  • One of Hollywood’s preeminent craftsmen, William Wyler brought a rigorous technical perfectionism and penetrating emotional insight to some of the richest, most complex human dramas of the studio era. Infamous among actors and crew for his exacting standards-which typically entailed doing countless retakes until he was satisfied with a scene-Wyler’s meticulous methods paid off in masterpieces like DODSWORTH, THE LITTLE FOXES, and THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES, powerful, character-driven works grounded in a vivid psychological realism. Working with frequent collaborators like Bette Davis, whom he directed in some of her greatest performances, and cinematographer Gregg Toland, with whom he developed his deep-focus visual style, Wyler was a consummate master of the medium who pushed everyone in his orbit to rarely surpassed heights of excellence.

The cinema of William Wyler is simply electrifying. There is a reason why Lubitsch revered him, and why Welles lauded 'The Best Years of Our Lives', and it bought tears to Billy Wilder hard heart.

The Best Years of Our Lives is a beautiful, honest, and uplifting story about troubled men trying to simply survive and live. No cornball sentiment or artificial drama, it's all flesh and blood. The airfield sequence alone makes that movie a masterpiece.

Wyler served in WW2. In The Best Years of Our Lives he could relate to the 3 returning veterans as Wyler had lost much of his hearing, suffered PTSD and was wealthy and could relate to the Frederic March's banker.

The Best Years of Our Lives is the best film of the 1940s.
Billy Wilder went as far as calling Best Years “the best directed film I've ever seen in my life."

TCM doesn’t own the first 60 years of film history. Though they do support it a lot.

If anyone hasn't seen Mrs Miniver the line at 0:48 is meant to be ironic about "men going out and doing things while women look after the house" as the audience knows she had just met a downed German pilot. It's a funny scene that ends with him playfully spanking her after she tells him about it. Dunno how they got away with that when the Hayes code had them sleeping in separate beds!
