- Students sing a school song tradition, "One Little Candle," with their self-made lanterns. This month, the fifth-grade students embarked on a multicultural learning journey. In a cross disciplinary study of literacy, culture, and science, students read several articles about the ways different cultures and faiths celebrate during the winter. They learned about Hanukkah, Kwanza, Three Kings Day, and the winter solstice. They practiced morphology, learned new vocabulary, and most significantly, gained an appreciation of different faiths and cultures. We learned about the similarities among the different cultures - such as the importance of light, food, and family.
