  • This was the day that Norwich City clinched promotion back to Division 1.
It was the first game that I traveled away to by myself. I'd started work in London a few months before and decided to get a train down to the game. I arrived at Portsmouth station by 11am and found a bus to Fratton Park. I then went into a pub opposite the ground and ended up playing darts with locals as the pub filled up with home fans before the game. walking over the road to the ground, I heard my name called out and it was Ken Brown (long story) asking if i wanted a ticket. He was obviously outside waitng for someone who hadn't turned up and needed to get back to the team.
So I ended up watching the game from a seat right next to the directors box. It was a great game but marred by fighting in what looked like the remaining three sides of the ground. After the game, I left and headed back to the city to catch a train back to London without incident. I heard later from friends that they had had to travel back to Norfolk on coaches with smashed windows.

I was coming up to my 5th birthday and it was a couple of years before getting my first season ticket with Mum and Dad, but I still recall every name. This is the first time I have ever seen this game and it has put a proper smile on my face. Thank you for posting.😁

as a Norwich fan these players are still talked about and I remember these games and when players got on with playing no play acting no over celebrating .Very simple and good times

Good point- so often players are solely interested in 'their ' dance moves after scoring .
Though it still looks strange seeing Ted Mcdougal not on the score sheet ,when NC got 3 goals.
Martin Peters was a great buy that season .

74/75 was the period I started going to Carrow Road. Great times.

I am a Portsmouth supporter and was there that day. I believe Norwich have been promoted three times at Portsmouth, this game, 1-0 Simeon Jackson and one other occasion. Anyone remember when?

Superb win! I was a 17 year old Villa fanatic and saw that 2-0
home win v Sunderland, crowd 57,000,..about 12,000 were visiting
Mackems hoping to oust you from 3rd spot.
Brilliant fans,...not a peep out of them...red and white everywhere.

I remember that the Villa players wanted the Goalkeeper to take a penalty- I think all the outfield players had scored that season ( fortunately(?) he didn't take it)

Yes Villa ( & Man Utd) were already promoted & it was Norwich or Sunderland for the 3rd place ( previous only 2 went up) ....a few days later the season finished with Villa winning 4-1 at Carrow rd ....

Remember it as a 14 year old ,just before the long hot summer of 75.

Maybe the game should have been ticket only to keep
the crowds segregated if Norwich fans were stood on
    three sides of the ground?
Fenced off zones had not yet been widely deployed in
    those far off days tbh.
Scary scenes, did you wear your Canaries scarf David?

Yes. I was pretty naive in those days. I traveled alone from London and got to the ground early. I spent 2-3 hours playing darts with Portsmouth supporters in the pub opposite with my Norwich scarf hanging out of my pocket

@@dbranch9 Probably a decent sort in the pub but
as soon as you step outside, you could bump into the
louts. Even 5-6 years previously, the skinheads era, it was
policy to ''diplomatically'' hide your scarf as a visiting fan.

At the time a lot of grounds didn't have rigid home & away sections - & some stands could be sort of neutral areas - in the bigger games at Norwich notice how many Man Utd, Liverpool, ipswich fans stood in the River end - a 'home stand' ..
