Justin, you're an absolute legend. I'm on day three of learning this song, almost 2 years in to my guitar learning journey, and the way you break down songs in to digestable chunks and really slow down and explain what is going on is invaluable, especially for a song like this which can be incredibly daunting. I know maybe 3 finger style songs, so perhaps I'm jumping in at the deep end, but you're definitely guiding my through it with this video. Can't wait to get the pieces down and then put it together.
im just as addicted to this lesson like i was when i found youre eric clapton-layla unplugged lesson, its hard but then again the more awesome when you nail the entire song, my guitar teacher(in real life:P) says im progressing like hell for my second year of playing and in my opinion thats a compliment ment for you justin
Wow, when I start to play that pattern in my head was: It doesn t sound like the song. But, now that I play it faster, it sounds great! The best tutorial
I had to laugh when I saw an interview with Frusciante about this song. He was playing it after a day surfing, and Keidis said "what's that bro?", and Frusciante replied "oh, nothing!" Writes one of the coolest song intros in history, and simply replies "oh, nothing!" What a legend!!!
After 3 months lockdown time to practice, I am slowly getting there. 55 years old, picked up my dusty guitar to pass the time. Suppose I could have picked something easier to start but what's life without a challenge. What an incredible lesson. As good as this wonderful song. Thank you for the time you took with this, Justin.
@@VonRibbitt Thanks @Ribbit. Took a while, ended up breaking it down into the four different sections, taking each one slowly until I could play it through and then putting them together. I'm certainly not as fluid as Justin, or John F, but I'm happy with the progress I've made. Enjoying the challenge 🙂
Well, I been playing this song for about a year I think, the first part at least and now I am trying to finish learning the song. It's very hard but for two days of practice I think Im making progress I can now make the chords and the sequences to a slow pace. I hope I can get use to the pain the chords are causing me in a week or a llitle more.
Justin been following for a while as a lot of your true fans and just like to say cheers for sticking to being yourself and not changing your vids. all love man
My first loooooooong musical...... Stuck in 2nd part second chord ☹️☹️😔😔😖😖😖 can't bar with ring finger but .......login the pain 😁😁👌🤟🤘.... Justin is da best!!!!!
Great lesson Justin. Your Folk Fingerstyle Course really helped me a lot with learning this song! I took the course few months ago and have been practicing since. I can remember how hard it was having the right fingers on the right strings, the fact that I had to look at my picking hands and then look back at my fretting hands, the constant unintentional muting, the chord-scale relations, the Travis picking, etc etc........ but it all paid off. It's still challenging, but it's coming together nicely. I'll never stop practicing. Thanks for the lessons. I hope you keep them coming. You're the best teacher!
Frusciante is really a genius. Really like his playing style. He makes it sounds so simple but yet so good. So soothing, calm and out of this world. Thanks to you too, I am on your Beginner course stage 3 and just bought RUST-1 mobile version from your store. Can you please make an easy beginner version of 'Desecration Smile'? Can't wait to progress quickly and play RHCP songs.
thank you soo much! I've played this song for years and loved it, but I never knew how to play it exactly right. More Frusciante tunes please, although I am grateful you've done so many already ! :)
Well, wonders will never cease! I too have been playing this with a constant bass line. As you say, It's going to take some practice to unlearn that. Thanks for another great tutorial!
One of my favorite songs ever and Justin did great job as usual. I love it that unlike any other tutorial/cover, Justin managed to nail that brilliant bass line. Thanks! I think that Justin simplified it a bit though, the picking pattern rhythm on the recording sounds slightly different. The bass notes are played on the 1/8ths but the the notes on the thinnest strings are a bit syncopated and slightly delayed, giving it that unique feel. This is barely noticeable when played near full speed but if you listen to the slowed recording (like under 75% speed), you'll hear it. Also, besides the variation on the Em chord that Justin mentioned, there are a few tiny variations on the Baug chord in the verse (including one sweet slide that for the life of me, I can't figure out). None are big deal by any means but if someone wants to play it exactly as the original, it has to be practiced with the recording and at very slow speed. Great song and tutorial!
In case anyone else is wondering at 20:25 the pattern is the same as the one for G/D from the section before, not like the A7 pattern. Great lesson though. I love this song!
I've been looking to work on my picking technique and this release couldn't have come at a better time. I've been working on it steadily for the past few months now and my confidence has taken a tremendous leap. Thank you so much for posting this one, it's always been a favorite of mine.
Man those fast chord changes are hard to play! But I will never give up!! Thanks Justin : ) Edit: Nice electric guitar in the background. What kind of brand is that? Never seen a logo like this.
Impossible to have been playing it wrong for 20 years..came out in 1999...awesome lesson from an awesome teacher btw!! P.S. John Frusciante is amazing!!!
Justin you are awesome ! I am studying guitar via your website and really enjoying it all, thanks for it being free and very solid lessons ! Thanks again, Tijs
Great lesson, easy to follow many thanks Justin, had lunch in secret harbour WA a few years ago, with your dad, I'm friendly with the Lawson's, lovely people.
Thanks so much for this! Tried to figure this out a while ago and got about as far as poorly playing the main riff. Hope you've got some more Chili Peppers lined up. Maybe Venice Queen or some Stadium Arcadium songs?
John frustrating more like can't link the 4 different stages quick enough but I will get there! Great lesson Justin as always, extremely appreciative of your time and knowledge, thanks man🤟🏻
Immediately subscribed. You're an AMAZING teacher, I've been looking for a good guitar teacher for a while now and so happy I finally found someone who explains everything so well. It was very easy to learn this way! Thank you so much Justin!
Excellent video lesson Justin, Beautifully played John frusciante would be impressed, And i liked how you added the counting banner at the bottom of the video, not seen that before in your videos, i know you count out the rhythm stuff anyways but could you keep it in for future lessons ? Makes it easier for us who still getting to grips with counting in general music. But keep up the great videos as always :D
Hi Justin! Incredible lesson, thank you so much. I think I may have caught a slight miscommunication that confused me. When you play the F#dim7 at 20:25 you say that this is the same pattern (I would think you meant the same pattern as the A,C,D). You in fact play the same pattern that is used at 11:30. It certainly sounds correct, so I think that is correct, but let me know if I am wrong. Thanks again!
At 22:41 on the F# you are doing a different pattern than on the A and C before. It sounds like a variation of the pattern you use for the Em. But since you played the F# with the A pattern at 0:42 I assume it's a mistake? I like it though, gives it a little extra touch
after this bridge at the end of the song, when we back to the first riff and have to put a pinky on 5 fret, in original frusciante does a slide but i don't know where he goes (at 2:11 on video). Can u teach us? Peace
