Incredible as it may seem, I was doing work experience at Taronga when this episode was filmed. The tortoise is a special memory - I can remember them filming it. This tortoise was one of the two education centre tortoises that were let out each day to wander around the education centre area. Their names were Number One and Number Two. I think it's Number One who appears at 12:03 - you can see a number painted on the top of the shell, I think it's a 1? I remember them filming a lot more tortoise footage - Number Two eating lettuce in his hutch etc. One day we lost Number Two, if you can believe it. Took us hours to find him (or her, I forget) - turned out he'd wandered into one of the classrooms and gone to sleep under a teacher's desk! Those pesky tortoises... you take your eye off 'em for a moment or two (or 67) and they disappear... Also, everyone was like "OMG John Hamblin is here... he's entered the property... he's at the reptile house! HE'S COMING THIS WAY!" Dude was a megastar among the Play School faithful back in the late 80s and early 90s.
I think this video was originally packaged in 1991 with The Altogether Show from 1983 and then the 1981 episode of At The Zoo featuring Elaine Hudson, Jan Kingsbury and Don Spencer. And then repackaged in 1993 or 1994 with this episode replacing the 1981 episode.
I love how, in this era of Play School, how they left in all the mistakes and bloopers, ie John falling into the bush. His improvisation to get back on track was gold. Also in the intro to the seal show, the mums having a laugh at John when he fluffs his seal impersonation. We showed this to a friend's 2 kids when they wanted to see animals, they are 10 and 8 and they just loved it, they loved John and their Mum cracked up at his antics.
These days all episodes of "Play School" are filmed in the studio they are filmed in they aren't filmed at different locations (like a zoo or a beach).
