    I'm curious to see that you're cutting before full colonization. I've always waited for full colonization of the bags/buckets. What's your colonization time with this, if you don't mind me asking? As I think about it, does the FAE exchange, i.e., allowing more oxygen into the mix, help to speed up the colonization rate before cutting? What are your thoughts on this?

      Great question - it depends on variety. Pink oyster is usually ~12 days, other oysters are closer to 3 weeks. We cut holes in the bags for better O2 exchange.

    I've seen videos of farmers in Thailand growing with this technique, but the temperatures there will be much higher than what you recommend in this video. So I'm curious if they might be using a different strain of Oyster Mushroom adapted to the higher temperatures, or if the higher temperatures might just mean a lower than optimal growing conditions and thus lower than optimal yield?

    I've tried it at home using rice strow but after two weeks I found no micilium colonized inside my baglog and it contain much water and with bed smell. Then I just guess it was maybe I fill my bag too early and still too much water contain inside the strow. My question is.. (is it true to say that is becaous there are still too much water inside the rice strow. Or what?? Please give me your brief explaination!!. My Hello from Indonesia

    Your transfer of grain to straw obviously works well for you but you have no laminar flow hood, exposed skin inside the bag along with other techniques that would almost certainly contaminate lots of other strains and methods, I am just wondering how this works gor you guys ? Do you often have contamination issues etc?

      Oysters are so aggressive a low-tech approach works well. For production on a sawdust substrate you can still get away with a low tech methods if you use a high inoculation rate. We produce all of our spawn in a lab setting, but many people do not have a flow hood and still are able to produce many mushrooms by just following basic hygiene rules (ie washing hands, not breathing into your bags, etc)

    do you not cover them in a bag during the incubation period. would the only conditions your are looking for during incubation is keeping the temps right? and darkness? not really humidity? Thanks for answering

    I shock the straw with hydrated lime in water and I have never had a problem with wild spores taking over. A lot easier than heating

      Lime is a great alternative. We have noticed more stable production over the long-term with heat pasteurization, but lime is certainly a popular choice!

      @@FieldandForestProducts it worked for me the two times I did it and need to place a order and grow some more. I put a drain valve on a 55 gl. plastic Barrel I cut the top out of and place straw in a feed bag like in the. I video. I would need to look in my mushroom book again and see quantity of lime used. I am thinking about stretching out production this time and doing smaller batches. I might then just cook the straw in my turkey fryer. Oyster spawn is pretty aggressive and takes over limed straw pretty fast. Small batches heat it I agree.

    I understand pre harvest grain harvest they typically desiccant spray to kill the plant to make easier harvesting. Glyphosate is typically used. Will that transfer to the mushroom

      There hasn't been any study specifically on that subject matter, so I cannot say for sure. We use organic straw here in order to side-step the issue.

    Great video! I wanted to ask if oyster mushrooms let out a stink because i am considering growing a bucket in my apartment. Also does light play a role in the production process?

      They definitely have a smell, but it's more "mushroomy" than stinky, so I guess it depends on what you consider stinky! I'd start small and see how you feel about it. Light does play a factor - indirect sunlight for several hours a day is all you need.

      A bag can last for 2-3 months with the harvests coming in flushes every 7-10 days.

      Once the temperature exceeds the 180 mark the sugars in the straw will start to caramelize, leading to a higher contamination rate.

    Nice Video! I can't find organic straw, does pasteurizing the straw get rid of the GMO sprays on it? Also is there any way to use less plastic - I'd like to take more of a regenerative closed loop system approach. What about using corn or sorghum stalks that are dried, then chipped or shredded, then pasteurized? Thanks for sharing!

      Wheat is not a GMO crop and is not sprayed with anything. Don't over complicate it. Look up lime "pasteurization" it works fine

      To close the loop I would use the 5 gallon buckets which can be rinsed and re-used. As for the GMO question, wheat and oat straw is not GMO so you're good to go there! You can use sorghum or corn stalks (corn however is heavily GMO in a lot of cases) if chopped and pasteurized- however, the yield will be slightly less.

      Have a look around you, see what is going for free, I have just had great success with fallen bamboo leaves and a warm weather oyster strain - cold pasteurised with wood ash and lime
      I would steer clear of big AG , you just don't know what chemicals and fungicides they are using and it will always be in your mind when eating your produce

      They absolutely get in, unless you're working in front of a LFH. The mycelium outgrows competition to be the dominant life form within the bag. It's just a race, as is life!

      Not with this method- if you're not using heat pasteurization then yes, you will want to use lime. But keep in mind that a lime soak isn't a true pasteurization so there tends to be a higher contamination rate.

      You can, but we recommend using open spawn in the refrigerator and then using it within two weeks.

      It's definitely possible. The biggest hurdle will be dealing with the substrate and actual mushrooms drying out if there is wind. For incubation I would suggest draping the bags with a tarp so prevent moisture loss, and for fruiting I would make sure they're in a protected location.

      Straw is going to be more productive, but what a person should do will really depend on what you have access to. If I had to choose one over the other though, I would opt for straw.

      Over 180 the sugars in the straw will start to caramelize, leading to contamination

      How long it takes will very much depend on how much spawn to straw you used. There's a variety of things that could be happening but I would suggest putting a tarp or bag over the straw until the tub is colonized and once you notice strong spawn run then introduce airflow.

      @@stevenprice4810 Ah. This video is only for Oyster mushroom strains. We have never grown that particular mushroom, but you will likely need a more robust substrate than just straw. Often a manure based substrate is used.

      no. the straw should be soaked but no excess water in the bag. During colonizing if your bag is drying out you could mist the holes a bit, but i would not "water" them like a plant.

      It depends on how you want to keep the bag around. They will continue to produce mushrooms for quite awhile, but each flush will get smaller with a longer wait time between flushes. Generally we keep them around for 5-6 flushes before sending them to the compost pile.

    Do you think it would work to put the straw in a 5 gallon bucket and fill the bucket with boiling water, then let it sit overnight? That method works with aspen chips.
    I don't have a big pot to boil straw in.

      We have done that before and it does work, however, it is more prone to contamination so you ultimately do not get as many mushrooms as you would with pasteurization.
