Dr. Pepper reminds me of my grandmother. It was the only soft drink she drank and subsequently purchased. Whenever we visited her your options for a refreshing beverage were water, buttermilk or Dr. Pepper, needless to say my siblings and cousins all acquired a taste for Dr. Pepper.
I so remember as a little Child hearing the Commercial, "Your a Pepper, be a Pepper, drink Dr. Pepper" and how happy I thought the Adults looked:)!!! And if only we could find the "original recipe" back in 1885 and what that must have tasted like, I wonder?? Thanks for sharing this fun part of Americana:)!!!
Dr Pepper was always one of my favorite sodas. I discovered coffee late in life, at the age of 31 and once I discovered that, my soda consumption went from 2 or 3 12oz cans a day, to one 12-pack a year. I buy one 12 pack of Dr Pepper at the beginning of summer and treat myself to one after I mow the lawn. It really hits the spot. Love it.
In 2009, Kiss's bass player, frontman and lead singer Gene Simmons became a TV commercial spokesman for Dr. Pepper. A year later, he did it again on Super Bowl Sunday. Amazing!!!

check out the Dublin soda company in that building now. theyre awesome! You can still get the original formula in bottles w/ pure cane sugar but those 'dublin dr. peppers they had were good b/c they came from the old bottling plant.

My staple snack everyday after high school volleyball and track practice in the mid/late 70s was a big 9 oz bag of nacho cheese flavored Doritos (which cost $0.45) and a 16 oz glass bottle of Dr. Pepper. To this day it's still my favorite snack combination but my aging digestive system will no longer let me eat chips and drink soda like a 15 y/o lol.😆
Amazing........a 9 ounce bag of name brand snack food back in the 70s we were 45 cents. Now it's over 4 bucks. Today I wouldn't give you a dime for it.

Yrs ago, they didn’t sell Dr. Pepper apparently in Tennessee and, I guess in some areas and down south. I know you didn’t see it in a lot of restaurants and, we really didn’t see it in the grocery stores when, we went there for vacation in the summer. That’s how, I first was a where of Mr. Pibb. Eventually, they started selling it everywhere.
I always drink mine room temperature unless I’ve been out in the fields in mid summer and are just parched, then I have just a few bottles in the fridge for when I need something cold. The fizz is better at room temps and it has a richer taste in my opinion.

Dale Thelander I think I know why you remember the soda pop like Dr. Pepper and Coke for that matter having a stronger and full flavor. In the 1950s and before the Soda Fountains had there own syrup right at the food counter so you could ask for another shot of Syrup in your Dr. Pepper or Coke if you wanted a stronger drink.For the past forty years or so All soda drinks come pre- mixed if in cans or bottles .At fast food restaurants the dispensing machine measures only so much syrup per drink. The industry makes these sodas only strong enough that you will give them a fairly good flavor rating. the less syrup the more money they make. Also the flavor of Soda changed some back in the late 1970s when the Soda Makers started using Corn Syrup instead of the Cane Sugar, the syrup was cheaper.
I remember Dr. Pepper from my trips down south in the early 60s. My dad worked for Ben Franklin five and ten cent store and would take the family along with him when he traveled down south. He generally spent most of his time in small towns so we'd stay at a local motel somewhere. And of course there'd be a cola machine nearby. My favorite was Dr Pepper along with whatever kinds weren't available to me in my home state of Pa. Always looked forward to summer and our next trip down south, and Dr Pepper of course.
@@dalethelander3781 yes it was. My dad spent his career with them until he retired In 85. Oddly enough there was a Ben Franklin store about 1/2 mile away and he only worked there once . He was a store opening superintendent who basically traveled up and down the east coast setting up new stores and remodeling older ones. Spent between 2 to 5 weeks usually at whatever location he,was assigned. Most of his territory was between Connecticut and South Carolina. During the summer he'd take us down the shore (Wildwood, NJ )for a week and then somewhere down south for a couple of weeks. Spent a lot of time in motels. He'd take us to local Civil War battlefields and museums. My brother wore blue and I had grey(civil war hats). When I was about 16 or so he'd take me with him and I'd usually wind up working there for the store owner while my dad was there. Just setting up display units and unloading merchandise. Yep, I certainly remember Ben Franklin.

Dr. Pepper has been my drink of choice since I was six or seven years old. Every time I went out to eat with my parents, I would always ask if they had it. It's been my favorite for most of my life and I doubt that's going to change.
Cases of 24 small bottles used to be $2.00 wholesale so you could sell them for a dime a piece in the machines until the early 70s. We had a coke machine in the game room when l grew up in Dallas and family in Waco. We'd go to the Dublin building several times a year. l loved it.
Great video! As a kid, in the early 60's, Dr Pepper was the only soft drink my father would drink. My mother wouldn't touch it, she thought it tasted like prune juice! I still drink Dr Pepper to this day, although I usually go for the low calorie version. I never did acquire a taste for Coke of Pepsi.
Dublin Texas ,for a while , used to produce and sell the original Dr. Pepper in glass bottles until a lawsuit with Dr. Pepper put an end to it . The two distinctions of the original were that it was sweetened only with Imperial pure cane sugar and had the original prune juice as one of the flavors , where current drink uses raspberry juice , as I have read . Before the 2020 fiasco , one could find ( in limited quantity) contemporary Dr. Pepper with real sugar rather than corn syrup , which is standard in most sodas .
@@biketech60 It wasn't a lawsuit that ended Dublin Dr Pepper. Dr Pepper Snapple Group (now Keurig Dr Pepper) pulled their franchise rights for trans-shipping. Selling their products outside of their distribution territory. Dublin made the argument that no other bottler was producing pure cane sugar Dr Pepper so they were not in violation of their franchise agreement (I happen to agree with them) but the parent company didn't see it that way. Also, Dr Pepper does not now, nor did it ever, contain prune juice.
Back in the day when we played poker using a lot of wild cards, five of a kind best any straight flush, including a royal flush. I guess "house rules" have to be set when playing poker with wild cards.

Back in 1970 when I was in high school, I got a part time job at a Safeway grocery store. The store manager had a poker game at his house almost every Saturday night after the store closed at 9 pm. (The grocery stores were closed on Sunday back then in Maryland.) They played many poker games using a lot of wild cards at times. I remember discussions about rather or not five of a kind beat a royal flush, so we voted, and we decided five of a kind beat a royal flush.

If you can find it made with real sugar it just tastes better. I always thought it was a little smoother. It was easy to find when I lived in TX, but a little harder to find in SC. But I get lucky every once in a while and grab it when I see it.
Also, in the mid 60’s my mother got a Dr Pepper cookbook at the fair, honestly. If you heat Dr Pepper it changes to a little spicy, that was the treat of hot Dr Pepper. You heat it and let it simmer a bit. One recipe was Dr Pepper Stew, it was surprisingly good and had that spicy taste. Someone stole that original cookbook, so I bought a recent version.
I use to like it hot with slices of orange and lemon in a punch bowl. We use to have it at skating and sledding parties when i was in junior high school.
Diet Dr Pepper is one of my favorite vices. But you’ll never catch me drinking it hot. 🤢 There’s a nifty reference to Dr. Pepper in the movie “Auntie Mame”, and in the movie “Blast from the Past”, Christopher Walken’s character makes hot Dr. Pepper.
I remember a Dr. Pepper commercial about 20 years ago with Garth Brooks. He sang, “Be you/do what you do/Dr. Pepper/Nothing better “. I really enjoyed that commercial. My favorite uncle always bought my sister and me “cold drinks “ when he and my aunt came to visit. I liked Dr. Pepper and that’s what he’d always get me. Mr Pibb was a remake of Dr. Pepper and they sued and had called it Pibb. North Carolina has Cheer wine and Wal mart has a Dr soda. But Pepsi has Dr pepper with Mt Dew. A lot of Cherry sodas. Love ❤️ Dr. Pepper and Cheerwine.
My first Boy Scout campout was in February and we were all might cold. The scoutmasters heated up a saucepan of hot Dr. Pepper for us. We had never heard of such and we didn't have any lemon. It was good and warm and made for a very unique memory. We had dandelion stew for the first time on that trip as well.
My 'goto" drink - 16oz glass, filled to the brim with ice, a double shot of vodka, fill with Dr. Pepper, stir & let sit for 5 minutes. Hoist it up & take a few sips and I'll bet you finish it before you put the glass down. 4 or 5 of those & I'm done for the evening.

I hope Dr. Pepper gets back to production of cane sugar sweetened soda as well as their usual corn syrup sweetened variety . Some prefer one , some the other . Sugar is lighter , and more refreshing when the weather is hot , IMO . San Antonio summers can be sweltering . Would be even better if they offered the original recipe version .
@@woodywoodard1049 Dublin Dr Pepper hasn't been around since 2012. Dr Pepper Corporate pulled their franchise rights for shipping their pure cane sugar Dr Pepper into other distributors territories. Ironically enough, a few years later Dr Pepper Corporate would roll out their own version of the original pure cane sugar Dr Pepper that you can find in stores today.
I always thought 'hot' Dr. Pepper was a joke from that Brendan Fraser movie. I was staining a deck out in the sun one summer and I had a bottle out in the direct sunlight. Needless to say it became super heated and the drink was pretty awesome.

Funny how there's a chain of restaurants called A&W (where the famous A&W root beer got its start) which was owned for many years by Yum Brands (Pizza Hut, KFC, Taco Bell) considering the fact that A&W root beer is made by the Dr Pepper company, but Yum Brands is actually the group of restaurant chains which were owned by Pepsi before it separated from Pepsi in 1997. Then in 2002 the combined Long John Silver's/A&W chain was bought by Yum Brands.
Oh those Dublin Dr Peppers. You can still buy them with cane sugar but they taste different than the Dublin DP did. When I would go to DFW I would come home by way of Stephenville to stop at the grocery and get cases of Dublin DP. You could only get them within so many miles of Dublin.
An interesting thing I have noticed with Dr. Pepper. I am a T-1 Diabetic and can't tell the difference in taste between regular Dr. Pepper and diet Dr. Pepper.
I LOVE Dr. Pepper and typically have a six pack in the fridge! I now live abroad in a few different countries and am always pleased when I find it in stores around the world. Unfortunately, they are expensive outside of the states. Luckily, I usually keep one in my pantry for those days when I gotta have a drink.
Nice video and pretty informative, but you could have included some other interesting tidbits, like Dr Pepper and 7up merged way back in the 60’s, I think. The Dr Pepper-7up headquarters building is this unusual green glass building in Dallas. There used to be Dr Pepper juice filled gum in the 80’-90’s, it was pretty good 👍. Also Dr Pepper lip gloss for the girls. Before Keurig bought DP-7up, Cadbury bought it and got it going in Europe. Also the Dr Pepper-7up Co. includes A&W, Canada Dry, Crush, Squirt, Snapple and a few others.
Interesting! thank you, RC! I never was a big pop fan, we grew up calling ig "pop" from Minnesota here. Maybe because we drank kool- aid, our family was petty good size, nine of us. Even when I went out on my own I never cared to much for it.
We called it "pop" in Chicago, too. I moved to Los Angeles and had to learn to call it "sew-da" to avoid being looked at sideways. Along with losing my "Chi-CAH-gah" accent.
I still drink Dr Pepper, but wish I could find the "made with suger" version instead of the high fructose corn syrup kind. It came in a mostly green and red can. I thought it tasted better, and a little more mellow. I could find it in Publix and Winn Dixie in Florida, and at Safeway in Maryland, until a couple of years ago. Publix has their store brand version of Dr Pepper that is called Dr Publix.
My grandmother used to say...drink it at 10 get sick at 2 and die at 4. That was a common joke on their advertising. As a kid in the 70s we still got a few 10,2,4 bottles due to bottles being recycled for the 10 cent return. As a teen I loved telling friends it has prune juice in it....true.

I recommend going to Dublin, Tx. to get the original formula with pure cane sugar in bottles vs. today's not as good false sugar flavor.

As a kid Dr. Pepper tasted like medicine to me, it's definitely an acquired taste. Coca Cola was king in our household growing up and still is today.

I remember Dr. Pepper from my trips down south in the early 60s. My dad worked for Ben Franklin five and ten cent store and would take the family along with him when he traveled down south. He generally spent most of his time in small towns so we'd stay at a local motel somewhere. And of course there'd be a cola machine nearby. My favorite was Dr Pepper along with whatever kinds weren't available to me in my home state of Pa. Always looked forward to summer and our next trip down south, and Dr Pepper of course.
Ah, Ben Franklin. That store was magical.
@@dalethelander3781 yes it was. My dad spent his career with them until he retired In 85. Oddly enough there was a Ben Franklin store about 1/2 mile away and he only worked there once . He was a store opening superintendent who basically traveled up and down the east coast setting up new stores and remodeling older ones. Spent between 2 to 5 weeks usually at whatever location he,was assigned. Most of his territory was between Connecticut and South Carolina. During the summer he'd take us down the shore (Wildwood, NJ )for a week and then somewhere down south for a couple of weeks. Spent a lot of time in motels. He'd take us to local Civil War battlefields and museums. My brother wore blue and I had grey(civil war hats). When I was about 16 or so he'd take me with him and I'd usually wind up working there for the store owner while my dad was there. Just setting up display units and unloading merchandise. Yep, I certainly remember Ben Franklin.

@@Just1Guy1000 You can still buy the four bottle carton of Dr. Pepper made with "read sugar" for about $4.00. The green canned, "real sugar" Dr. Pepper was sold in a 12 pack for about the same amount of money.
The better days
Back in the late 50’s, my parents would buy a carton of soft drinks 6 glass bottles, two 7 UP, two Dr Pepper, two Hires Rootbeer. What a treat!
Dr. Pepper has been my drink of choice since I was six or seven years old. Every time I went out to eat with my parents, I would always ask if they had it. It's been my favorite for most of my life and I doubt that's going to change.

I will always choose Dr. Pepper over other soft drinks. One of the best pot roasts I ever made was basted with it!
Cases of 24 small bottles used to be $2.00 wholesale so you could sell them for a dime a piece in the machines until the early 70s. We had a coke machine in the game room when l grew up in Dallas and family in Waco. We'd go to the Dublin building several times a year. l loved it.

Great video! As a kid, in the early 60's, Dr Pepper was the only soft drink my father would drink. My mother wouldn't touch it, she thought it tasted like prune juice! I still drink Dr Pepper to this day, although I usually go for the low calorie version. I never did acquire a taste for Coke of Pepsi.
Dublin Texas ,for a while , used to produce and sell the original Dr. Pepper in glass bottles until a lawsuit with Dr. Pepper put an end to it . The two distinctions of the original were that it was sweetened only with Imperial pure cane sugar and had the original prune juice as one of the flavors , where current drink uses raspberry juice , as I have read .
Before the 2020 fiasco , one could find ( in limited quantity) contemporary Dr. Pepper with real sugar rather than corn syrup , which is standard in most sodas .

@@biketech60 It wasn't a lawsuit that ended Dublin Dr Pepper. Dr Pepper Snapple Group (now Keurig Dr Pepper) pulled their franchise rights for trans-shipping. Selling their products outside of their distribution territory. Dublin made the argument that no other bottler was producing pure cane sugar Dr Pepper so they were not in violation of their franchise agreement (I happen to agree with them) but the parent company didn't see it that way.
Also, Dr Pepper does not now, nor did it ever, contain prune juice.

Back in the day when we played poker using a lot of wild cards, five of a kind best any straight flush, including a royal flush. I guess "house rules" have to be set when playing poker with wild cards.

Back in 1970 when I was in high school, I got a part time job at a Safeway grocery store. The store manager had a poker game at his house almost every Saturday night after the store closed at 9 pm. (The grocery stores were closed on Sunday back then in Maryland.)
They played many poker games using a lot of wild cards at times. I remember discussions about rather or not five of a kind beat a royal flush, so we voted, and we decided five of a kind beat a royal flush.
I'm 75 and my grandmother used to love Dr. Pepper (in bottles of course, no can's in those days) She joked that "Dr. Pepper was the only doctor in town with glass neck". Well, that was funny in the 50's

If you can find it made with real sugar it just tastes better. I always thought it was a little smoother. It was easy to find when I lived in TX, but a little harder to find in SC. But I get lucky every once in a while and grab it when I see it.
Most of those Mexican Coke bottlers lie about the real sugar. It is corn syrup. There are TH-cam videos with test results.

Also, in the mid 60’s my mother got a Dr Pepper cookbook at the fair, honestly. If you heat Dr Pepper it changes to a little spicy, that was the treat of hot Dr Pepper. You heat it and let it simmer a bit. One recipe was Dr Pepper Stew, it was surprisingly good and had that spicy taste. Someone stole that original cookbook, so I bought a recent version.
I remember hearing about in the 60s during Christmas time that people would drink hot Dr. Peppers at holiday parties.
I use to like it hot with slices of orange and lemon in a punch bowl. We use to have it at skating and sledding parties when i was in junior high school.

There’s a nifty reference to Dr. Pepper in the movie “Auntie Mame”, and in the movie “Blast from the Past”, Christopher Walken’s character makes hot Dr. Pepper.
The best one is in “Smokey and the Bandit”. That scene with Jackie Gleason and Burt still makes me laugh out loud to this day.

I remember a Dr. Pepper commercial about 20 years ago with Garth Brooks. He sang, “Be you/do what you do/Dr. Pepper/Nothing better “. I really enjoyed that commercial. My favorite uncle always bought my sister and me “cold drinks “ when he and my aunt came to visit. I liked Dr. Pepper and that’s what he’d always get me. Mr Pibb was a remake of Dr. Pepper and they sued and had called it Pibb. North Carolina has Cheer wine and Wal mart has a Dr soda. But Pepsi has Dr pepper with Mt Dew.

Krogers makes a Dr. Pepper version called diet Dr. K, and it's my favorite soda. 79¢ a 2 liter bottle and loaded with caffeine! What's not to love?
My first Boy Scout campout was in February and we were all might cold.
The scoutmasters heated up a saucepan of hot Dr. Pepper for us. We had never heard of such and we didn't have any lemon. It was good and warm and made for a very unique memory. We had dandelion stew for the first time on that trip as well.
My 'goto" drink - 16oz glass, filled to the brim with ice, a double shot of vodka, fill with Dr. Pepper, stir & let sit for 5 minutes. Hoist it up & take a few sips and I'll bet you finish it before you put the glass down.

I hope Dr. Pepper gets back to production of cane sugar sweetened soda as well as their usual corn syrup sweetened variety . Some prefer one , some the other . Sugar is lighter , and more refreshing when the weather is hot , IMO . San Antonio summers can be sweltering . Would be even better if they offered the original recipe version .
You can get Dublin Dr Pepper in some places....in bottles even. If still in S.A. check H.E.B.

Ironically enough, a few years later Dr Pepper Corporate would roll out their own version of the original pure cane sugar Dr Pepper that you can find in stores today.
I enjoy it as a break from my Coca-Cola habbit . It taste like cola with a drop of wild cherry cough syrup. :-)

I always thought 'hot' Dr. Pepper was a joke from that Brendan Fraser movie. I was staining a deck out in the sun one summer and I had a bottle out in the direct sunlight. Needless to say it became super heated and the drink was pretty awesome.
A bag of peanuts in a cold bottle of Dr. Pepper was my favorite drink as a kid.

Funny how there's a chain of restaurants called A&W (where the famous A&W root beer got its start) which was owned for many years by Yum Brands (Pizza Hut, KFC, Taco Bell) considering the fact that A&W root beer is made by the Dr Pepper company, but Yum Brands is actually the group of restaurant chains which were owned by Pepsi before it separated from Pepsi in 1997. Then in 2002 the combined Long John Silver's/A&W chain was bought by Yum Brands.

Oh those Dublin Dr Peppers. You can still buy them with cane sugar but they taste different than the Dublin DP did. When I would go to DFW I would come home by way of Stephenville to stop at the grocery and get cases of Dublin DP. You could only get them within so many miles of Dublin.

An interesting thing I have noticed with Dr. Pepper. I am a T-1 Diabetic and can't tell the difference in taste between regular Dr. Pepper and diet Dr. Pepper.

I LOVE Dr. Pepper and typically have a six pack in the fridge! I now live abroad in a few different countries and am always pleased when I find it in stores around the world. Unfortunately, they are expensive outside of the states. Luckily, I usually keep one in my pantry for those days when I gotta have a drink.
Nice video and pretty informative, but you could have included some other interesting tidbits, like Dr Pepper and 7up merged way back in the 60’s, I think. The Dr Pepper-7up headquarters building is this unusual green glass building in Dallas. There used to be Dr Pepper juice filled gum in the 80’-90’s, it was pretty good 👍. Also Dr Pepper lip gloss for the girls. Before Keurig bought DP-7up, Cadbury bought it and got it going in Europe. Also the Dr Pepper-7up Co. includes A&W, Canada Dry, Crush, Squirt, Snapple and a few others.

Interesting! thank you, RC! I never was a big pop fan, we grew up calling ig "pop" from Minnesota here. Maybe because we drank kool- aid, our family was petty good size, nine of us. Even when I went out on my own I never cared to much for it.
The only soda in our house was for my dad. We swore he drank birch beer because us kids wouldn't go near it. We always had the powdered ice tea.
We called it "pop" in Chicago, too. I moved to Los Angeles and had to learn to call it "sew-da" to avoid being looked at sideways.
Along with losing my "Chi-CAH-gah" accent.

I still drink Dr Pepper, but wish I could find the "made with suger" version instead of the high fructose corn syrup kind. It came in a mostly green and red can. I thought it tasted better, and a little more mellow.
I could find it in Publix and Winn Dixie in Florida, and at Safeway in Maryland, until a couple of years ago. Publix has their store brand version of Dr Pepper that is called Dr Publix.
My grandmother used to say...drink it at 10 get sick at 2 and die at 4. That was a common joke on their advertising. As a kid in the 70s we still got a few 10,2,4 bottles due to bottles being recycled for the 10 cent return. As a teen I loved telling friends it has prune juice in it....true.

Oddly enough, prune is not one of the 23 flavors used in creating Dr Pepper. At its core, Dr Pepper is a cherry/grape flavor with many others added.
If it were prune juice, I'd have endless diahhrea.
