  • @kingseekerbackup3085

    Just to be safe, it is recommended that you first cover the entire gpu die with thermal paste to prevent damaging it. Unlike cpu that has an integrated heatspreader, the gpu doesn't and raw gpu die might have some parts that is not measured by a thermal sensor and might overheat. It's better to be safe than sorry

    The warranty on my R9 280x just expired exactly 1 month ago. I've been thinking about upgrading it, but it's just powering my old pc that my 3 year old watches videos on. Now that i've seen this I'm confident that I can clean it up and squeeze some more life out of it. Loved that card. It's what got me into PC Gaming.

      @kys It went great, thanks! I had bought a cheap pre-build because I didn't know much about computers, the time i made this comment I has was having over-heating issues and it was the first time i ever took a part out the PC so I was nervous. It had spent the last couple years on carpet and I have cats too, I did spray air in there every now and then but that's the most I was confident doing at the time. The GPU was super clogged full of clumps of dust, I'm surprised it was still going the amount in there. I've had my PC 4-5 years now and looking after it a lot better, I have a bigger desk so it doesn't need to be on the floor, I've even done some storage and cooling upgrades. :) I will probably be building my own pc next time instead of buying a pre-build.

    I use q-tips with isopropyl on my fan blades & heatsink, and microfibre + isopropyl on the main board. I also use a compressor to blow the dust off rather than buying lots of compressed air canisters. I'm not sure I'd recommend any old baby wipe myself.
    Also, you needn't bother with compressed air when the heatsink is removed, you can even use a vacuum, make sure you discharge it before bringing it back near your components but it will not cause damage to the fan and heat sink and do a better job than compressed air & safer.
    Also you should recommend people wear a mask when using compressed air for dust/ do it outside as the dust isn't great to breathe.
    I'd also recommend you give a comprehensive list of what people need before they start- including quality heat paste and isopropyl >95%.

    • @EverythingbySam
      @EverythingbySam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can’t always recommend thermal paste as each brand is available in every country as for every other item I listed then in the video.
      I vacuum is the worst thing to use as it can quite easily fry your components and an air compressor is only good using a low PSI otherwise you can damage components especially PCBs so a can or 2 of compressed air is the best solution to cover the most people.
      I should have to suggest a mask as I myself don’t even wear one. Just don’t stand down wind and preferably do it outside, it’s not that hard.
      Isopropyl over 90% like I recommend it’s fine, anything above that can be hard to find in different countries.
      Baby wipes work as long as you give it a once over at the end with a dry microfibre to dry it off.

    I have a gtx 580 reference model card, I had the whole card cleaned out, pcb, and the thermal paste reapplied. The card was originally rated to not go over 86C on full load, but as soon as I play heavy intensive games such as the Witcher 3 the card gradually picks up the temperature, at first the card does a good job staying at temps between 80-86C but then the card picks up in temps to 97C it seems as if the card just continues to generate more heat. I know the reference cards are known to be a bit hotter but it seems nvidia did a poor job regulating the amount of heat the card releases. Can you give any thoughts. I'll try to reapply the thermal paste to see if it makes any difference.

      I actually have all those programs, that's where I monitor and try to regulate the temps of the graphics card. I've had success cleaning out and decreasing temps on multiple cards. Somehow I feel like I made a mistake applying the thermal paste, this card has a very large die in comparison to other cards so if done wrong it can cause bubbles or other unwanted things that causes the temps to automatically spike up. I'm also going to check to see how the card spikes in temps in other games and whether it's just a few handful games. Bc the witcher 3 is an extremely demanding game puts older hardware to max load.

      I sprayed my card about once a year, and I think it helped a little, but doing it like he described really made the difference I was looking for. For you, wait until it starts getting loud and hot in a couple years. Then, if you just do it like he described in this video, you'll find it's not too terrifying. I was a little nervous, being my first time, but sure enough, the card was a lot more forgiving than I thought it'd be. I even had to improvise because my card had some side screws and I had to unscrew the plate that holds down the GPU, but it all came apart very nicely (make sure you are careful with the screws, they are tiny!). And, man, was that old thermal paste baked on. I used Q-tips and isopropyl 99% alcohol to clean it, and it dried just fine. I found using very soft brush strokes to clean it did a good job of collecting the old past without wetting anything down besides the GPU surface. I eventually even used a "gaming cloth" cleaner towelette and that didn't do any harm.

    Can you just remove the graphics card from the motherboard and it’ll be fine when you plug it back in or do I have to do something before and/or after I plug it in?

      As long as your computer is turned off you can remove ,swap out or put back in any component and it will fine.
