    Hi Russell, thanks for your comment - both the Rolex and this particular (RG) RO are gone; I've got my steel Royal Oak and added two Patek Calatravas to my small collection since then. AP's openworked RG RO has piqued my interest (15305OR) and I will most likely consider it in the future as a custom order, with the personalised rotor.
    Agreed on the camera front! I went from an EOS20 setup, various 'L' lenses to a compact; an EOS700/70D would be a fine replacement.

    @scotfreak Hi Scott, thanks for the kind comments ~ Yes, I've got the DJ, steel RO and this RG RO as well. Am really liking the regular switch between RG and SS, not to mention going between the black and white (well, off-grey) dials...

    Indeed. Stunning watch. The movement is so refined, but when you observe the case it gives this feeling that it is indestructible.

    My boyfriend is in the stock business. He has a Patek Phillipe Annual Calenders and a Nautilus. But I went crazy when he got his first AP Royal Oak 15450 in pink gold and brown leather. It just looks astounding! when the lights fall on it, it looks like the classiest thing in the world. AP is class setting master. perhaps most loved by women.

    Hi Chumpey, thanks! In the last six-months I've been flipping through quite a few of my pieces that the 'collection' now simply consists of three pieces: my steel AP RO (the other video review), the Patek 5146, and my Omega Speedy Pro Sapphire Sandwich.
    I've decided to add a few more Patek pieces before looking to get a 15400OR current model RG RO in 41 mm. I'm also keen on returning to collecting three particular steel Rolex sports pieces as these are great at retaining their value.

    Hi Ken, I completely agree - I've seen several Nautili examples at the Genève Salon, in particular the 5712 which is most likely the piece I would go for. It's stunning in steel, plus has a gorgeous cal. 240 movement. Do try get yourself a copy of the current PP magazine, it has a lengthy article on all the steps taken to polish a new Nautilus. Fantastic read!

  • @bsodmike
    @bsodmike  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I ended up parting with both the Rolex DateJust and this Rose Gold RO sometime back. At the moment my collection consists of the steel Royal Oak (see my other AP review), two Patek Philippe Calatravas, and an Omega Speedmaster Pro Sapphire Sandwich.
    I agree, if you're going for a RO I suggest steel as well. The gold version is very soft, and I think it 'appears' even softer due to the brushed finish of the RO; so any scuffs/scratches are picked up more easily than if it was mirror polished.

    The 15300OR is currently discontinued and used to retail for around $25k. The replacement model is 15400OR and goes for much more than that, circa US$30k.

  • @bsodmike
    @bsodmike  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks Mandy. It was a really nice watch, during the time I had it, but it paled (in part) when compared to the finishing of Patek Philippe. Hence, my decision to part with it, although I've kept my 15300ST in steel (see the other review I've posted). There'll always be a place in my collection for my 15300ST.

    Listed at retail, purchased from an official AP boutique. Got the brown croco strap and a couple AP travel pouch/boxes thrown in as gifts as well.

  • @bsodmike
    @bsodmike  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great question BigBoss - I was surprised to find out that AP does have a couple quartz calibers reserved for some ladies pieces.

  • @bsodmike
    @bsodmike  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's easy! I'd already decided to keep the 'white' dial for the 15300OR. The RG hour markers/hands just looks so much better on the white dial... At the time, the boutique had two 15300 steel pieces as last stock items (black/white dials), so I was lucky to pick the black one and a couple months later their last RG RO with the white dial.

  • @bsodmike
    @bsodmike  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I do not regret my decision and have just purchased my second Patek.
    Right now, I'm contemplating selling off the steel Royal Oak as well. The ROs are in plentiful supply and can be had quite easily; it's not the same with certain Patek pieces, especially the one I just purchased which is now discontinued.

  • @bsodmike

  • @bsodmike
    @bsodmike  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Indeed. I'm always tempted on getting another GMTIIC, this time in steel. However, the Rolex prices keep pushing past $10k, at which point I just feel it's better spent on AP/PP.

  • @bsodmike
    @bsodmike  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Having bought the Patek (and since I have two RO's of the same model) I'm thinking of selling this one (the RG RO). Hmm...! What do you think? Possibly put the cash towards another Patek, perhaps a 5960R - Chrono with annual calendar.

  • @bsodmike
    @bsodmike  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Scott, Well it certainly seems like you've answered your own question. While I can appreciate your friends comment, ultimately this is your watch and you'll have to decide what you want to see on your wrist of course! Yes, the movement being a significant factor I too would (and do) favour the Cal 3120. I've just added a 3rd AP to my small mix and it too has a Cal 3120 movement.
    I'd say go for the 15400OR as long as that's the one that sings on your wrist =)

  • @bsodmike
    @bsodmike  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @somendnguy I did it as a single-take this time around, in comparison to the last clip which was fully post-edited, i.e. the voice-over was done post-recording of the video. Going single-take plus taking about the piece off the cuff lead to more stammering/stuttering than I'd have liked plus the focussing issues. Oh well =)

    What do you think of the all diamond Royal Oak? I love it, also this one is wonderful!

  • @bsodmike
    @bsodmike  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks nlaout. I'd admit that the RG RO has a bit more wrist presence; comparatively my Patek is less so and that's an aspect I really love about it as well. They are both very different watches although I'd have to say the 5146J is my favourite as it really resonates with my passion for horlogerie.

    Well it certainly doesn't hurt to know that your watches appreciate over time and/or remain quite sought after in the second-hand market. The only piece I own now with very little resale value is my Omega speedmaster, but then again my current collection are all keepers including the APs.
    Quite frankly I was the same but my new Diver has me appreciating the ROO's quite simply for what they are.

  • @WuManGroup

    how do you feel about Audemar's new head of design? Do you feel his background/education is appropriate/substantial enough for such a prestigeous icon of the horology world? Is he fit to carry on the torch from Genta (particularly in referencd to what he has done to the royal oak line with the addition of the off shore models...)?

    Correct, you'd be surprised how different RG looks across various brands and also how each of them take on a different personality depending on the lighting. Even the AP rose gold looks very different under halogens and when you step outside.

    Hi kolokolok5- the skeleton is very nice, in fact, I may be tempted to get one in the future once. Yes, I am also keen on Lange, but they are German and very different to Patek. It can be a good thing and I may consider one of their pieces in the future. For the moment though, I have my eye on quite a few more PPs!

    72’000 BpH/VpH - (10.0 Hz)
    36’000 BpH/VpH - (5.0 Hz)
    28’800 BpH/VpH - (4.0 Hz)
    21’600 BpHVpH - (3.0 Hz)
    19’800 BpH/VpH - (2.57 Hz)
    18’000 BpH/VpH - (2.5 Hz)

    I think I'm around 6.25-6.5 inch and have seen folks with 6 inch wrists wearings ROOs, so I think you'll be able to wear a RO no problem. Best visit a boutique and try one on. The new 15400s are larger though whereas the 15300s are 39 mm.

    Octavio has been with AP for some time and has already made several changes right throughout the Royal Oak line since last year. I'm actually more concerned about their choice of CEO; their choice of Bennahmias over Merk is rather disconcerting yet it feels to be well aligned with AP as it is today. (cont...)

    I have been looking at your videos, and first off amazing collection of watches!
    I have been looking at the Royal Oaks and noticed you had the steel and rose gold versions- what made you sell off the gold version over the steel 15300? Did the rose gold scratch and ding too easily?
    Thanks!

    • @bsodmike
      @bsodmike  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      When buying both APs (same model) I realised that over time I'd probably favour one over the other. The decision to part with it also factored in my long-term goal for the collection and adding a Nautilus was always in the cards.
      Ultimately I favoured the steel RO due to its versatility and that bracelet is oh so gorgeous; but not to the point of selling the RG RO. Had the pieces in my collection been different this may have played out differently.
      On the plus side, I may seriously consider a 15305OR which is the openworked RO in RG. Until then, the Nautilus I will be purchasing will be its replacement.

      Michael de Silva
      I beg your pardon Mr. Silva, but i think you made a mistake selling this piece. Look at the kind of response this video is still getting. Most importantly, it's one sexy, gorgeous watch (aside all the tech specs and everything)

    • @bsodmike
      @bsodmike  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello MCH, perhaps but all in all, I haven't felt that way. I'm picking up my Nautilus within a couple months time and after that I may return to adding another AP.
      One thing I'm sure of is that I'm far more thrilled to add the Nautilus (in Rose Gold) to my humble collection, making it the third Patek in the mix.
      I've still got my steel 15300 Royal Oak, and absolutely love it to bits, so it's not like I'm short of an AP at the moment either :)

    • @MrClitoralHood01
      @MrClitoralHood01 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, that was a quick response!
      I went through your entire collection, and I must say, it's very impressive. I just felt why a person who's financially this capable need to sell such an outstanding piece. (not expecting an answer to that). Just curious, what do you think about the 5712 in steel?

    • @bsodmike
      @bsodmike  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha.. the way I look at it is simple, replacing it is easy! I guess I'm not your usual 'WIS/enthusiast/collector' - I only keep pieces in the collection (be it watches/pens) as long as I use/wear them etc.
      5712/1A is very nice and has the 'dark' blue dial if I remember correctly. I've taken almost a year now deciding between steel vs. rose gold for my 5712. Having tried both on, the steel does feel a bit light (about the same as the steel RO) but doesn't have the heft of the RG Nautilus, which is to be expected.
      Ultimately, I'd suggest you get the one that sings to you the most :)

    Hey Micheal - I am thinking of buying either a AP ROO 2014 grey alligator strap, or a AP RO gold or a big bang in rose gold. I heard that these watches are pretty heavy, and are not made for everyday use. What do you suggest ? Are the hublots worth the price ? and are they considered top end ?

    • @bsodmike
      @bsodmike  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Odino Dolmarko Hi there, re. Hublot - I personally avoid the brand as it's certainly far from top-end; it's quite simply the 'poor mans' AP, and you won't find the same quality. Those mis-aligned screws on the Hublots would not sit well with me.
      The AP RO on a leather strap isn't too heavy, and wore it for almost a year daily to work. They'll be fine for everyday use as long as you take necessary precautions - the gold is quite soft and any major knocks against say elevator doors etc. will most likely leave a nasty scar. The difference is that the obvious scarring would be somewhat lesser on a steel piece.

  • @bsodmike
    @bsodmike  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    (cont...finale) Personally I have found the quality of AP pieces to be lacking and was the main reason I sold my Rose Gold Royal Oak - it had some minor imperfections on the dial and the general finishing was far from what I've seen from Patek. However, the Royal Oak Genta design is just incredible and is the reason I continue to own my steel AP RO (15300ST) - it's just one of those iconic designs.
    Patek will continue to have my business, hopefully for many years to come.

    Mmm, the Calatrava's have a really wonderful design, and this "version" is what's considered classic Calatrava. The alternative is a contemporary design as in the 5396 (contemporary version to my 5146, however, the power-reserve complication is traded for the 24H complication).
