    I purchased a pair of Aperion Audio MKII Planar-Ribbon Super Tweeters, and when first playing a CD on my brand new DENON DCD-900NE CD player that I purchased at the same time, I heard a continuous hissing sound that did not show up on the 4 tweeters per speaker that I have. Thank goodness is was just a bad CD recording. My old CD player had just died. It was a DENON DCD-900 that I had purchased back in 1987. It lasted 37 years, and that was why I purchased another DENON CD player. I did have to replace 2 rubber belts over those 37 years. One was to open the tray. The other one was for laser head movement. I also had to re-lubricate the lasers slide rails. The last two instantly fixed a track skipping problem that had cropped up.

    • @helifynoe9930
      @helifynoe9930 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      By the way, the belt for the tray came from an old dead cassette player in my junk pile drawer, and the belt for the laser module came from my waterproof high bean flashlight. I put the old laser belt in the flashlight, and it worked just fine as a water seal. LOL

    Steve,
    I appreciate your candid review of these supplemental hyper tweeters. I have heard similar responses from audiophiles who have used them- some had success, some did not. Saying the integration process was continual and similar to integrating a subwoofer on the bottom end was an excellent way to describe it. Peace !

    Like many of your videos Steve. If you ever run out of ideas, let me know. Some say I never run out of ideas. Here are some possible ideas for discussion that I thought of.
    *Which new lps that you see in Barnes & Noble and other stores have really good sound? Is there a very dependable non-audiophile label whose re-relases consistently sound as good or even way better than if you fished up an orig. pressing?
    *A live (or taped) blind listening test evaluating if something is worthwhile.
    *Tweak accessories.
    *An audiophile brain teaser crossword puzzle. Entertaining & informative. You would ne surprised just how many people regularly do crossword puzzles.
    *An audio trivia contest (with a prize maybe).
    *Lesser known and underrated audio companies.
    *Visual demonstrations of how to do something or build something like the Ron Hazelton show.
    *Improving room acoustics,(actual visual demonstration).

    I think I’ve finally realised something. I can’t be bothered ruining the experience of listening to music, to an actual piece, sometimes a specific performance, but music generally, by persistent futzing with tech. I do realise that your attempt was to test the speaker, but…the more I listen to the agonising parts of the testing process, the more I realise that I want listening to music to be a passive experience when it comes to tech. Am I a Luddite? Hell no. I’m a 40 year veteran of film and television. I’ve used more tech that even now is still bleeding edge than most people. I’ve developed in one way or another the systems that took us from pure analogue to pure digital and then up to film level resolution and beyond. I’m glad that people like you, Steve are here, because you do the sort of stuff I did for years for myself, my coworkers and my clients, saving me endless hours of agonising over which bits go best where, connected how. And, I have to confess, I’m glad it’s not me any longer, but I’m even more glad it’s someone like you, not some of the smarmy shits that attempt to do the same thing without your charm and smarts. Thank you!

      Absolutely! I had a lot of fun in the 1970s and 80s, but eventually being able to just relax and only enjoy the music became my primary goal. I listened to Steve’s review with a sense of relief that since I lost the top octave this device wasn’t for me. Yet it brought back memories of hearing a friend’s Decca ribbon for the first time, and helping another friend decide between the Celestion HF2000 and STC4001 super tweeters.

  • @weeooh1

    The reason most speakers are designed with one tweeter only is to avoid comb filtering. That explains the smearing or blurring of the sound Steve mentioned earlier. It may sound OK at the highest frequencies (above 12khz) with some speakers that are not strong at those frequencies, but usually the negatives outweigh the positives with extra tweeters.

    • @shodan6401
      @shodan6401 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely perfectly stated. I think that I called it baffle step loss, but comb filtering is the correct term, thank you. And yes, the negative effects far outweigh the positives.

    • @willbrink
      @willbrink ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you move them backward and forward, can you fix/avoid the comb filtering issues? People seem to love/hate these things, I wonder if it comes down to time taken to set up?

      @bryanbassett2110 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@shodan6401baffle step loss refers to the fact that at some frequencies the baffle amplifies the signal, and at other (lower) frequencies it does not

    I remember playing with super tweeters like the RTR ESR6 way back in the day. A box larger than many of today's bookshelf speakers with 6 RTR electrostatic panels in a somewhat curved layout.
    Then the piezo tweeter hit. No crossover needed. Extreme high end. Cheap and easy to add. Put a resistor in series to match level.
    Problem with all super tweeters is as you found trying to work with the KEFs. It is impossible at those frequencies to get the distance between the drivers close enough to stop comb filtering.

    I am running these Aperion’s with the original LS50s (non Meta) and find they definitely add that missing element on the top end to these speakers. The LS50s have a great middle and sense of space but I found them lacking in air and the bottom end. A sub is a given to get some slam from them but I was also underwhelmed by the somewhat dull high end. I found the Aperion’s online and figured I would give them a try. Aperion has a great return policy so I could always send them back. I was careful not to set it up to compete with the Uni Q tweeter in the Kefs so I really aimed for a subtle blending above 12k. I ended up setting them to 14k and - 5db. Really aiming at adding some sparkle to the top end. This produced what I was looking for. I started to hear well defined cymbal attack, the pick hitting the guitar string, more presence and breath of vocals. I also found they produced a taller soundstage. Maybe not to everyone’s taste but I felt it made an excellent speaker that much more exciting to listen to. I listen to a lot of acoustic jazz and jazz vocals as well as electronic, dub, alt country with some punk and 60s, 80s, 90s rock thrown in. The better recorded, less produced and compressed the source, the more the tweeters improvement is apparent.
    Now I know Steve did not like the pairing with the LS50 Metas, and I don’t know if the reason I like the pairing in my system so much is the difference between the original and newer metas. All I can say is once dialed in, they may work for you.

    Way back in about 1978 I bought a pair of Quad ESL 63’s from Sound Components in Coral Gables FL to which I added a Sequerra Ribbon Tweeter believing the Quads weren’t resolving enough in the upper band. I got the idea because at the time Sound Components had the HQD system setup which consisted of 4 Quad ESL 63’s stacked 2 on each side with a Decca Ribbon Tweeter in the middle of the stacked paired Quads. The system also had 2 Gigantic Hartley Sub Woofers. I had to rig a board sticking out from the top of the Quads at a right angle where I could the Sequerra’s and slide to and fro to get their position proper.

    One thing everyone should try if they have a super tweeter, is to turn the tweeter around, so it faces the front wall (the wall behind the speaker), I remember when I had the Townshend audio's super tweeter, I tried it with the Apogee stand mount speakers, with the tweeter facing the front wall, I felt the music sounded more spacious, Of course it will depend on the set up of the main speakers, but I think it worth a try, great review, thanks.

This got me thinking ..... some expensive speaker makers for example Von Schweikert put an extra tweeter on the back of the VR Ultra model speakers facing the front wall i.e. in the opposite direction of the other drivers ...... they claim to do it for creating more ambiance. Using a sine wave generator and an spl meter proved I was producing audio at 100db above 10k I heard nothing and rolling back the crossover to approach my upper limit was very unpleasant and even painful. Older guys don't bother. You may actually do more damage than good.

    You can get the same thing by simply turning up the treble control (if your amplifier doesn't have tone controls, Schiit makes them). The thing is, if the speaker's designer thought the high end was deficient, they would use a different tweeter, or a supertweeter in the first place. If the speakers you have don't have enough treble, you bought the wrong speakers, and a treble control box would be far cheaper than these supertweeters.

    • @roadfordays
      @roadfordays 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. The difference between these and subwoofers is that decent speakers are perfectly capable of reproducing to 20k and beyond. If you want more treble, just turn up the treble. The speaker will respond. But very few decent speakers output anything below 40 hz. You can EQ all you want and you'll never get them to dig deeper, they'll just distort more and more. So subs are truly necessary to reproduce the full spectrum of musical instruments. This is just an incredibly crude and expensive way of EQing your high end.

      Yep, some good points.
      But I feel Steve missed the boat... as I would've explored implementing them via reflecting the energy up off the ceiling, off sidewalls, or perhaps firing backward, angled up so it ultimately encounters the listening position.
      Sure, it's mere conjecture, but I'm guessing some systems in some rooms would really benefit from such an approach.
      Also, oddly of all places, I've seen super-tweeters integrated into a recording/mastering studio's big mains rig.
      Myself, no direct experience in decades. I recall experimentation in the 80's in our first home... but I abandoned them.

      @@FOH3663 I have supertweeters (JBLs) on the top of my very large mains, pointing 45 degrees toward the rear wall. I use them for added ambience for some recordings, especially classical which more often than not can use a bit more top end 'air'. So yes, they absolutely have a place - that place is just not sticking on top of speakers, pointing toward the listening position, with speakers with already good HF.

      No you can't achieve the same thing by simply turning up the treble. If you turn up the treble you are boosting the dB in all frequencies above a certain level. Supertweeters add high frequencies above say 10k or whatever setting is chosen which gives more air and space - a different thing.

    I wonder if anyone can shed some light on my Japanese super tweeter. I bought it in 2017. The brand is Highcraft HC ST075 and is handmade.
    The specifications are:
    8ohm 80W
    92 dB/W/m
    12Khz - 30Khz
    6dB/oct
    Size: 140Wx75Hx80Dmm
    There is a knob which I assume is a volume control as there is no indication. What I don't understand is that the sound is too soft and tinny. I have to turn it right up to get a decent sound but still not happy with the sound quality.
    Someone told me to change to a larger capacitor. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    If all super tweeter sounds similar to mine, I think I probably give it a pass. Or there is something that I have missed.

They are still on top of the Linton's. I don't leave them on all of the time, it is really up to the quality of the recording a lot. I have some records that I leave the tweeters off. The other records it just brings them to life. I hear little chimes and brushes on the snare drum I'd never really noticed before. Not planning on getting rid of them like I have some things. Also have an Emotiva RS 11 reaching out for the Bottom . A bit overkill I know. About a 200 SQ ft living RM. The linton's offer a lot bass wise , but similar to the super tweeters result , there's more on the top and bottom left to explore.

      I had 2 SVS s b 1000's. Had 2 REL tx5i's( I think that's right) . I think I'm in my 9th sub. Gotta be happy at some point , ya think ? Lol. What you powering your Linton's with ?

      @jerryjohnson4625 I have no experience myself but 8khz seems rather low, does it not Intefere/compete too much with that frequency range already produced by the linton? I had a little Rel Quake sub before getting the svs, this was no pairing for the Lintons though. Great for smaller bookshelves or sealed speakers but the roll off was too shallow for the Linton so ended up repeating a lot of the frequency range already covered by the linton, plus it didn't dig much deeper. I use a Teac A-H500 Amplifier. Very juicy for its form size and power rating. Have had the lintons rocking out at very loud volumes and have never experienced any audible clipping. Did you check the impedance after hooking them up the way you did , it appears if both speakers were 8 ohm this would make a 16 ohm load , or wiring black to red and red to black a 4 ohm load. this also would have a effect on your amp and different tonal qualities
    would it just be cheeper to find a better speaker than buy a 1k supper tweeter even a 1960 old stacked pair of klh model 9 would sound better . they are large and power hungry and run 16 ohm load . A nice old FUTTERMAN OTL amp would really sound sweet. You could use a David Berning and QUAD speakers, or a Martin Logan. A Krell ML2 for low power worked well . have you tried tri amping with a active or passive crossover like Audio Research

The crude controls for adjusting crossover are laughably inadequate for the job of properly matching the real speakers and having two tweeters covering the same frequency space is an absolute horror zone. For once, I have no desire at all to hear what you listened to, your welcome to it, and you might just have well as listened to your speakers through some open backed headphones.

    I had to watch this twice. I have a feeling you treat this like a Sub-Woofer with some trepidation of it's limited value, that depending on those that lean into component ownership in speaker additions.
    Over all it seems what is added depends on what is missing by other very good speakers. What is missing on the other hand is what attracted the person who owned those speakers wanted. It appears that the BEST RESULTS were when what was added by 'Aperion' tweeters help to create a 'new speaker,' so to speaker, like the 'Grand LF-6' which took on a new character never designed to be as it sounded with the 'Aperion.'
    My problem is would the 'Aperion' be better with with HIGH END additions or mid-Cost Additions. I don't think you'd want to place this on top of a sub-$1,000 dollar speaker if the Super-Tweeter is about the same price. It seems you'd just combine the two amounts of money you would spend and buy a Much Better Speaker..., so it's got to go with something more expensive to make much sense to buy to me.... it's subjective right?

    I'm really puzzled. How can you avoid problem of cancelations then? By trying positions. So the task is to try to avoid signal of the main tweeeter and aim in such a way that supetweeter and tweeter get to you ear without crossing each other. This must be a joke. Or is it that who cares about cancelations, as long as it is a bit different it counts :) Just buy yourself speakers with ribbon tweeters instead of creating problems you know nothing about.

    @shodan6401 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    First of all, this is why the upper end of a speaker's frequency response is so important and should be stated in any review.
    Secondly, when running another tweeter in conjunction with the main tweeter, you immediately introduce baffle step loss, that can completely nerf your speaker's performance. The effect of baffle step loss can be further compounded by the natural reflections of your room.
    While it may be a neat gimmick in certain circumstances, I cannot imagine a situation where such an addition would do anything other than degrade from the overall performance of a quality system, unless you were to completely bypass the tweeter in your main speakers. And then you would have a tweeter and mid that are so far apart physically that you would be introducing a whole new set of problems.
    As I said, a neat gimmick, but a complete detriment to your system's performance overall and potential buyers should consider this and make an informed decision.
