      Winter fishing here is typically tautog, cod, and mackerel, with ice fishing for many freshwater species always a possibility, or carp, or white perch, herring, and trout.

    Nice video again Ken. I was right there yesterday and we had decent day of fishing. Not like you guys and galley guy Mavros with 28 lbs fish. I had few nice size fish and couple of small ones and mostly everyone went home with some fish... But nothing better then bite of nice size blackfish😀. 👍

    Our winter cod season the last couple years has been a bust. Either tons of dogfish, or it's been too windy to go out. This year, they haven't sailed since mid-December for those reasons. But it's supposed to be nice this weekend. If I've got nothing to do, I'll get out. I usually stick to the fall season when sea bass is still open.

    I typically diamond jig for cod, but when the bite slows down, I switch to clams and go after sea bass (provided sea bass are in season. They're closed from January to June). But I've gotten some nice cod diamond jigging.

    • @kenwesterfeldfishing2244
      @kenwesterfeldfishing2244  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like jigging better myself but a lot of times in January SE of Block Island it seems water gets too cold and they won't chase but they're still turned on to the bait. At the end of the day you have to take them any way that you can get them and do what you must to fill the box.

      @@kenwesterfeldfishing2244 I don't usually do winter cod. I had reservations for January of this year, but got cancelled due to weather. The same for February. But usually, I only go out for cod in July and August, then switch to tautog in October before going back to cod in November and December. A couple times now, I had to go for tautog because there weren't enough people for the cod boat.

    Hey dumb question but do you think you hook up better with braid or mono when I comes to cod because I'm just getting into the offshore stuff 100+ ft of water and I don't have a conventional set up on me since I mainly do fluke,shallow sea bass and tog so im thinking about just renting a rod on the boat

    • @kenwesterfeldfishing2244

      INTERESTING STORY: In 2016 my family & I visited my sister-in-law and her family who lives in Copenhagen Denmark. My nephew & I went on a cod trip. they call them "Torsk" there. So we found a head boat and the Captain spoke English fairly well. He explained to me that only a year earlier ALL trawling for cod was STOPPED there.
      Though the fish were small and only just beginning to rebound, they were numerous. We had fast action as long as we were over the school. Along with mackerel too. I really hope that their Turbot rebounds well too. I'm looking forward to another visit, and fishing trip there eventually. It was a lot of fun!

      I tie all of my own rigs. I have videos on how to tie most. Although I want to re-shoot the High low rig. I'll try to put it out ASAP although I did just have wrist surgery.

    Too many city dwellers predominantly Chinese go on the Viking fishing charters. Plus, it’s not as great as most people make it seem for what you actually pay to fish!

    • @kenwesterfeldfishing2244
      @kenwesterfeldfishing2244  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cod is a far cry from what it was in it's pique times. There are few days in the year when generous numbers can be caught. Even more rare to find great quality in size. I don't know anything about your prejudice toward Chinese people. That's got nothing to do with me. But I found a very large mix of ethnic backgrounds aboard although I'm not sure why that should matter. It's also not a charter. It's an open head boat trip. Anyone can go.
