AITA For Asking My Friend To Split The Bill Evenly When They Ordered Significantly More Than Me?
    -----
A guy regularly went out to dinner with his friends, and they always split the bill evenly. One friend, Sarah, consistently ordered significantly more food and expensive items, leaving everyone else to subsidize her indulgences. At one dinner, the guy suggested splitting the bill based on what each person ordered, but Sarah dismissed the idea, saying the even split was fair.
Frustrated, the guy decided to teach Sarah a lesson at the next dinner. He ordered a ton of food-far more than he could eat-then insisted on splitting the bill evenly. When Sarah objected, he offered to pay only for what he ate, leaving Sarah to cover her own meal and the extra food he didn’t finish. Sarah ended up with a huge bill, and after the dinner, she complained in their group chat, accusing the guy of breaking their "tradition."
To her surprise, the rest of the group sided with the guy. They revealed they had also only paid for their own meals that night, leaving Sarah to foot the remaining cost. The group admitted they were tired of Sarah’s behavior and called out how the even split only benefited her. Sarah was shocked, but the guy didn’t need to say much-his friends had said it all. From that point on, the group decided to pay only for what they ordered, ending Sarah’s free ride.

I would have just been up front with the situation before going “I’m on a tight budget so I’ll order separate” 🤷🏼‍♂️

In such situations I always remember the quote from a movie “of course you are doing the right thing, but being right doesn’t always end up happy” it is sad but true.
We are internet strangers who know what’s correct but OP will most likely not have their friends anymore ☹️

Ask for separate checks, if Sarah doesn’t like it tough!

There's another way to handle this. Just start things off at the table by announcing that you don't care for any appetizers or shared items as you're not that hungry, and telling the server that you want a separate ticket. That lets everyone know up front that you won't be splitting the bill. Just stand up for yourself from the start so there are no undue expectations of you.
As someone who often just gets a salad or sandwich and tea because that's what I like, my bill usually comes to far less than those of my companions who order steaks or seafood and cocktails and maybe dessert. I don't feel that I should be paying double or more for my meal. If one is part of a group that normally orders comparably, splitting is fine. But when you get someone who regularly orders extravagantly knowing that it won't all be coming out of their pocket, that's a whole different thing.

If I am doing financial streamlining due to car repairs, I will be turning down dinner out until I am more liquid.

NTA but OP has to be the biggest idiot ever in one of these stories she makes no sense through the whole story, when she got called out at the dinner, she should’ve stood up and said I can’t afford the expensive stuff you ordered for yourself (I bet there were others that were in the same camp) and if you don’t got it, you don’t got it. She also should’ve spoken up when everybody was commenting in the group chat but no, instead she chose to cower and cry and then eventually let herself get bullied into giving up $50 that she knew she didn’t owe, that’s why people like Sarah do what they do because they know people like OP will cave eventually, this story just irritated me

    Title misleading and wrong.

This channel has a very bad habit of getting the title completely wrong.
