I always assumed the longer life expectancy is mostly because Americans need to go into crippling medical debt just to see the doctor about a cold so most of them avoid seeking treatment for an illness

Under PM Bob Hawke in the 1980s, university education was free! Then a later govt introduced the HECS fees which put a decades long debt on those who had used public funds to get their degree. Put a hex on their income for many years

Tasmania has the cleanest water, freshest barley malt and hops, and the cleanest air in the world, and Scots migrants too! 😀🥃 Australiam education institutions have very high ratings and are very popular overseas, you can pay later when you have a regular appropriate income! Yes, many under 30s still go to the UK before Uni! There are huge disparities between what average Americans on wages pay in tax, and the extra cost of healthcare and retirement funds, from their gross income compared to most salary packaged Americans! We are certainly better off in general! We also have paid holidays, leave loading, paid overtime, allowances, long service leave, maternity leave, stress & compassionate leave, less stress and more social activities, much more friendly work environment - all unusual in the US! 👍🇦🇺

I love how this video gives all the reasons why we do things better then other places but most of these things are due directly to safety measures implemented for all public spaces, strict laws and persistent to the point of annoying informational advertising campaigns, look up the (slip, slop, slap and slide) commercials or the (fence the pool) swimming safety commercials. Even with these measure in place 1 in 2 Aussies will get cancer in there lifetime, not joking that's half of us.

All Uni students have a fee to pay when they graduate (HECS fee) which is deducted from your wage by the tax office but not until you reach a certain pay threshold which is pretty generous.

That whisky is going for $24,000 on ebay. That's the 2014 barrel. Other years go for $1500 - $5000. The distillery makes other whisky's as well that are $1,000 and under. I'd shelve it if i owned it. As good as it might taste, Whisky is a good investment, it'll always go up in value.

All degrees have fees attached to them that must be paid, either as you learn or accumulated as debt to be paid after graduation. Overall, the fees are much lower than the US. If you choose to 'learn now, pay later', fees are recouped by the government from your pay once your annual salary reaches a certain level. The objective is to not cripple you with education debt. That said, due to their financial circumstances, many former students do not pay or pay very little of their student debt back. My understanding is that little or nothing is done about these cases by government.

Australia also has a lot of proactive public health and safety initiatives that Americans would decry. Australia adopted RBT, seatbelt and helmet laws in the 70s. Some US states not for 30 more years.
The road toll for fatalities - Australia 1200 for 26m in 2023. Thats not much more than 1970. The US is ~1900 for 300 million. It's roughly double per capita. People complain about speed and redlight cameras, random booze and drug testing, mobile phone detectors, cameras but they have an impact.

Here's an interesting article from yesterday about Australia's Covid response, criticised by many as too severe. You were 33 more likely to die in the UK and 46 times more likely to die in the US. While Australia has suffered some catchup deaths after reopening, keeping people locked down until everyone had the chance to immunize has kept hundreds of thousands alive and not suffering long Covid.

When Americans leave home to further their education it’s usually to another state, miles away from their home, where they usually settle and only see their family and parents for the holidays. Australians mostly live and work close to home and family and of course friends. Like European families our children grow up with extended family which to us is so important.

G'day Mate! Here in OZ students have HECS loans for their fees etc (Higher Education Contribution Scheme) and unlike in the USA where you have to sy=tart repaying after about 3 months of your graduation etc here a student will only start repaying when they earn over $51,500 pa and then you only repay at the rate of 2.5% and also unlike the USA there is no interest to accrue on the loans. SO the more you earn the faster the loan is repaid... Cheers!

Why Australian cities are so good to live in, We don't have school shootings every 2nd week.
Why Australian's are so happy, We don't have school shootings every 2nd week. Plus in Australia, every day is hump day not just one day in the centre of the week.
Why Australian's have more money, The Australian money has lots of colour like a rainbow, even the coins and we have more room under the bed to keep it, because Australian's don't have school shooting guns to hide. How can you not have more money when you get paid a living wage and you are not forced to tip.

For that wealth statistic it included retirement savings and assets, Everyone gets 9% of their salary put aside in a retirement fund so that helps that along, but anyone who's own's a house in Sydney more than 10 years will probably have over 1 million in equity in their house, so that will skew the average much higher.
If you did the same calculation excluding people who live in Sydney and Melbourne it would be much lower.

  • @paultyrrell1878
    @paultyrrell1878 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

The wealth statistic is true, although perhaps a little misleading. Australians are wealthy (on average relative to other countries) because retirement savings are compulsory and privatised. In most other countries savings for retirement are either voluntary, or the state or your employer pays your pension. House prices also contribute to household wealth, and as others have said, our house prices are insane. In relation to student debt, we only pay 25% of the course fee which you can either pay upfront or take as a loan, the rest is paid by the government. International students pay full fees of course.

We are very high on median wealth and way above the USA. But USA has a higher mean (average) wealth because much of the wealth is in the hands of a few. Gini coefficient is used to show this. It is a measure of how the wealth is spread. If it is evenly distributed in the population, then you get a much better Gini coefficient. USA has one of the worst Gini coefficients in the world, but their mean wealth is very high.

I didn't know about the whisky award, but there are several areas in Australia where the climate and the soils combine to produce world class wines.
Our health care is so much better than the system in the USA, that it isn't funny anymore. I've even seen occasional stories about medically induced bankruptcies in the US. I don't know how truthful they are, but in Australia, hospital treatment is free to eligible citizens.

Australian's have a superannuation fund for every hour worked in your life, it's part of your wage that your employer pays 😊, Australian's have more paid public holidays annual leave and sick leave entitlements, our health care compared to most countries is better, when the bill at a hospital is free, I have had four major operations and the only cost was the trip to hospital 😊 and Perth is the best city in Australia, as you can still afford to buy a house on one income, 😊

the number one thang australia does "better than the u.s." is geography. nice tiny population almost all living along the coasts and no 3,000 mile border with a third world narco state in addition to no third world island nations (ie. haiti, cuba, etc.) right off the coast.
i would also add i'm yankee but i lived in wollongong, nsw fer 2 1/2 years with an australian gf and if australians are supposedly so much "healthier" than americans you'd never know it by living there. obesity in oz is BAD and they eat just as much junk food (and drink and smoke far more) than americans.

I've struggled with the whole gender inequality battle for as long as I can remember. I think we're SO conditioned in our roles, that people don't even notice when it's happening right in front of them. Coming from a family of strong women, perhaps I'm just more aware, but it is alive and well sadly. Things are much better than they were, but we have a long way to go. I notice almost every time I'm with a group of men, that what I have to say is largely ignored or not considered. This is typical of the "group mentality". They listen to each other with a different, and much greater level of respect. Recently I made a suggestion regarding a problem, only to be totally ignored, until one of the men made the same suggestion. When he said it though, the rest of the men all agreed and said it was a great idea. When I said, that I'd said that 10 minutes ago, they told me I hadn't !! They never heard me they said. It makes you feel "less than" and unimportant. Or not worthy of an opinion. And of course, if you try to push home the message, then you're being "a typical bloody woman. A "drama queen". Then of course, you have the more serious issue of more than 1 woman a week still being murdered due to domestic violence. It's 2 in the UK and they have something like, 4 times the population. This should have us all on our feet and screaming for justice. It should be totally unacceptable, yet there's no outcry. Why?
It makes no sense to me, and now more than ever we need our brothers to stand up and speak out amongst other men. I still often hear men get upset when women talk about this topic, and use the "not all men " argument. Again, why be so defensive? Of course it's not all men, but that's not an argument for keeping quiet about it. The very fact that some men having their feelings hurt seems more important to them than woman fighting to try to save woman's lives, should prove there's still a huge problem. It's such a complex topic, this is way longer than what I wanted to write. But this is trying to just get the basic point across. Thanks so much for asking the question. It matters....
