This game is the original "just one more turn" until you are up all night :) I still play it regularly. Quick Tips: For higher population you need to place your cities close together, even if they overlap production squares. This keeps the city small enough that colosseum/temple will prevent revolt, and you can increase scientific output through taxes. Max science until you are well ahead in tech, you can't lose. Settlers are critical, I generally have each city produce one settler almost immediately after founding, and use it to road/irrigate/mine every adjacent square, when everything is done, use the settler to found a new city or add pop to an existing one.
Civ1 was my first rage quit. My battleship (A18) attacked militia (D1) fortified in the mountains. And lost. HOW THE FUCK CAN A BATTLESHIP LOSE TO A BUNCH OF PEASANTS WITH FORKS???? I'm still outraged lol
Ah the good old days. Tanks losing to phalanxes, and nuclear war Ghandi!
