    Logged hours basically translates to muscle memory. And muscle memory can either make you more proficient (because it's engrained) or make you more complacent (because you've been doing it forever).
    Logged hours can help guarantee someone's ability, but you can log hours in other ways than through a university. Like a resume, references, portfolios, etc.

A lawyer doesn't need to know things like that a very smart person can learn to be a lawyer. A pilot goes through lots of simulations. Nurses Doctors etc. need school. Carpentry, home decor etc. No need for school. Its all based on yhe industry.

    Bob usually wins arguments but Bob was so wrong about standards and practices tests part of this. when someone practices something for more hours than someone else, most likely they will be better than someone who did it well at once. she used specific examples but that doesn't stand for the vast majority. brains know something better the most they do it, period. that's science. there are exceptions, but you cannot argue with that.
    Ryan studied law for 4 years. He passed his test.
    Liam studied the standards and practices test for a few months and he passed his test.
    these are absolutely NOT comparable. If neither of them touched law again for the next 3 years, and then they both retook the test again there is a MUCH more likely chance that someone like Ryan would pass it.
    Bob is siding with the education system which is so wrong lol standardized tests are what's ruining the educational system and everyone who's in it knows that. Precisely because a Liam can be regarded by people as an equal to Ryan is why it's wrong. ingrained EXPERIENCE will always trump scoring better on ONE specific standardized test.

    • @lilnastyy1604
      @lilnastyy1604 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Law is actually public information, so if someone sat at home and learned them word for word and trained their persuasive skills, they could produce the same work as those that went to school i.e beauty gurus are professional and making money, but not all of them went to beauty school. I was even given my GCSE Maths exam 2 years early and got an A grade, so I spent my GCSE years learning Further Maths and Statistics because my school knew 2 more years of education I’d already grasped was a waste of time. Bob isn’t saying 100% of the time but he’s right in saying why should it take countless hours in a classroom, when someone with a natural talent that could produce the same level of education could take the same end of year test and pass, why is that not enough? This spreads across sciences, arts, most courses you’d find really.

    • @lilnastyy1604
      @lilnastyy1604 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bob also never said you don’t need the experience, he’s just saying you shouldn’t need a degree or school counting your hours to prove you have the same. I think you’re actually fighting the same argument as him.

    • @lilnastyy1604
      @lilnastyy1604 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Law is also ever changing, so a degree from 20 years ago, even with experience could mean nothing with a change of government. In which people just starting to learn would be more equipped with up to date knowledge and less clouded by previous law even with no court experience.

    • @kiliaduicaps
      @kiliaduicaps 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lilnastyy1604 You took beauty gurus an example, so let me reply with another example:
      Lacey goes to make up school for 3 years. They teach her how to work with every skin type, colour, texture, ecc. She gets her degree and stars working.
      Stacy has natural talent. She gets notice in the beauty industry because of her TH-cam following. She also stars working.
      They both get the offer to do some famous people makeup. Who would you trust? Lacey or Stacey? I'd personally feel a lot more comfortable with Lacey. Dunno about you.

      @lilnastyy1604 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kiliaduicaps I also listed others too so you could read those.
      But to go off of your example, let’s take beauty, which can also be influenced with creativity. Just because someone learns the basics doesn’t mean they have the creativity to pull off more than someone with natural talent, for example lets take DRAG QUEENS.

    Did y'all really forget that its not just hours involved here, there are strong reasons why a degree denotes greater knowledge than training oneself to pass a standardised test.
    Yes, you can of course construct knowledge and talent yourself (especially if the thing in question is less technically complex) but the benefit of going through the education system is that there is an enormous number of external resources (books, classes, assignments, tests, TEACHERS who have a wealth of knowledge far beyond your own also informed by a diverse array of their own teachers). These things are essential to reaching a holistic understanding that one person on their own terms just simply does not have the capacity to create for themselves.

He will be a 2nd officer or navigator to raise his hours first..So education is relevant based on industry..Doctors------->should absolutely go to school, hair stylists should be able to prove their knowledge on an exam THEN do their hours under a mentor...Plumbers and electricians work that way!!!

    These two sometimes are unbelievable in their arguments. I see Bob's point of view on things. But Monét's points here especially with flying are SPOT ON. Just because someone passed a test doesn't make them more "EXPERIENCED". I would MUCH rather have someone with 3yrs flying experience over someone who just passed a test a week prior. And i think that goes for just about everything when it comes too an occupation.

  • @narutofanguy321
    @narutofanguy321 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I think there’s a discussion happening here that’s focusing on talent/natural ability vs. practice to hone a craft, but there’s also a hint of theoretical knowledge that Bob was advocating for. I think if a person has a natural ability and talent for something, then I don’t think they should be held back from being able to do the career but I think there’s something gained from supervised hours to ensure there’s a strong knowledge base. To go with their cosmetology example, you can understand how to cut hair well or color it well, but maybe the person is not able to do this across a wide scale population. Or, maybe they have a strong grasp on how to color hair but maybe lack a strong sense of color theory or how different hair colors can impact skin tone or how it can frame a face. There’s a lot that supervised work hours or intern hours for licensing or certification that is really beneficial and should not be bypassed. You benefit from both, but that practical experience is really helpful.

    Bob, am siding with Monet with the certification topic. Yes,it is true that someone can take a test and pass, and it also can be said that if a person can past a particular test he or she knows what they are doing. However, it is also important that a person pursuing a particular art form be monitored by an instructor, and log a specific amount of hours under the supervision of an expert in said field.
    A person can come off the street and take a standardized test and pass, it shows that they know a lot about the topic. On the other hand a person pursuing a degree or certificate could probably pass that same test too --even though they are at the halfway mark in their studies.
    Logged supervised hours is important, it sets a standard for a particular industry, it minimizes fraud, it limits fuck-ups.

    Think about how many actors have become great musicians vs how many musicians have become great actors.
    Music, especially "classical" is about studying a craft that has essentially been well-defined and "perfected" over the years. There are clear, tangible standards and rules on how to sound, play, coordinate, conduct etc (if you play an 'A' instead of a 'B', it's simply wrong...if you're playing 50 cents flatter than you're stand partner, you'll hear it). There are defined scales, chords, and progressions to learn, and right and wrong ways of playing them.
    Acting is more ambiguous - every person brings something different and there's no "right" or "wrong" way to act...it's more about being convincing, and even that's super debatable.

    They both make good points. Formal education does let employers or others know that you've successfully gone through a training program for whatever you're doing. However, you can be independently taught and have the same or more knowledge and experience than someone with a degree, but it can be much harder or impossible to prove that you possess those skills, knowledge, and experience to an employer without a degree or some other portfolio/test/certification/etc.

    Bob's right. I have four arts degrees, double major in English and Film, double minor in CMCL and AADS and I work freelance making less than 30 g's a year. So yeah, shit ain't worth the paper it is printed on!!

    This one hits right at home. I’ve been two years after not finishing high school without studying arts and people assume I’m wasting time not learning about art and they throw down my intelligence because I didn’t finish school. BUT they dont know I’ve been playing piano every single day, singing every single day, writing music, getting better at drawing, just because it wasn’t inside an institution it seems to be not serious.

    31:50 I do agree with Bob, because for example. When you are suppose to be practicing to drive for those 6 months before you take the driving test and you never practiced not once up until the last day before your exam. And you still passes you have then successfully completed the corse and there are no questions asked the guy or whoever is doing the exam approved of it but you weren’t forced to practice at all those 6 months.

  • @joeytheviolist

    As someone who wants to teach, I have two things I’d like to add.
    1. With music, it’s all about names. Who did you learn from, what/whose techniques do they teach, and how long where you under them. It stemmed from the old ideas of when students were sent off to live with their teachers and take lessons from them and idea has still stuck around. It’s the idea of lineage and who did what and changed what to discover the best way to teach. The easiest way to think of it is through the lens of philosophy and rhetoric. In Grecian times, Socrates taught Isocrates and Plato. Plato then taught Aristotle. It’s though this lineage that we see the ideas of Socrates transform and why they’re considered the big three of Ancient Greece.
    2. I worked with an elementary teacher who put higher education into broader terms which I think is a great way to look at it. You DO NOT need to go to college for a degree to get a job, you need an education. Education can be found in the forms of a trade/skill/talent or a degree. The teacher would always say, “I went to school for 4 years to get my degree to teach. My plumber has no degree and makes almost if not more than double my income.” This is what we should be teaching students, as long as you get some form of education, you are an educated and intellectual person despite what the field your intellect may lie in. I would never be able to look at a surgeon and call them uneducated because I play music, so why do that to someone who has taken on a trade?

    The hours are there for getting into a routine and more chances to do something wrong under supervision, so you know more and can react better to unknown situations.
    I think a lot of the "tests" in classic education are too dependent on too many factors (your educator, how good are you at memorising stuff, do you get nervous/anxious at tests), so I think hours/practical work is very important as well to balance the tests (and vice versa).
    I think it is horrible how much you have to pay for education in the US (and often anywhere else for arts programmes)

    I like mostly agree with Monet (which I usually side with Bob) but it really just seems like Bob is arguing that there should be more access to official certification other than a college education, which I agree with. It just seemed like they needed to argue about something they agreed on. I still watched the whole thing, laughed, and will continue to watch so 🤷🏽‍♂️
