Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with amazing people. I remember I was on a bus from Colombo to Kandy, was dead tired from my flight and fell asleep. The man sat next to me asked where I wanna go and he will wake me up when we arrived. He unfortunately left earlier than me, but asked the next person to wake me up. The next man who sat next to me woke me up and said we have arrived. It was early in the morning, the bus was full with people, but someone offered me a seat because I will be longer on the bus than her. I will never forget that bus ride. Just a proof that there are nice people out there. My heart goes to the Sri Lankans.. I hope someday things will get better. Comeback stronger!
I was also sitting in such a bus when during night to the same destination..sleeping in there waa tough..my head slammed on the window frame which was metal..arrived after midnight..i could have taken more time so i did not loose my mind the following days and left sri lanka shortly after..a that was a few years ago..maybe 6 years..
I actually went to sri lanka this summer to visit a lot of family, and i got to experience the struggles first hand. There were several power outages a day that lasted hours, it was nearly impossible to find rides, and there were lines of vehicles/people that remained on the streets for days awaiting gas. however, the worst thing is the affect all of this has on the children of the country. specifically in education, with schools being closed down and students not having the resources they need to learn. its extremely unfortunate how easily some politicians can abuse their power. As long as it doesn’t affect themselves, the wellbeing of the people is of no concern to them
As a student in the final year of school from Sri Lanka, it's truly depressing to realize that our life prospects have been partially, (if not completely) destroyed by such incompetent, corrupt, and immoral rule. What's even worse is that as an economics student, we are taught how the kind of policies that led to our ruin are to be avoided. Too late for that i guess. I pray for my country and my people. I pray for strength to keep going. Edit: thank you for the kind words, everybody. They mean a lot to us here in SL
Don’t worry, the WEF appreciates your service and using your country as a test bed for its policies. Can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs! /s
I’m a seafarer on a cargo ship and my crew-mates are from Sri Lanka. I see them worried about their families, their kids future. Yet they continue to work hard , away from their families onboard so they can earn some money for their families.
I visited Sri Lanka in the end of March this year, just before the worst of the crisis started. There were commonly rolling blackouts that made it difficult to take out money to pay for basic services. I was blown away by the humility, hospitality and friendliness shown by the Sri Lankan people despite their hardships. It's such a beautiful country, and I hope they can manage to form a stable government that can take control and bring stability and prosperity!

I'm a Sri Lankan and I love this video because it showcases 10x times more than the things shown through out local TV channels within Sri Lanka. Most people in Sri Lanka does not even understand the current situation (how this happened, why it happened and what the things which needs to be done to get out of the problem). Thank you for making such a detailed and important documentry 👏. I hope that other countries can learn from this and make it so that they do not go through the same scenario. It is a harsh experience for everyone including children and infants.
As a Sri Lankan who was in the middle of all this chaos I can confidently say that this creator has done a lot of research and is well educated on the matter. One massive thing you missed about the drainage of country's funds though. Rajapaksas put together a band of cronies to steal public money very effectively through various deals. That's the reason they were involved in so many construction projects. Just look for Aspen medical scandal. The known, calculated amount robbed by Rajapaksas for the moment is 18 billion USD. They created many more billionaires around the world, who took part in their crimes. That's why the public is demanding to have "their money back". Also they were mass murderers. They would quickly and effectively murder/disappear anybody who'd stand in their way. Mostly journalists, murdered in broad daylight. They appointed a bunch of spineless cronies as military chiefs and used Sri Lankan military as their personal guard dogs. They still are. These are all facts and the most important ones.

In Sri Lanka, just over 1/4th of the population works in agriculture. That's compared to less than 1% in the United States. When your government is dumb enough to ban fertilizer imports, and massively decrease crop yields, things are going to get very ugly! And that's before the debt, tourism drop, and food and energy prices skyrocketed.
While the title 'How One Powerful Family Destroyed A Country' oversimplifies a far more complex problem, you've produced a GREAT informative video! subscribed.
Couple of corrections: Tourism collapsed in 2019 (before covid) with the targeting of tourists in the Easter Bombings. Secondly, Russia invaded in 2022 not 2021 as stated in the video (5m20s).
Yeah well who put this family in power for so long? There's a large degree of personal responsibility here... the Sri Lankan people were not forced to keep repeatedly voting him in for so many years, but they kept on doing it.

This video gives a good account of most of what happened. The corruption and disappearance of the funds wasn't clearly addressed and if you are planning to do a sequel please cover these areas as well. I'm a Sri Lankan citizen and experienced this crisis firsthand. Thank you for properly giving the accounts of things that happened here unlike most international media outlets which distorted the narrative for a sensationalized headline.
As a Sri Lankan who has been warning my fellow country men for over 15 years on what supporting corrupt family can bring us, the only solution I see is the drastic changes in the attitude by the people of Sri Lanka to adopt a zero tolerance policy towards corruption. All Sri Lankans are now paying the price of complacency and not speaking out in the face of corruption. Increasing amounts of people are resorting to petty theft for survival. Education of an entire generation has been ruined. But these hardships have made us strong and resilient and we will keep working to recover the economy of this country and also save it's soul.
It is truly sad what has happened in your country, my only question is who will take over and how do you make sure that this new leader remains accountable? Many times in history this cycle occurs where the new guy is even worse than the previous. I truly hope that this is not the same for your country. Will keep Sri Lanka in my prayers.

That is so true! Democracy and the rule of law need to be nurtured and improved everywhere. Right now we have several examples of countries where this has been declining. As a Sri Lankan immigrant it is tragic what is happening, friends were in the protests and family on empty stomachs. It is terrible what the Rajapakshas have done to the country and I hope that the next leaders will learn from the mistakes of them.
What worries me is that historically, in situations like these the ones that come to power after the political chaos are often far worse than the original tyrants.
The Philippines is a prime example. The former dictator was a genius but he could not control peoples sentiments against him. This is all die to media manipulation ate the time. It is a 20+ year dictatorship yes, but the country is in continuous progress. After the dictator was kicked out of power by the people who thought they were doing the right thing, The flagbearers of the revolution made many affiliated businesses very happy and rich. The rapid growth of the country halted. Farmers are killed secretly, funds taken, The very first nuclear power project that was about to be completed was stopped making billions of investments lost to thin air. Infrastructure projects turned into family monument buildingprojects etc. The conclusion is, the family that succeeded the “Throne” was no better or even worse that the “Evil” that the people were trying to defeat.
Fascism or communism are like fevers, they attempt to destroy what is ailing the nation with extreme measures. Like a human body, a nation cannot be under a fever for very long either.

Love how the WEF immediately took down the PM's article about how he was gonna make Sri Lanka an economic power by just borrowing a bunch of money from the international banking cartel :) totally didn't blow up in his face people need to recognize that international banks benefit from convincing countries to put themselves in deep debt and they do this deliberately. Nobody should be allowed to put their entire country in debt without express permission from their people for each and every loan. The biggest problem with modern economics is that PMs are given a blank cheque and told to just spend whatever they feel like because public debt will cover it, it's irresponsible it's theft and it's just morally wrong on all aspects we wouldn't allow anybody else to get away with this, why do we allow the governments? You're just BEGGING for corruption in the current system
You're very ignorant if you have this opinion on debt in general. Debt is a powerful tool and idiotic people's wrongdoings shouldn't be pinned on others (banks, wef and whatnot). Refrigerated food, medicine, machinery, life saving medical equipment etc. Every time they turn the power off to save money they have to start a countdown on much bigger problems.
Of course he didnt mentioned it. Notice how when they shifted for Environmental crap it help boast the collapse of the country plus the corrupted pissant Politions!
Sri Lanka is Iceland after 2008. Very very very similar story. Once a small country starts depending too much on external investments and debt borrowing for growth, it is marked for failure.
Governments must realise that the world Bank and IMF are the tools of the western governments used in order to enslave the poorer countries, relying on them is never going to work out.
@@speedking7224 yeah!! They are not exactly bailouts, rather traps... Extensive long term traps. Sri Lanka is done for if they don't get a strong leader. Pray to lord that does happen. So many citizens and they were never really at fault right!
@@triton62674 yeah the government was. The officials basically offered the banks ease of operating internationally so as to attract foreign investments in the country. I mean in simple terms the politicians and the bankers were in bed together big time and the country failed due to corrupt management. Now Iceland had its tourism to save itself much like Sri Lanka but unfortunately Russian war has hampered that too. Sri Lanka's future literally gives me goosebumps... Inflation, unemployment, no tourism, negligible source of revenue, lack of government, people at riots, it's a mini apocalypse....
I'm from the UK, but my father (who I never got the chance to meet) was born in Sri Lanka. I've wanted to go there my whole life to see the place he called home for the first years of his life. When the civil war ended in 2009, I thought Sri Lanka would continue its progress into stability and prosperity. Seeing this is heartbreaking, and it may be many years before the country recovers. I hope the people of Sri Lanka can survive this and come out stronger than before. I'm still waiting to meet you all some day.
you should go there with out being delay your travel it is full of beautiful historical places and rich in nature you should know your root why you being late to fulfil one of your dreams
As a Sri Lankan I feel conflicted watching videos like this because on the one hand I want the story to go out, on the other hand I know some details will be wrong or missing. I appreciate you shining the spotlight but here is my list of ammendments to your story: 1. The end of the war included many war crimes against the Tamil people of the North and East. All foreign journalists were cleared from the war zone before the final stages of the war to remove witnesses. 2. The majority of economic growth in Sri Lanka was as a result of the war ending and a lot of foreign investment happening in the country. The country saw very little benefit from the Chinese loans and investment projects. All projects funded through Chinese loans were overpriced with a huge proportion of the money being embezzled by corrupt politicians. A lot of the projects like the Matale airport, Hambantota port, Lotus Theatre and Lotus Tower have no benefit to the people they are projects commissioned solely to embezzle money. 3. In 2015 the Rajapaksas were voted out of power, because despite the outward growth, and 'beautification' of the country, the cost of living to the average Sri Lankan was increasing. 4. However, the government that took over had many scandals and public foibles. Then in 2018 the Rajapaksas through other agents began a campaign of anti-muslim racism, leading to incidents of mob violence and the destruction of muslim businesses. This campaign allowed them to win local government elections. Seeing this upswell of support Mahinda Rajapaksa tried to stage a coup in 2018 but after 40 days had to give it up and resign. 5. The anti-muslim campaigns culminated in the ostensibly Isis led Easter bombings of 2019 which most Sri Lankans believe the Rajapaksas, working with Maithreepala Sirisena the then president, allowed to happen. This incident was the first big blow to Sri Lankan tourism and led the Rajapaksas, who are seen as strong anti-terrorism, milataristic and anti-muslim candidates to win the 2019 elections. 6. In late 2021 the Sri Lankan government began printing currency at an enormous rate while simoultaneously fixing the exchange rate that the banks were allowed to trade under. This led to the majority of foreign currency earners and businesses exchanging foreign currency on the black market where the exchange rate was fairer than what the banks were forced to offer. This accelerated the government's shortage of foreign currency reserved dramatically. 7. I don't know where this 130% inflation rate comes from. The cost of fuel when available increased by 400%, the cost of gas increased by 300%, the cost of food by 300%, the cost of electronics by 250%, and we are only 6 months into the year. 8. More than 60 people have died waiting in queues for fuel, gas and other essential items. More people have died because of a lack of essential medicines or petrol for ambulances. Over 20 Sri Lankans have died in the protests.
Thank you for interesting explanation.. I admire and praying for Sri Lankan people and your beautiful country . This is a global affair what is going on in the world we need to unite and stay strong together against the globalists 💪🏻
We must stop the insider trading, entitlements, and kick backs enjoyed by our civil servants. All democracies must immediately create real-time financial transparency for all senior and elected government employees, their family, and business associates! Those found guilty of corruption should have all of their assets seized, put on trial for treason, and have their families exiled from the country or barred from politics for 2 generations.
People in power will never allow something like this though some really great ideas. Also people saying this is too harsh and innocent family members shouldn't be barred and all.. Punishments are supposed to discourage people from doing the crimes anyway and if you don't stop family members from Participating in politics they'll just be Puppets Happens all the time in India.
Thank you Dagogo. I have always been impressed and in reverence to Sri Lanka, being a multi religion country with tons of Buddhist history. The culture, architecture, and more of the country is amazing, and I hope to visit eventually. I hate when these types of things happen, and spreading the word is extremely important.
1:16 FYI that is not alcohol. It is a sweet syrup made using coconut which is used with sweet food. Something like Maple syrup. And yes the Rajapakshe family has done so much irreversible damages to the Sri Lankan economy and to the people.
I just found out about this now, sad that this isn't much more mainstream. Made me think about my old Sri Lankan English teacher, he was the best in all aspects and will always be my favourite teacher. Hope him and his family are doing well.
Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into your videos, you are a man with his hand on the chest of the world feeling it's heart beating then translating the beats into understandable content. Thank you :)
@erog hau Only if they are idiotic enough to make it illegal to grow non-organic crops. Most Western Democracies are not as nepotism based as Sri Lanka either which is also a major factor to their issues. If I had the choice to choose between my family to run a country or a bunch of experts, I would opt for the experts. Most western countries are not islands either which was another problem that just made the situation worse. It probably will happen to other countries but as the video says, other governments should really be learning from this. They all have access to the correct information it is just down to them whether or not they believe then use it properly.
Absolutely heartwarming to know that the citizens even cook foods and do sing-a-longs inside the residency to boost morale. Godspeed to everyone on Sri Lanka
That caught my eye too, the sing-along. I hope that when Sri Lanka is back on the path to prosperity and peace, that the new leaders hold public musical events at the residence to commemorate the moment. People power works.
There are no good police Statism is the worlds most dangerous religion and police are simply the modern knight templar. Democide more people have died at the hands of their own governments than all wars and genocides combined. Remember they are not good people no good people work for the government and even worse people enforce their will on us. We must end it all before its too late.
That's because a mob is a simple minded creature. It does whatever will sate it's animalistic hunger. Even if that's having fun in the middle of the crisis. In the first place storming into the palace is a meaningless action since the rajpaksha had already fled. What they were doing was for distraction so they don't have to face the harsh reality outside
One of my best friends is from Sri Lanka. I asked him last week what was going on and he was pretty nonchalant about it. I asked him why so chill, and he said "we all grew up in the middle of a civil war brother, terrorists would bomb our schools and execute people often. This doesn't seem all that bad."
Puts things back in perspective straight away. You wouldn't be able to help but be hardened to events like that growing up. Although a bullet is sometimes preferable to a death by hunger.

I am so glad this video exists. I am from Sri Lanka and looking on the news about Sri Lanka is such a painful act. This is why the Rajapaksha family must go, especially admirers { like Ranil } I hope we get out of this crisis, get the money back, and change the way of life in the island country before another war rips out.
I come from Argentina, a country that experienced economic collapse in 2001. I have to say that there might be some contributing external factors to these crises, but the main thing is how democracy reflects the state of a society, its priorities and idiosyncrasies, its systemic maladies. Sri Lanka clearly has a political class problem and there must be systemic corruption, even on a daily basis for the common person. If the common person cannot behave honourably, you can't expect the political class to do so- they are you. Pity that change comes from destruction and collapse.
@@synewparadigm what hurts the most about living with high inflation is that changes in your lifestyle happen slowly and sadly you become used to be every day a little bit poorer. When I was a kid (about 20 years ago) I remember saving a few bucks to buy Magic:The Gathering booster packs that cost about 14 dollars. Those were a bit expensive, but I could buy even as a kid a few ones once every few months. For my 15 YO birthday my dad got me a 700$ Jackson guitar. Not the best one around, but still a great guitar for a kid. Nowadays, 14 dollars hurt a lot even as an adult when the average income is less than 500$. Most Argentinian families cannot buy their kids stuff like we got 20 years ago and that hurts. Knowing that your kids will live a poor childhood (compared to yours) sucks. Everyone I know wants to move to other countries, but to do so you need to save A LOT (for us). Current situation in Argentina is a time-ticking bomb. I honestly dont know if it is a matter of days, weeks, months or maybe years till our goverment collapses like Sri Lanka.

I'm a Sri Lankan CS student. Aside from the economic crisis, unable to travel, the constant power cuts, the negativity that comes with the depressing situation of the country all due to greed, can result in a mental toll. Here's my personal way of combating this challenge 1. Working out (it's just a 30 min workout, but the adrenaline pump, the power, and resilience brought through the after work out has definitely contributed to my sanity) 2. Move (since I'm on summer vacation, and almost all education is conducted remote, there is no actual reason to step outside. But take an ACTIVE choice to do so. Even if it's just walking on the pavements. My personal recommendation, if allowed, go for a sport, a badminton court, swimming pool, step out If in curfew, as is right now, make sure to shift your workspace constantly, somewhere there is a dose of sunlight. Make sure you get a dose of a greenery sight as well) 3. Focus on what you can control (let's be real, this is a big big mess, and honestly it's not your fault. So try not to let it get to you. Yes you need to be aware, but don't dwell in that pit, try not to be consumed by the feedback loop. For example something that I've been focusing is my career. I've been working day and night on getting that remote internship and hopefully get some USD on the process. In that obsession I find little to no time to dwell in this misery. It may seem as if I live in a bubble, but if that bubble saves my sanity, I'd rather stay in it) To all my Sri Lankan students, I know everything is so messed up. And I'm so proud for putting through this mess, and choosing to stay alive, I'm proud of you. And I hope everything gets better.
take care and everything. but... 1. working out in a food crisis seems kinda backwards. 2. same point as working out but with the word "move" for some reason. 3. stating the obvious. are you trying to be a politician/TH-cam motivation guru? if then you're going on the right path.
@@Sen5325 I know this might seem cliché, but all you got to do is try to shift your mentality. And by no way it's easy. A few months back I had a major breakdown literally loosing my mind. And we need to acknowledge that happens. We need to accept that things like that happens. That desperation, hopelessness and whole bunch of negative emotions comes with it. And it's normal to feel like that. It truly is. Because this is messed up on so many ways. I don't know how practical this might seem, but I've basically resolved to get an education (not depending on uni but self study, which is possible given my field in computer science) so spend my time studying and polishing my skills so I can get a remote job and earn atleast for myself, to give myself a better life. This sounds materialistic, but I honestly can't control what happens around me, instead I can focus on first to lift myself and if that works then maybe lift another and another. But now my focus is to learn enough so I can get my skills all polished. My point being try to focus on what you can control. The few things you can control. Like your effort to try to be healthy, maybe learning a new skill (there's enough and more free content on the internet) , being kind to yourself and if it's within your reach maybe to another as well. I remember in my orientation the principal told us a story. She said that when she was going to AL classes early morning she found that the streets were dark. Her father then said, don't look at the dark road ahead, focus on reaching the next light lamp. The future is dim, may even be dark, but we need to take that extra effort to focus on what's coming ahead, the very next milestone. If you are in OLs then maybe getting through a good OL result and maybe learning few soft skills on the way, don't worry about university at that level. Take one step at a time. One breath at a time. And remember taking one step forward is better than staying numb. It's hard. Everything is messed up. And it's okay if you feel lost. It's okay to breakdown. It's okay to feel pain. Feel that. Then take a deep breath and see what you can do next

This is literally what happens when someone not familiar with Tropico plays a Tropico game. You take out a fuck load of debt to make exports higher. Raise wages for everyone to attract workers, work on military reinforcements to sqush shanties and rebels, then when your resources don't make enough money to pay back your debt, you watch as your citizens revolt due to lack of fuel, medicine, food and safety. Then you get foreign militaries who start asking for their money back or they attack. Then you lose because another country destroys you. I see what a family or a man can do to a country by the first hand. As a Turkish citizen I'm seeing the same disasters happening in my country. Devalued own currency, questionable non-logical over night decisions by goverment and so on. The stories of Sri Lanka and Turkey are terrifyngly similar actually. I think main difference is geography and population. Hope they can get back up with the new regime and I really hope we don't see the same days either. Stay strong Sri Lanka. You managed to get rid of the problem. Now it is time to restructure the country.

I studied in Turkey for six years and i moved back to South Africa a year and half ago. I have been following the news from here and what Tayyip is doing with that beautiful country is unbelievably sad. I hope you and all level headed Turks can vote that tyrant out of Parliament next year.
These problems are growing in Mexico, Ghana, Indonesia and elsewhere. The real question is: why is the debt more important than the lives destroyed? Rich countries cancel debts among themselves all the time, yet a poor country must starve their citizens to extract as much money as possible. Even when the loan is made to a corrupt leader who has fled the country.
It's happening all over the world. The US television stations do NOT ever air these things. Our people are sick, poor, uneducated, brainwashed, and unable to make a good decision. They refuse to snap out of it. Even if we are all broke, eating bugs, and under attack people will still support this madness.
A good summary of Sri Lanka's economic crisis. Depressing to see how the country has been mismanaged by corrupt leaders. I visited Sri Lanka a few years ago and loved my trip there: a beautiful nation, with warm and kind-hearted people. I pray they're able to recover from this disaster soon.
The signs were there a decade ago. War criminals, responsible for the slaughter of 40,000 innocent Tamil people at the end of the civil war in 2009. Yet the singalese majority voted this corrupt Rajpapska family back in again and again, based on Chinese billion dollar loans.
Was too late to know about this, situation looks pretty worse. Hopefully every nation shud be doing something helpful in the coming months and Sri Lanka might be able to rise back stronger than ever. Keep working hard my brothers and sisters... Love from India ❤️
I think it's really important to note that this is only the beginning of these kinds of things happening in countries across the world. Just because it started in Sri Lanka does not mean that it will stay there. Things are getting pretty dire out there, be safe.
This ugly situation is the situation for most countries of the world, structurally. Most countries are presently controlled by an interlocking group of inside investors/corporate owners/inter-married families. Sometimes the group of families is small, sometimes it's large. I say this as an American.
also as an american, our country is nothing more than a corporatocracy being sold out to the highest bidders. the greed of the wealthy elite will destroy us and there is nothing we can do to stop it short of a full on violent revolution.
To conclude the story Gotabhaya Rajapaksha fled the country and finally gave his official resignation few hours ago. Next comes the difficult part of electing an interim president and stabilizing the government. Most outside news media didn't get the full story correct and were trying to fit the situation to their own narratives. But this was a pretty accurate summary. Kudos on the research Dagogo

I would really like to see this expanded to a series; there are a number of countries that have defaulted over the course of the last year. Largely, the reasons (excuses) have been the same. A series like this - in my opinion - will be a giant wake-up call the "entitled" so desperately need. "I sip champagne today, but tomorrow I may starve". Great work Mr. Altraide. PS: No-one can deny Sir David's voice, but I would say that I could listen to your voice - you have that unique quality too.
There were actually quite unique default reasons this year in case of Russia/Belarus. They defaulted not because they didn't have the money to pay back on the debt but because the banks throu which they borrowed refused to take their money due to sanctions. As far as I know this is the first time in history something like this happened and this is fascinating.
We will see a lot more defaulting as the us is starting to implement debr reducing programs like in reasing the power of the usd (almost 20% already) thus goods that are needed from the us will be 20% more expensive. Also a lot of debt is to be paid back in usd. With a pretty high inflation and this move the us can de facto reduce a lot of the 6 trillion debt. If you havent already leave the bond market and get ready for a rise in commodities, which will furthermore cripple a lot of countries.
There are only a few good leaders on this whole mf Globe that care enough about the people , dont be blind , i trust names and caracters , not companies , multinacionals .... big difference
I'm concerned how they can recover, because their foreign trade most of the time are in negative, and most of income came from tourism. So unless the unrest calmed down and the tourism restarted, I can't see "easy" (means not / less affecting the people) way to recover. I hope they stay strong in life and monitor the new government closer than before.
Lack of domestic fertilizer was a ticking time bomb for an economy that prioritized agriculture for domestic consumption. No food exports means less foreign currency appearing in the bank. Importing fertilizer means more foreign currency leaves Sri Lanka. Depending on tourism to cover this up doesn't helps since tourism isn't a necessity for the tourist customers .
I'm a "digital nomad" (hate the term...) that lives in Sri Lanka at the moment and have been here before. One thing that's worrying me is that it seems a lot of people are investing in different ponzi and pyramid schemes online. People take loans with 20%+ interest rates to invest in these schemes, and when they crash (which they will) I'm worried how all those people will manage and what will happen. Sri Lanka is a wonderful country. Nature is fantastic, the people are nice, the food is awesome. I keep hoping it will be a popular tourist destination soon but just as things are looking to get better something happens, like the terrorist attack, or covid, or the topics of this video and in the future maybe all those in debth because of these schemes. They just can't seem to catch a break.
"not any citizen of any nations deserves what has happened in Sri Lanka" Weird because in Greece there is a saying "Nations have the government they deserve"
doesn't sound that absurd once you realize that these are the people who elect their own government and isn't something that they have been imposed upon them to deal with
Well it's oddly true ig. Most of the Sri Lankan protesters and rioters who are against the Rajapakshas are the exact people who voted for him. 3/4th of the voters have voted for Gotabaya, which means more than half of the Sri Lankan population have voted for him to take 3/4th of the power in the parliament. Not saying that Sri Lanka deserved the ciris, but when your voting for two brothers which one of them previously tried to bring their family into the parliament, you kinda atleats had to expect the disasters that might happen.
@@nkj9726 that's a lie . you disregard that people seated in position of power can manipulate the people. They just didn't know any better. Ignorance shouldn't be enough to condemn these people
MEME MEME rioters are aligned with the JVP and are infiltrating the protests like Antifa infiltrated BLM protests in US. Also the trend occurred where the protests escalated to violence which persisted until Ranil was made PM, then suddenly stopped. Then protests began again and escalated to violence and the presidential palace takeover and persisted until Gota resigned and Ranil became acting president, then suddenly stopped. In a few weeks expect protests to ramp up and violence occur as parliament convenes and determines wether Ranil becomes official president or not. But Ranil may use an ace card- he just released Ranjav from prison. Parliament may select Ranjav to which Ranjav makes Ranil PM resulting in a Shadow government similar to Cheney controlling the US policy while Bush was president. Oh and a protestor wearing a fist symbol shirt raided the news recently, the fist is the rebranded for the World Revolutionary Movment, which the JVP is a proxy to. Before the Civil War, JVP led a Communist Revolution in the 60’s to forcefully take control. An estimated 50,000 died as a result. What we are seeing now is another page to a conflict riddled chapter in Sri Lankan history.

I love this!

Otherwise, you will be colonized by ruthless foreign rulers who don't care about your philosophy. Just see what happened to various American First Nations who were pretty enlightened and self-sufficient but did not prepare themselves for the invasion of European powers who had centuries of modern warfare experience, and deadly bugs on their bodies. They failed to send out spies back to Europe to report back on enemy capacity to wage war, or establish weapons trade. Some enslaved natives returned to Indian territories and reported on what they saw. Perhaps that frightened some tribes to not join into the resistance. In 2018 December, I had visited Sri Lanka. I went to Colombo, Kandy, Willpattu, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Pinnewala, Negombo .... what I beautiful contry...soo greenary wonderful people, wonderful food, famous tea and coffee plantations......so many historical places, so enriched culture.... Being an Indian I feel proud that we share so many common things we Sri Lanka from time immemorial from the time of great Lankan King Raavana.... and Sigiriya ..uff My dream come true...such a fascinating place the architecture the concept.... its unimaginable...
..In those days I had seen massive construction was going on with Chinese Aid...even I have seen Chinese labours working there. what caught my attention was huge Banner hanging down from the top of such tall buildings written in Chinese language only... It was awkward as ..if you are doing something in collaboration with another country at their soil with their labour ... atleast in the advertisement you mention their native language...but it was ONLY Chinese... The owner of our Hotel in Sigiriya became a good friend of mine I express this to him and said Sri Lanka should be carefull about China and their policy.... because historically China is a dictatorial nation...
...and today you see ... they have just ruined this beautiful country..... During our stay in Negombo, we used to go a nearby restaurant, just 5 mints walk from our staying hotel, for meals.Their continental dishes were splendid... The restaurant was run by a family.. Chief owner a single mother Lady, her little daughter and her old parents.... that little daughter became a good friend of my child and the use to play together...the owner lady was good friend of my wife.... They all wish a goodbye on the final day and said "Come back again..." ...It still echo within us..
I feel so disheartened for Sri Lanka..

did you time traveled?.Chinese buildings will be built in future at port city.there arent that much chinese influence in colombo.i dont say chinese arent there , there are some chinese companies doing business there , but have never seen large banners with chinese stuff in colombo for these 17 years.thereare few
And sri lanka never get the side of india , cuz your people insult all the neighborhood countries and acting like best.your overpride is the only reason why sri lankans nepalis and bangladeshis dont like you.but chinese are well behaved people
I feel so badly for my friends in Sri Lanka. I left there in mid-March. I spent a month there, it's a beautiful country with wonderful people. I now feel like I left in the nick of time. The gas lines were already insanely long and the tension was palpable. Political corruption is running rampant around the world. I fear the future looks bleak.
Stupid voters deserve stupid outcomes. Maybe next time they vote for someone not from an insanely corrupt family. And instead a decent human working class person. If not, I have no sympathy, they shall choke on their own stupidity.
I am a 18 year old Sri Lankan still living in Sri Lanka. It is absolutely appalling to see what this family has done to our beautiful nation. Seeing people staying for days in queues with some even dying just breaks my heart as well as thinking of the number of people who don’t have money to provide for themselves and their families. While we can celebrate for a short time now that Gotabaya has resigned now the next step is to slowly rebuild this nation which involves the role of the interim president Ranil Wickramasinghe who is known to be quite crude. I pray for my nation and all the people to one day come back to where we used to be when we had fuel and supplies such as food and when our currency wasn’t in the state it is now. Stay strong Sri Lanka ✊🇱🇰
Does the government subsidize fuel for the citizens? There shouldn't be fuel shortages if the citizens are paying 100% of the cost. Why is the government the middleman?

I send lots of prayer to Sri Lanka 🇱🇰. As a Ugandan, I feel we are bound to a similar destiny. When Museveni took over in 1986, the economy became a family business. All decision making lies in their hands. As of today, we are badly in debt and borrowing seems to be on the rise. Fuel prices have skyrocketed, there’s suppression of free speech and hundreds losing their lives to famine in North of Uganda 🇺🇬. It’s saddening and all we do these days is pray and hope God makes a way 🇺🇬
Very true, are you from the north? Acholi?
"God" won't make a way for a situation that man created. Prayers do nothing. Better to understand the situation and formulate a plan that involves the entire nation than to pray empty prayers.
I love when people say hopes and prayers. Basically you are saying fuck you and you don't care but hey let me send a generic message that means and does nothing. You wanna help send them money not hopes and prayers moron. Before you ask me what I have done ill tell you. NOTHING and plan to do nothing I have my own family to worry about. I’m living in Sri Lanka in this very moment. And you forgot to mention about the daily power cut, intervals of 1-2hours, 2-3times a day across the whole island, this is nuts. Peoples living standards have dropped massively over the month yet people of Sri Lanka still shown resilience and protesting peacefully, but we dunno if it’s how much longer it’s gonna last if food runs out in the country.
He did mention the rolling blackouts briefly at the beginning of the video in the intro. He should've gone into detail though about how much of an effect they have. Refrigerated food, medicine, machinery, life saving medical equipment etc. Every time they turn the power off to save money they have to start a countdown on much bigger problems.
He mentioned it in the intro at least, one of the first things he did in the video
I don't think they are protesting "peacefully" they are just destroying their own national property.

As a Sri Lankan I feel conflicted watching videos like this because on the one hand I want the story to go out, on the other hand I know some details will be wrong or missing. I appreciate you shining the spotlight but here is my list of ammendments to your story:
Basically, back on ground Zero and in a deep shite situation.
Yeah one of those Tamil muslims came to my country and set half a dozen people, including children on fire
I remember (1), the Tamils surrendered & gave up their weapons then were murdered. They banned the 'Press' but truth always comes out.

It’s absolutely heartbreaking, I hope they can recover as a country
Absolutely heartwarming to know that the citizens even cook foods and do sing-a-longs inside the residency to boost morale. Godspeed to everyone on Sri Lanka

I Would like to visite Argentina to see/ understand how people can survive in high inflation.
Hey. I'm extremely sorry for asking this but this is from my deep curiosity. You guys have the best football player in the world. Do they have concern in economic situation that happen in your country. Do they have any some aid or whatsoever. Again, i am sorry for asking this🙏
@@chettonex I think that the same is happening in Europe and at few states in the US, as California but at a slower pace. Sometimes kicking the bucket and restarting from scratch is the best solution. Do people use foreign currency on daily transactions?, do people barter? do people keep money at their bank account? are people mad?...
in political science the question is : "Does the attitude create the structure, or does the structure create the attitude"??
I'm a Sri Lankan CS student. Aside from the economic crisis, unable to travel, the constant power cuts, the negativity that comes with the depressing situation of the country all due to greed, can result in a mental toll.
Here's my personal way of combating this challenge
1. Working out (it's just a 30 min workout, but the adrenaline pump, the power, and resilience brought through the after work out has definitely contributed to my sanity)
2. Move (since I'm on summer vacation, and almost all education is conducted remote, there is no actual reason to step outside. But take an ACTIVE choice to do so. Even if it's just walking on the pavements. My personal recommendation, if allowed, go for a sport, a badminton court, swimming pool, step out
If in curfew, as is right now, make sure to shift your workspace constantly, somewhere there is a dose of sunlight. Make sure you get a dose of a greenery sight as well)
3. It may seem as if I live in a bubble, but if that bubble saves my sanity, I'd rather stay in it)
To all my Sri Lankan students, I know everything is so messed up. And I'm so proud for putting through this mess, and choosing to stay alive, I'm proud of you. And I hope everything gets better.
These are very wise advices. Stay safe, my man!
take care and everything. but...
1. working out in a food crisis seems kinda backwards.
2. same point as working out but with the word "move" for some reason.
3. stating the obvious.
are you trying to be a politician/TH-cam motivation guru?
if then you're going on the right path.
Thank you. Most positive post I have seen from a Sri Lankan, yet.
The Whole World is FALLING !!!

Really sad to see this not play out in a game but instead in real life.
Too bad there isn't some exploit like in Tropico. If there was, The Spiffing Brit would probably forget why he was exploiting and end up giving them all the money. 🤣
lol soooo truee XD

all i can say is that im glad theyve been outed for who they truly are and what their nation's money has gone towards.

my uncle was actually fighting amongst the tamil tigers wanting to serve the interests of the people, and he went missing some time before the tigers dissolved. i never knew what had happened to him
Sorry to hear about your uncle. Tamil Tigers and civil wars-wars, in general-are a great loss and even greater tragedy, no matter the side you stand or the side that wins. I hope you and your family are doing okay and wish for your nation's best in the coming time.

First plan on the new world order Georgia Guidestones is for 93% of all people to be disappeared. (That includes blacks, whites, Mexicans, earlier inhabitors, Asians, Christians...and even most Democrats.)
Isaiah 65:12 Therefore will I number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter: because when I called, ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear; but did evil before mine eyes, and did choose that wherein I delighted not.

I have been to Sri Lanka twice in my 20s it is such a gem of a country. Beautiful, cheap, and the people are super nice. I hope they recover.
The fuel shortage reminds me of when I lived in NYC after hurricane Sandy. The fuel was short for a while and lines at the few gas stations that were open were close to a mile long each. One person tried to cut a line and was murdered.
I never wanted to believe these rumors about these situations goin on in Turkey but guess it's actually true 😔 Hope that Sri Lanka gain its power again and become normal ❤️ Same goes to Turkey, hope it stays normal and things don't get much worse ❤️ Lots of love to you and everyone in Turkey from Pakistan 💜🇵🇰
That is why globalist scumbags from IMF should never be trusted... They get you in debt and then fook your economy.
Such a beautiful country with wonderful people It's hard to see them go through such trouble, my prayers are with the people of Sri Lanka.

Exactly, UK is the same, corruption from top to bottom, just the ordinary people struggling it's barbaric here
Absolutely, Japan is the same. Then there's the incompetent like uk, Australia, Canada.
Terry Tapp. Please finish your sentence! "An American" what? Don't be afraid to speak your mind.
America is foreign-owned. The Fed is unelected and unaccountable.
also as an american, our country is nothing more than a corporatocracy being sold out to the highest bidders. the greed of the wealthy elite will destroy us and there is nothing we can do to stop it short of a full on violent revolution.
Will they have general elections to form a completely new government?
@@tabby73 Not at the moment since our country can't afford an election at the moment. The president and prime minister would be elected by a parliament election.
@@ushansajeew7496 I understand. Would take too long also I guess? Hopefully the remaining government can stabilize and improve the situation quickly now!
Beware of the power void you are ripe for communism to move in
@@tabby73 Well, the bad news is that the acting president which is very unpopular among the public has the highest odds of winning the parliamentary election since the acting president is a friend of exiled previous president. And 2/3 of the current parliament members are from the exiled president's party. There are still odds of him losing. Yet , if he would win, civil unrest would begin again.
Thank you for spreading awareness about this situation ❤🔥
One you tuber interviewed a guy who was queuing for cooking gas.
This guy left the que and insisted he got him a cup of tea.

Marcoses of the Philippines should be featured too. That family bankrupted even the country's own central bank.
Have you watched the movie "2012"?

Farming but I think a lot of people now doesn't see farming as a way of living..
"not any citizen of any nations deserves what has happened in Sri Lanka"
Weird because in Greece there is a saying "Nations have the government they deserve"
doesn't sound that absurd once you realize that these are the people who elect their own government and isn't something that they have been imposed upon them to deal with
Well it's oddly true ig.
They can control the educational attainment to keep the masses dumb and they can silence the media and create their own narrative.
So no, it's unfair to say that Sri Lankans deserves this.
Didnt greece also had a debt crisis and economic tumble during the 2000s.
They had the EU to bail them out, Sri lanka doesnt as Pakistan and india is partially to blame in the rise of the tamil tigers.
