This song reminds me of myself, who on March 11, 12 years ago, in front of the TV in my home near Tokyo, screamed and fell to my knees on the living room floor as I watched the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, where I had played a lot with my cousins since I was little, and my maternal grandfather's home town swallowed up by the tsunami. I also clearly remember that my mother's face and lips, who was standing next to me at the time, instantly turned blue. I can also remember as if it were only yesterday how my mother, her sisters, and grandmother desperately tried to call their relatives in the northeastern part of the country again and again until they were able to get through to them and find out if they were safe. When I listen to this song, I think of it as a requiem for the huge number of the dead who lost their lives in the earthquake and tsunami, and I try to listen to it quietly with my eyes closed, but I always remember the day after the earthquake when I read in the newspaper, "300 people were found dead on a beach famous as a popular swimming beach for children. Most of them had been swept to the coast from towns far inland by the tsunami, and they had died after being swallowed by the waves that came over several high-altitude mountains. And this is not just in Miyagi Prefecture. Scenes like this are occurring not only in Miyagi Prefecture, but throughout the six northeastern prefectures. Many towns and villages have been destroyed by the tsunami. Bodies have also been found pushed up by the tsunami, along with cars and motorcycles, up to telegraph poles and tall buildings. Such a catastrophe is unprecedented, but this is not a movie. This is a reality that is happening right now in Japan. I recall the nightmarish scene of that morning when I stood for a while in a daze, clutching with trembling hands a newspaper that read. I am sure that none of the victims who died that day really wanted to say to their family and friends, "I'm home. Thanks for worrying about me, but I'm back safe and sound." and they would have wanted to go back to their own homes where their families were waiting for them. I long for this requiem to comfort their souls.
