in the dirt but i also have a nephew that has such a high metabolic rate that growing food to feed him was necessary. And fun too. God gives good things to those who put their hands to the work.
I'm bringing in my mators by the basket load almost every day now! I love this time of year. While I wait for enough to do a canning session (I don't know if I'mma do sauce, salsa, or what first yet) I'll be canning up the 25 pounds of tators hub dug me this afternoon. I pop my mators in the freezer and it makes peeling such an easy task! Much better than that old blanching method, if you ask me! And for all the cherries, I just buzz them with my immersion blender. Works perfect!
What a perfect outfit for the day, so romantic too! Love the potential excitement of the jalapeño plant. For sure that little one didn't look Fish, so I'm hoping too. ❤all things variegated. I recall years where I've had to buy store bought tomatoes or go without. After spending so much for fresh, even on a sale, and then tasting them... After that I only bought jarred crushed tomatoes from Italy or Florida, on sale, but otherwise we just did without any form of tomato. 😂 Never weighed a single tomato before, only total usable fruit meat per plant, and even then only when I gardened in previous homes. Maybe some future year, if they are not such a horrible issue to grow here. Eventually. To where I don't dread thinking about grabbing gross large tomatoes hollowed out with corn earworms, or punctured to bitter from stinkbugs, I'll try weighing the biggest!
Chocolate gravy! My sister and I used to spend the night at our grandparents' house all the time and we always made grandma make biscuits and chocolate gravy. Of course, she didn't mind, her sweet too was bigger than either of ours lol.
I think my largest was a Mortgage Lifter last year and that was only about 1.5 lbs, mostly because I hate cat-faced tomatoes and have been known to pick the bloom off. This year, I've got my eye on a Vintage Wine that is huge and a Dark Galaxy which came from a bloom the size of a dandelion - crazy!
Love your videos so much. You are so inspiring to me. My daughter found you first & then shared with me. I wish I could come hang out with you & learn more. Some day maybe I will be able to go to a homesteading event. God Bless you & Thank you for all you do

Every time I go into the garden, I see the water system that my dad and I installed. He went home to God in 2021.

Oh my goodness! I’m so jealous!! I miss homegrown vegetables!!
Food prep/ideas for preserving and using the harvest are my favorite this time of the year. Thank you!!
Thank you Jess .I do look forward to your videos daily .You didn’t have to today ..but I’m grateful. Happy Independence Day to you and your family.
