  • Prague, Czechoslovakia. Footage shot in the 'Prague Spring of freedom', shortly before the Russian invasion is seen with a sombre but 'safe' commentary.
At Prague Airport we see a plane coming to a halt on the tarmac and people disembarking. Street scenes in Prague show people milling about, trams going by, people sitting at a pavement cafe, a man sells newspapers, another man looks in a food shop window, people eat ice-cream and sausages in the street. C/Us of statues of King Wenceslas and a saint holding a crucifix.
People walk along Charles Bridge; sentries in dark glasses are seen at the castle gates. Various shots of the cathedral; people going inside. Several shots of the part of the city beside the river, a man and boy throw stones in the water. Several shots of Prague castle and cathedral; the 14th century Karlstein Castle; Konopiste Castle (former home of Archduke Franz Ferdinand), statues in the grounds and peacocks, some with tails spread.
North of the city we see the 'Bohemian Paradise' - forests and rocky countryside; three women walk about and look at a large lake. More shots of the city. At an open-air cafe we see Olinka Berova ("a bright young film star" according to commentator) sipping wine; this beautiful blonde beckons us to go with her and wanders around some lovely gardens in the city, rows across a lake before the Valdstein (?sp) Palace, walks around the city, over the Charles Bridge and beside the river. We see an old, ornate clock with moving figures on the side of a building; Olinka walks through the cloisters of a former monastery, now a museum, and across the courtyard, then wanders around looking at Prague Castle and the cathedral.
She goes inside the cathedral and we see several stained-glass windows, then comes out through the castle gates and walks off down a long flight of steps leading back to the main city, turns and waves at us and skips off.
Cuts exist - see separate record.

This is actually quite fascinating. Very good quality film too, considering how old it is.

I moved to Prague 10 months ago, and seeing footage of places ive been completely unchanged in 60 years is insane. Even with the old trams some of this footage could have been taken yesterday.

I would’ve loved to see the city at this time, before the tourist crowds

@@Yoghurtmale8 the tourists are definitely why i dont go to Old Town Square or the Charles Bridge unless i have visitors, but the city is pretty big and there are a lot of beautiful historic places to go that dont have that level of tourist numbers. Would absolutely recommend visiting if only for a couple of days if you have the time.

Released Sept. 26th, 1968. Czech actress Olga Schoberová 4:35 "This is a pride shared by all young chicks". The footage was shot pre-invasion (Aug. 20-21), the narration was done post invasion. Kyiv the Sad City 2022? I really doubt it!

The sun does not shine much in Europe, so I feel that the weather there is gloomy, unlike when the sun rises and the sky becomes blue.

Miután a Nyugat 1945-ben az országot odadobta az oroszoknak, krokodilkönnyeket hullatnak a csehek sanyarú sorsa miatt, és közben idilli képeket mutatnak a szomorú Prágáról. Annyira gáz...
After the West threw the country to the Soviets in 1945, they cry crocodile tears due to the dire fate of the Czechs, while this film shows idyllic pictures of a „Sad City”. It is so much disgusting...

I have talked with a German and in Germany, they call him King of Germany and some of them go far and say that the first University in Prague is actually German, not Czech. (because in Germany they didn't have one at that time, so they want to say that the First University in central Europe is German, not Czech :P haha not always the best stop crying .i.)
We know that Charles IV was half Czech by his mom, which he seen last time at age of 7 when his Father kindap away Charles IV and lock his mom, he never seen his mom again. His Father was German, king John Luxembourg and in Bohemia land he was nicnkamed "The King Stranger" or "The Alien King" ("Král cizinec)
Charles IV was in love with Bohemian (Czech) lands and he was more Czech than German, even though he had to learn Czech language again in adulthood.
But there is some beef going on and Germans want to tell that everything is theirs, just like this King Charles IV who in fact liked Bohemia more than German

Long before Gorbachev, Imre Nagy of Hungary and Alexander Dubcek of the former Czechoslovakia were the first national leaders to introduce Perestroika in Eastern Europe. In both cases, the people were not trying to overthrow Communism. Most people still believed in that system. What they were seeking to do was overthrow Soviet-style Communism and not make their nations satellites of any superpower. But Soviet leaders were concerned that this would weaken their influence over the region which is why they suppressed both attempts at reform. But in the end, the reformers won.
