  • This is a 1987 documentary about the great electric violin player. I transferred this from an original VHS copy I bought on eBay. The tape is in stereo, but my VCR is only mono, so I apologize for hurting one of your ears. ;)

I remember An Airplane concert at Fillmore East. Grace came out for about one song, pregnant, got sick, Paul went with her. The Airplane Concert turned into a Hot Tuna Concert. First time i saw Papa John. He stole that show. Nov. 28, 1970 ? Not The Last time. Jefferson Starship incarnations, Hot Tuna. I was 14 and considered myself really lucky to be exposed to all of that! Great times! Interesting things, Music! Airplane Concerts in Central Park with 500,000 people. Hot Tuna at the Hollywood Sportatorium. Florida '71. That man was a great guy.

I had the privilege of seeing Papa John perform in Montreal(Old Montreal) in 1974 or 1975 in what used to be an old bank with two large columns in the middle. He played forever, three long sets, and after each set he would change his outfit and come out to meet and greet everyone in the audience. He took the time to speak to everyone. What a great gentleman. And the music was rock to counrty, and everything in between.

I met Papa John when he played at a club I worked at in San Diego (Diego's) and had the pleasure of spending time with he and his wife. Amazingly down to earth and still today I don't understand how they mingled with drug hazed days of Starship. I later met up with him in Maine when a friend was lucky enough to book him to play at Evergreen mnt in Maine. His skills were far above most of those he played with. Papa reminded me of Stephan Grappelli and Jean Luc.

🙀 A great documentary ~ thank you! I was able to see Papa John with the Airplane and later with Starship several times. The last time that I was able to see Papa John was with Paul Kantner's "Wooden Ships" Tour at Musicians Exchange in Ft. Lauderdale, FL on 12-30-92. ☮

What's the name of the song at 13:20?

I believe that's "Git Fiddler" from Jefferson Starship's Red Octopus album.
