This is utterly staggering. I wish Jacob would do an entire album of nothing but Voces8. No percussion, no complex lyrics. Pure tones and stratospheric extra-dimensional explorations of the cosmos that bring you to tears, destroying you and building you back up in the process.
I have arranged something of the same style ethereal feeling and harmony, but not to compare with VOCES8: th-cam.com/video/G9yr7SPVGP4/w-d-xo.html if you are interested.
The chord at 5:12 fills me with visceral terror every time, and the beauty with which the final resolution is reached is unlike anything I've ever heard. Absolutely incredible. Can't believe I waited six months to sit down with this album.
The chord progression at 2:56, though one of the more simple progressions in the piece, is my favourite part of the whole song. It is so colourful and beautifully haunting. It feels primordial, like I’ve been transported to the beginning of time, before any life came to be on Earth. I can picture a sunrise glowing across a vast and empty landscape. There are mountains far beyond the horizon and all is peaceful. This piece has really touched me and I get goosebumps every time I listen to it. If the album only consisted of this on loop, I most definitely would not be disappointed.
I never thought to picture that kind of thing, but now that I am, this piece is taking on a whole new kind of beauty. Thank you for illuminating me, even if unintentionally.
So I'm doing a music history project comparing this to medieval composers so here's my notes of analysis! Hey good stuff just a quick note on the cadential 6/4 chord: a lot of people don’t assign it an RN “I” and the explanation is complex but basically boils down to the fact that the 6 and the 4 of the chord are actually embellishing the dominant, and they invariably resolve downward in the same way suspensions or accented passing tones do. Thus, many have adopted the symbol of V with a 6-5 and a 4-3 but where those numbers vertically align with each other. See Laitz’ The Complete Musician, Burstein/Straus’s Concise Introduction to Tonal Harmony, and if you want other reference materials, I’ll send them to you
Legomyegoorj Thanks! My school uses that exact explanation of (V^64) chords but I just said I^64 here because it’s a little more universal. But thank you though! :)
Oh yes it is , because something has to make up for the balance of evil and good.... and it effects me personally and i know that from an artist perspective that if it effects and changes one persons life, then the artist has done his job ; and i so needed to hear this.

It's like "We're home. Now what?" I feel like that's a very Jacob idea to have. Home isn't just a place of rest and comfort for him. It's where everything happens. His debut album was basically a tribute to that.

Once in a dream I heard a music that I had never listened to before. More than that, I knew that that music couldn't exist on Earth, our ears just wouldn't have been designed for it. I felt like it was Mozart in a higher state of reality. I heard the most beautiful harmonies, and there were layers and layers of it... Thanks for once having the courage to upload your first video! Your mother were right... you make a lot of people happy!s
Box of Stars Pt. 2 leads perfectly into this song (only a few cents of difference). Makes me wonder whether World O World was initially meant to be the last song. Either way, the vocal continuity is wonderful.
For months I listened to this perfection, and now I realize that I had the honor to meet them many years ago. Same exact feeling having it in front of you in a beautiful church, but if you have the possibility go for that!
Don't know if it matters for anyone, but I have once heard the music of heaven or whatever it was. It happened long ago, was so special, was such an unusual experience I have never experienced before or after. It made a deep impression on me. As much as I love the 'covers' get on and do your thing. Total Respect
Honestly, there's no denying how talented Jacob Collier is. His grasp of music is quite beyond most. But I wish more of his music was like this song. It's slow and gradual. It allows the beauty to breathe. So much of what he makes tends to feel like a million tiny blips of complex ideas happening in rapid succession at light speed. And so much of it seems very intellectualized. Which is one of the main reasons I've intentionally chosen to limit the amount of theory I absorb. To mitigate the ratio of intellect to heart/feel in the music I make. I really want to love his music because his fascination with the inner workings of music and sound lead to some really interesting places. But the results often feel thought out to the utter extreme as opposed to felt. Whereas this.. this feels like nature. I wonder if he'll balance his intellect and heart enough to allow nature to breathe in the music he makes when he's.. maybe much older.. perhaps? I'm grateful for at least this track. It's just gorgeous.

So I'm doing a music history project comparing this to medieval composers so here's my notes of analysis! I'm not sure how much of this is actually correct but this is what I heard and will probably help to give insight to what the harmonies might be!
Microtonal
Sopranos, altos, higher voices
Begins with a P5 in D Major but the entire piece is flat by approx. 30 cents
Then repeats but adds on Major 2nds from the top
Then repeats but adds Major 2nds from the bottom
V-I Cadence in the Tonic Key
Builds chords by stacking intervals below and under the perfect 5th with major 7ths
Uses lots of leading tones to take you to distantly related keys
Goes bVII-ii-vi-I64-V-I
Uses all sorts of suspensions
Cadential 64 ^
Starts with the same perfect 5th but then adds a tritone underneath
Utilizes the overtone of the A to give the dominant effect despite the clashing harmonies and frequencies
Then plays a Bb 9 over the D P5
Next over the D P5 they sing a B-E-F#-A creating a false sense of tonicism and a fake cadence perhaps
This next section takes the opening motif of the adding 7ths and combines it with the chords from the 2nd section
Right after he surprises you with a bVII+ into the fake cadence again with an added major 7th
This chord is the first time the piano enters in along with some ambient reverse clicking sound effects
The piano improvises around the b mixolydian scale
This “fake chord” actually double serves as a pivot chord to E major using the b and f# to create a V chord more than a vi in D
About halfway through the piece we are now temporarily in E Major and we start by hearing a tonic I from the lower voices, bass, tenors
This E major chord resolves to a vi42
This repeats except some voices melismatically gliss down to the notes of the vi plus a major 3rd making this a dominant pivot chord to Ab Major
This next sections is now in Ab Major
This is the first time we hear lyrics “Home Is” with a I-V/Ab
“Home Is” is always sung on an Eb no matter what chord it is
They then add under an F P5 therefore phasing your sense of tonicism despite the I-V
Then repeats but with subtle synth glissandos and an added minor 9th on the V7 to resolve to the I with a nice PAC
This next sections starts with what sounds like a spaced out B Pentachord maj7 resolving to a Abmin7 then inverts up
Then repeats but with a low G as well as a retardation of the 3rd resolving to a Bmaj#13 and brings back the piano and reversed ticks
The piano dances around the 3rd of the chord playing F-C-D#-C
Next we hear a V7-I cadence in E minor, which then begins to underneath descend down by a D Major scale, the original key of the entire piece
On the A of the descending scale, the voices change to a Amaj9 and then has an anticipation to finish the scale with a Dmaj7
The final section of the piece restores itself to Equal Temperament with an Amaj7add9 hit from the orchestra hearing horns and percussion along with strings holding a pedal high A
The melody begins to descend down the A Major scale (the dominant key) and at the 5th scale degree begins to come back up as the chord turns into an Adom7add9 which finally resolves to the last big D Major chord for a nice V-I PAC
On the last chord the timpani holds out a rolled A which leads into the next piece past the cutoff of the final chord
starts on a=432Hz and ends in 440; typical Collier :D
