This scene really captures the whole point of the story. He's alone in the ring fighting by himself, not against somebody. His life wasn't so much about his fights against his opponents in boxing, but about his inner fights... his struggles with himself, his family, and his life
possibly one of the best intros to any movie, ever. sit back and observe, perfect pairing of a visual scene and an audio track. still get shivers when i watch this, and i've seen it maybe 15 times. flawless.
Saw this so long ago at a midnight showing with a tatooed feminist friend who cried at the end and said "That is oneof the greatest works of art of any genre I've ever experienced".
Possibly one of the best opening sequences in film history. Watching Robert Deniro portray Jake Lamotta dancing between the ropes representing music pages, while hearing La traviata. One word...........Brilliant
Perhaps the most beautiful opening sequence in cinematic history. My wife chose this music to be played while we signed the register at our wedding (I'd agreed to it without really listening to her!) - it was the most amazing surprise and still makes me smile (ok, cry......just a bit).
This is perfection on film. A perfect piece of music (one of my favourites) set to a beautiful scene. This is one of my favourite scorsese films of all time.
This song is absolutley beautiful and such a somberly inspiring piece that its a brilliant complement to the powerful visuals of this movie. What a masterpiece.
Sorry to be short, but simply the best intro to a film I ever saw. Back in 1980 I was 15, saw this and was transfixed from second one. And then got to enjoy the best Scorcese/DeNiro film ever (Mean Streets a very very close second) Brilliant
You know, I'm writing from Italy and today I turn 49.. Exactly 31 yrs ago, on the day I turned 18, a friend of my family took at my home Jake La Motta, yes, himself in person, Who was traveling at that time in his country of heritage.. We had wine and italian treats for the whole evening and this wonderful fighter told us a number of his nice jokes in an amusing hybrid ita-american language.. What a great evening I will never forget.. Thanks Jake for being that great, and for making my 18th bir
My great uncle Brian is having this played when he's just about to be cremated, Gonna miss him so much and he loved this movie and I couldn't think of a better song. Rest in piece uncle.
Great movie but a difficult watch. Thank goodness for Scorcese. I'm Scottish and as far as I am concerned he's a national American treasure. His films reflect a universal humanity that exists in all our cultures but he reveals it with such a stunning Italian-American panache and hunanity that is simply breathtaking and highly memorable. And never let it be forgotten that Pesci is as good as DeNiro...
Isn't it nice how sometimes a picture fails at the box office and some time later people realise it's a classic. Vertigo, Raging Bull and Blade Runner are some examples.
I love this film and this opening sequence. This opening reminds people of the great lightweight champion Rocky Kansas. This is what his life was like. Many people get emotional talking about Rocky. Some cant speak at all. Jake Lamotta was honoured to have a "Rocky Kansas" opening to the film about his life.
I don't remember how I found out, but recently I noticed that the ring ropes look exactly like the sheets we use to write down music. It blew my mind. So perfect. Happy birthday Jake LaMotta.
this opening scene is just one example of why de niro/scorcese are the greatest actor/director combination in cinematic history....probably greatest opening to a movie ever....beautiful stuff...
i remember when i first saw this intro when i was a kid. I didn't blink once. It was like i was watching something that i couldn't explain, so i just sat there, with my eyes wide open, trying to take it all in.
If there was a God, and he was a genius in every aspect, and he decided to create a film, and he used raw epicness and power to create the opening sequence, it still wouldn't be as good as this.
Just look at it: no color, no camera movement, no close-ups, no cuts, nothing. Still, one of the most emotionally powerful shots ever. If you want proof that Scorsese is the greatest living filmmaker, look no further.
I remember Actua Soccer 3 having Raging Bull's theme in its opening credits, and it showed my favourite, and hometown club, Barnsley F.C. getting relegated from The Premiership, at the end of 1997- 1998 season, that part of the opening credits made me cry, after losing 1-0 away to Leicester City F.C., at their old ground, Filbert Street.
i dont care wut anybody has to say but this is my all time favorite picture this film just bleeds beauty and pain it capture the human spirit in such a brutal, painful, and real way that u cant feel nothing BUT sorry for Jake and his loved ones truley a masterpiece and a film that stands the test of time Scorsese and Deniro's finest work to date
As great a syntesis between the moving image and music as you are likely to find. Says everything about Jake LaMotta without much at all: passionate, elegant, yet almost vulgar and cheap. Perfect.
Yes. Cavalleria Rusticana is also a novel of one of the gratest sicilian writer: Giovanni Verga. That's why this music was included in the final scenes of THE GODFATHER (IL Padrino)
@PrestonPlante - raging bull was filmed before godfather 3 but i do think godfather 3 has the same music at the end. best opening credits ever this. so simple but brilliant
One of the best opening sequences of a film. "Raging Bull" is probably the pinnacle of boxing cinema. As well-made as it is, I still think "Taxi Driver" is Scorsese's best film.
When i listen to This it makes me cry everytime i tgink about my grandfather i never speaked to him but i see it from his face that hes nice R.I.P granpa..
i knew when I heard the first bars of Mascagni's Intermezzo that this was going to be a great film - I cant help but shed a tear when I see the opening sequence and ending every single time...
The opening credits are great. And to all those who think that "Raging Bull" is a boxing film, it's not, it's a story of one's life and an observation on mankind. -Ian C., 12-year old filmmaker
Butch Coolidge wasn't the main character of the movie nor was boxing the overall theme or plot in the movie. Boxing was just something that was featured partially in the background, as one of the supporting character's occupations. Also, Pulp Fiction is a lot of things if you really think about it. It isn't just a simple crime movie. It incorporates several elements from other genres and even borrows heavily from other films (the Ezekiel 25:17 verse is a reference to Bodyguard Kiba for example)
one of the finest opening credit sequences in movie history
yes sir
This scene really captures the whole point of the story. He's alone in the ring fighting by himself, not against somebody. His life wasn't so much about his fights against his opponents in boxing, but about his inner fights... his struggles with himself, his family, and his life
You're absolutely right. And as the insude of us reflects the outside, his life was fighting also.
His demons
Well explained you are bang on the money..
Deep, but ture
Great point
I watched this last night, and I knew from the second this scene opened I would fall in love with this film, and I did.
+nathan meza I really watched this last night (not 1 year ago) and also realised that this was going to be a film work of art
me too.
You really have to see this movie more than once I think
AND HE DID
This opening shot has more heart and story than 99.9% of the full feature movies coming out nowadays
"No matter what you do,no matter how good you are, there's always Martin Scorsese." (Brian De Palma)
He said that when he was making Scarface and went to see raging bull he thought Scarface was going to be his masterpiece
@@screw_bird Ayo?
Quentin Tarantino tells the best stories lol…
One of the very best films of the 80s, if not #1
possibly one of the best intros to any movie, ever.
sit back and observe, perfect pairing of a visual scene and an audio track.
still get shivers when i watch this, and i've seen it maybe 15 times.
flawless.
My favourite film of all time
A true masterpiece. Scorsese, the generation of the seventies, is the largest film maker of all. Above Coppola, in my opinion.
+mario diez They are...after Stanley Kubrick
"I'm gonna win. There's no way I'm goin' down. I don't go down for nobody."
R.I.P Jake Lamotta.
Martin Scorseses masterpierce, hands down!
Perhaps the most beautiful opening sequence in cinematic history. My wife chose this music to be played while we signed the register at our wedding (I'd agreed to it without really listening to her!) - it was the most amazing surprise and still makes me smile (ok, cry......just a bit).
Truly one of the best opening sequences ever made! This alone makes it a classic.
beautiful, best opening sequence of any
movie I've ever seen
My thoughts exactly.....just perfect!
i get teary
so beautiful!! I wanna walk down the aisle to my wedding to this!
That's gonna be some weird foreshadowing consider how this movie plays out
+Govanmauler The music was already famous before the movie, it's not a soundtrack
An absolute classic. This opening sequence is so beautifully done and moving. The music is amazing.
One of the finest films made. Even if you don't like it you have to admit that. It also did a lot to further the mystique of Italian-Americans.
One of the best opening titles of any film ever. Scorsese is a genius; he'll never be forgotten.
One of the greatest, poetically humble, audacious openings in cinema history. Bravo, Marty, Bravo
Love raging bull, love B&W film. One of my favorites of all time. The attention to the little details....brilliant
Goose bumps everytime...a finest touch in the soul.
This is perfection on film. A perfect piece of music (one of my favourites) set to a beautiful scene. This is one of my favourite scorsese films of all time.
This song is absolutley beautiful and such a somberly inspiring piece that its a brilliant complement to the powerful visuals of this movie.
What a masterpiece.
a tear rolls down my face every time I watch this
this movie is a timeless classic ! and de niro gives one of his best performences (and he had a lot ;-) )
Sorry to be short, but simply the best intro to a film I ever saw. Back in 1980 I was 15, saw this and was transfixed from second one. And then got to enjoy the best Scorcese/DeNiro film ever (Mean Streets a very very close second) Brilliant
Breathtaking mastery of cinema - one locked off shot, no dialogue, no editing and yet Scorsese gives us the essence of a man's life.
Love how the camera is a little panned to the left instead of centred, allowing DeNiro to have move up and down as well as sideways.
Brilliant scene.
One of The Greatest movies I've ever see :)
Violent poetry. One of the greatest films in history.
"Greatest opening intro in movies today."
I second that.

They don't make films like this anymore
My great uncle Brian is having this played when he's just about to be cremated, Gonna miss him so much and he loved this movie and I couldn't think of a better song. Rest in piece uncle.
Deniro gave as good a performance any actor can give in one of the best films ever.
A Obra de Arte já Começa na Cena de entrada , a Melhor da história do Cinema.
This is my most favorite intro to a movie. Everything about it fits perfectly.
Beautiful piece of italian music by mascagni, brings tears to my eyes everytime.
I love this film and this opening sequence. This opening reminds people of the great lightweight champion Rocky Kansas. This is what his life was like. Many people get emotional talking about Rocky. Some cant speak at all.
Jake Lamotta was honoured to have a "Rocky Kansas" opening to the film about his life.
its so musical, even if without the music, the film is musical.. its beautiful.. you immediately feel for the characters
These opening credits alone are better than most movies.
My heart melts when I hear this opening. ;(
One of the best movies ever. Scorsese is awesome and Deniro's acting in this movie was amazing.
One of the best opening sequences in film history.
Best opening of all time. The music is mind-blowing. :)
it takes a truly great director, crew, cast, composer, etc.
to make such a simple shot something so magical
THAT is beautiful
This shot fills me with so many indescribable emotions
I love this music..its beautiful and makes me cry:)when I get married I want this song when I walk down the isle.
Such a motivational theme
I don't remember how I found out, but recently I noticed that the ring ropes look exactly like the sheets we use to write down music. It blew my mind. So perfect.
Happy birthday Jake LaMotta.
one of the best films ever made...my all time favourite..
this opening scene is just one example of why de niro/scorcese are the greatest actor/director combination in cinematic history....probably greatest opening to a movie ever....beautiful stuff...
number 4 on AFI's 100 I believe, and the reason why is this movie touches the human soul like no other movie.
This song makes me think of the ups and downs in life, and the tranquility of redemption, and dying peacefully without regrets.
one of the best films ever made.
Beautiful, iconic scene that captures the essence of the movie.
i remember when i first saw this intro when i was a kid. I didn't blink once. It was like i was watching something that i couldn't explain, so i just sat there, with my eyes wide open, trying to take it all in.
Raging Bull-brilliant film, love the music, Robert De Nero my favourite actor, what more could I want!
Such an amazing begining to a movie. Top 5 movie openings. Another favourite would be Sergio Leone's "The Man With No Name" Trilogy openings.
An absolutely phenomenal film.
Questa si chiama grandezza.
That's magnificence.
LA Critics Circle - Best Picture
NY Times - Best Picture
Time Magazine - Best Picture
AFI - Best Picture
... the list goes on and on
This music feels like what it’s like to be a champion
Intermezzo from Mascagni's opera Cavalleria rusticana
One of the greatest introductions to any movie ever. Scorsese is a living film making legend.
what a flawless movie... de niro is just amazing as lamotta.
If there was a God, and he was a genius in every aspect, and he decided to create a film, and he used raw epicness and power to create the opening sequence, it still wouldn't be as good as this.
the greatest boxing film of all time ,back in the day these men were true warriors
Just look at it: no color, no camera movement, no close-ups, no cuts, nothing. Still, one of the most emotionally powerful shots ever. If you want proof that Scorsese is the greatest living filmmaker, look no further.

My favorite movie, hands down.
On my list of top 10 movies I ever saw. De Niro's perfomance and Scorsese's homage to Italian neo realism has rarely been equaled and never surpassed
Cavalleria rusticana
i dont care wut anybody has to say but
this is my all time favorite picture
this film just bleeds beauty and pain
it capture the human spirit in such a brutal, painful, and real way that u cant feel nothing BUT sorry for Jake and his loved ones

Love this film. Fo'gedaboutit!
Just the theme gives me goose-bumps.
talkin about an opening scene that sets the pace for the rest of the film...perfect
When i listen to This it makes me cry everytime i tgink about my grandfather i never speaked to him but i see it from his face that hes nice R.I.P granpa..
god damn, this makes me cry, and i never cry, i absolutely adore this movie
This film is So Powerful this Opening Sequence made me cry
A wonderful contrast between the music and the imminent violence of the sport... Great movie.
I thought the Godfather was the best movie ever till I saw this movie. It still makes me shed a year every time I watch it and I'm a 26 year old guy.
Yep... Great song and opening to a fine film..
Would have love to have seen Taxi Driver in black and white..
i knew when I heard the first bars of Mascagni's Intermezzo that this was going to be a great film - I cant help but shed a tear when I see the opening sequence and ending every single time...
The opening credits are great. And to all those who think that "Raging Bull" is a boxing film, it's not, it's a story of one's life and an observation on mankind.
-Ian C., 12-year old filmmaker
"Raging Bull" is Martin Scorsese's masterpiece. And it is probably the greatest american film ever made. :)
Wow man that's deep but extremely accurate. I agree with you entirely. Most of us can relate to the film on some level
Butch Coolidge wasn't the main character of the movie nor was boxing the overall theme or plot in the movie. Boxing was just something that was featured partially in the background, as one of the supporting character's occupations. Also, Pulp Fiction is a lot of things if you really think about it. The acting in this movie. It don't feel like acting. It's like you're peeking in on the lives of these people.
Greatest opening in the history of film
